Course Title: Purposive Communication
Course Code: GEC 005
Course Description: Purposive Communication is a three-unit course that develops students’
communicative competence and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through
multimodal tasks that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately
to a multicultural audience in a local or global context. It equips students with tools for critical
evaluation of a variety of texts and focuses on the power of language and the impact of images to
emphasize the importance of conveying messages responsibly. The knowledge, skills, and insights
that students gain from this course may be used in their other academic endeavours, their chosen
disciplines, and their future careers as they compose and produce relevant oral, written, audio-
visual and/or web-based outputs from various purposes.
Course Unit: 3 units
Course objectives/ Learning outcomes: The students who successfully complete this course will be able
to:
Discover how the English language spread throughout the world.
Explain how cultural and global issues affect communication.
Use Standard English and bias-free language in writing.
Deliver a speech and report using effective verbal and non-verbal communication.
Give a talk in front of a corporate or academic audience, in a business or an academic
conference.
Practice high-level writing as a process of thinking, planning, reading, and evaluating, as
well as creating and revising knowledge for the benefit of Philippine society.

used for interaction. Analyze how their roles as sender and receiver interchange while interacting.
Examine if there is any noise or barrier existing in their communication.
If yes, observe the effect of the noise on the communication process. Chose another situation
where noise/barrier is affecting communication. Analyze the causes leading to noise/barriers and
the steps that can be taken to remove them. Write your observations below.

upon your area of study for your interview.
Method:
1) Form a group of two (2)
2) Each adopt the role of either the ‘Interviewer’ or the ‘Job Candidate’
3) Interviewer: Ask your Job Candidate the following questions one at a time; Job Candidate: Answer each

4) Swap roles after 5 minutes and repeat the role play
