Speech Covid
Good afternoon
First of all, let’s thank Allah SWT who has been giving us some mercies and blessing so that we
can attend this meeting without any troubles at all.
Secondly, may sholawat and salam be with our Prophet Muhammad SWT who has guided us
from the darkness era to the brightness era.
Thank you for your time and chance for me, so I can be here in front of you to deliver my
speech. I hope today all of you have a good mood and condition too. So today I want to share
about my thoughts through my speech about challenges of education during current pandemic
situation.
We all already know that The COVID-19 pandemic took the world by surprise. Globally,
everything has stopped. Projects have been delayed, workplaces closed and schools shut down.
The world seems to have ground to a halt because of the coronavirus.
COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way of learning in education. Teaching, and learning
activities that are usually carried out with face-to-face meetings have turned into virtual meetings
in various online learning applications. This way is currently the best alternative as keeping
schools open poses a safety risk for the students.
Globally, many countries have adopted this approach. Schools in New York, the United States,
prepared for online learning by distributing gadgets to their students, ensuring they had access to
learning materials. As of early April, education authorities distributed around 500,000 laptops
and tablets to their students, allowing them to participate in online class.
When the first COVID-19 cases were announced in Indonesia in early March, the country was in
a panic. However, many schools were not ready to apply home learning programs yet. The online
classes implemented in Indonesia work differently from those in the US. This is because those
students lack the devices and internet access to be able to participate in online classes, and the
schools do not have the capacity to teach online. Unlike in New York where devices are
distributed to students by schools and private companies, in Indonesia, there is yet to be this kind
of effort.
As a student participating in the home-learning program, online school was confusing to adjust
to as we had not been prepared through simulations or practices beforehand. Students reported
the home-learning program to be even more stressful than regular classrooms. Some of the
common reasons for this went along the lines of: "Normal classes may have been difficult, but
having friends makes it so much more manageable and less stressful. Online classes take out the
benefits of having friends to socialize with and being stuck alone with nothing but only
assignments."
Many students participating in home-learning programs also say that the workload of online
classes is larger than that of regular classes. Even home-learning programs are good alternative
to continue school lessons during a pandemic but still it require some getting used to by students,
as it is a new thing and not many are experienced with them.
There are some schools where their students still do not have cellphones so they cannot
participate in online class, therefore the school must be able to find solutions to anticipate this.
The problem that occurs is not only in the learning media system but the fact that quotas require
quite high costs. The quota purchased for internet has increased and many parents are not ready
to increase their budget on the internet network. This is a very important problem for students,
Not only that, online classes cannot be separated from the internet network. Internet network
connection is one of the main disruptions during online classes, especially for students living in
areas that are difficult to access the internet.
Due to the bad internet access, the online learning process is also disrupted, so that the students
also experience difficulties in understanding lessons during the online classes. Just imagine, if
the students who study regularly at school (face-to-face) often don't understand the lesson, then
what will happen to students during online classes? The online classes make the students more
lazy to study than before, it is because they have more time to play gadgets. Like playing games,
going to Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and other social media compared to studying. As a result,
there is a feeling of laziness which is very difficult to resist, especially when the teacher often
gives many tasks which will actually make students even more bored and stressed while
studying.
So, in order to create online classes that are carried out properly and without various kinds of
problems as I have mentioned earlier, there should be cooperation between schools, students, and
even the government. For example, if there are students who cannot understand the lesson during
an online class , they must have the initiative to learn independently and also look for other
sources on the internet to relearn lessons that they haven't previously understood, as well as the
government and schools, they should be able to facilitate all students so all of them can take the
online classes without any problems, especially facilitating the students who still live in rural
areas.
That's all I can say, I hope this speech can be useful for all of us and I also hope that we can stay
healthy and continue to survive in this pandemic even though it feels tough, don't forget to
always obey the health protocols. As human being, I realize that I can’t avoid the mistakes, so i
apologize if there are any words or behave that unpleasing your heart. Thank you very much for
the occasion and your kind attention..
Wasalamualaikum Wr.Wb.
