Advanced Statistics and Probability Course Syllabus

Instructor: Assistant Professor Yerkin G. Abdildin, [email protected]

Teaching Assistant (TA): Altyn Baigaliyeva ([email protected])
Lectures: on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 13:30 – 14:45, August 17 – November 26, 2021 (online).
Tutorials: on Wednesdays, 13:30 – 14:15, August 24 – November 26, 2021 (online).

Course description
The concepts of probability and statistics contribute extensively to the solutions of many types of
engineering problems. According to an analysis conducted by LinkedIn, Statistical Analysis and
Data Mining is one of the most sought-after skills in job market. Graduates must have a
fundamental knowledge of probability and statistics to be competitive in the world market.
Advanced Statistics and Probability will best serve graduate students in all engineering
disciplines. The main part of this course aims at bringing the students, who arrive with quite
varying backgrounds in statistics and probability, up to the same advanced level. The other part
discusses advanced topics (e.g. Decision trees, Six Sigma, Statistical Quality Control).

Course Aims:
1. Understand how probability distributions model experiments with uncertain outcomes
2. Understand how to analyze these experiments by applying statistical methods to observed
outcomes
3. Understand how to deal with problems under uncertainty and multiple objectives.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):

At the end of the module the learner will be expected to be able to:
1. Utilize probability distributions to model engineering problems under uncertainty.
2. Apply statistical methods to analyze engineering problems.
3. Provide engineering solutions to real-life problems.
4. Develop statistical conclusions.

Final Grade
Your Final Grade will be based on:
Homework assignments 40%
MidTerm(s) (closed book) 30%
Final exam (closed book) 30%
After calculating your Final Grade (FG), we will round it to 1 digit after the decimal point.
For example, if your FG = 94.95, then it will be rounded to 95.0.
However, FG = 94.94, will be rounded to 94.9.
We do not arbitrarily add 0.1% or so to increase your grade.
There will be no ‘curving’ of grades.
Cheating is strictly prohibited.

Homework (HW)
After the due date, HW will not be accepted and the student will receive a grade of zero.
In case of sickness, students should submit a note from their doctors to School Office and inform
TA. In case of a conference travel, students can submit assignments to TA beforehand or by e-
mail. In any case, TA should confirm the acceptance of an excuse by checking appropriate
documentation from School Office.

Exams: MidTerms and Final Exam

Final exam is cumulative (i.e. may include material covered from the first day of classes).
According to the University policy, a student, who is late for 30 or more minutes, will not be
allowed to take the exam without permission of School Administration.
MidTerms and Final Exam are closed books and closed notes, though you are permitted to bring
one hand-written A4 sheet of notes, double sided, so formulas and expressions need not be
memorized. Calculators are allowed. In case if quarantine continues, then the exams may be
online (e.g. multiple choice questions in Moodle).
