ACTIVITY 1

BUILDING TECHNOLOGY 5

PRE-CAST AND CAST-IN-PLACE SYTEM

MACARAIG,PAMELA A.
AR- 404
PRE-CAST SYSTEM
Project: Ospedale Giovanni XXIII Chapel
Location: Bergamo, Italy
Precaster: Styl-Comp
Architect/Designer: Traversi + Traversi,
Aymeric Zublena, Stefano Arienti

The Ospedale Giovanni XXIII Chapel

features graphic panels designed to invoke
the Garden of Eden. (Photo © Styl-Comp-
Camillo Bonfanti)
The panels required a special mix design,
detailed curing and washing processes, and
extreme care during handling and shipping to
ensure the pattern and joints remained perfectly
intact. This included dedicated stripping and
handling frames and special protection after
installation until the roof was completed. In
total, 64 panels were poured, including 32
Graphic Concrete panels. The company also
manufactured the slim velarium outside façade
panels.

CAST-IN-PLACE
SYSTEM
Pirelli Tower
Client: Pirelli Group.
Location: Piazza Duca d’Aosta, 5, 7A – Milano.
Architect: Gio Ponti.
Project/Consultancy: Pier Luigi Nervi, Alberto
Rosselli, Arturo Danusso, Egidio Dell’Orto,
studio Giuseppe Valtolina, Antonio Fornaroli.
Program: Offices
Site Area: 24,000 sq.m
Building Dimensions: Length 70.4 m, Width
18.5 m, Height 127 m.
Construction details: The chief structural
characteristic is the concentration of the floor
weight on few load-bearing structures, so that
the resistant surface necessary to support vertical
loads, gathered in a few pillars, gives the pillars
themselves the necessary rigidity to withstand
the massive horizontal forces.
Construction system: Polygonal floor plan,
similar in shape to a diamond (due to trapezoid-
shaped sections inscribed in a rectangular layout
with the shorter sides ending in a cusp), on a
grid of reinforced concrete pillars and a curtain
facade; brick-concrete floor; flat roof terrace.
The volume of the building rises up to 127 feet
from the ground and at the time of its
construction was one of the tallest skyscrapers in
Europe.
Project: 1956
Start of works: 1956
End of works: 1960

They are structurally unified by the
connecting balconies, and so horizontal
forces are directly taken by structural walls
running in two directions. In this system,
steel posts take vertical loads from the flat
slabs, which are independent from the
structural walls.
