Sri Lanka Telecom Training Centre: Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Computing (RQF)

The document is an assignment brief for a networking course. It provides details of a project to design a network for a new campus building and outlines what should be included in the report. It specifies the people and resources that will use the network, as well as the building layout. It lists the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the assignment. The brief guidance section provides more details on what should be discussed in each section of the report, including proposing a suitable network type and standards, topology, factors influencing performance, networking devices and software, server selection and future planning.

Assignment Brief and Guidance
LO1 & LO2
Suppose you are employed as a Trainee Network Engineer by Tri-Net Networking Solutions Ltd where
a leading high tech enterprise networking solutions provider in Sri Lanka.
The company has been recently awarded a contract from a local higher education institute to build
network facility infrastructure of a campus building that has been recently built up in Pititpana,
Homagama.
The specification of the project is given below:
 People: 200 students, 15 academic staff, 12 marketing and administration staff, 05 higher
managers including the head of academics and the program manager, 03 computer network
administrators.
 Resources: Two student computer labs each with 30 computers(total60), 35 staff computers,
03 printers, and onsite mini data center to host domain, web, and mail servers.
 Building: 03 floors, all computers and printers are on the ground floor apart from that student
computer labs – one lab located on the first floor, and another located on the second floor. The
mini data center integrated with main network room are located at the ground floor.

As a preliminary task for the network design, the Head of Projects (IT & Networks) of the company has
asked you to investigate and explain networking principles, protocols and devices and submit a report.
The report is required to include following:
1. An introduction to provide an overview of your report as an executive summary.
2. Propose feasible network type and networking standards for above scenario by discussing
benefits and constraints of your preferences compare with other network types and standards.
 Network type – (using network type is LAN) Describe LAN ,WAN and MAN with pros and cons..
And at las describe the reason to you use LAN for this project.
 Networking Standards- [IEEE 802.3 (wired) is the standard used ] describe about the IEEE 802
standard, and describe the reason to use IEEE 802.3ab & describe the reason to use IEEE 802.3an
from the IEEE 802.3 family…
3. Discuss about suitable network topology for above network with details of required speed of
communication and bandwidth requirements.
 Network topology – (Extended Star topology) Describe about it and Describe the reason to
use star topology… & describe about the network and cable speeds..
4. Explain factors influence for effectiveness and performance of suggested network system.
5. Discuss operating principles of each networking hardware that used in the implementation
including servers at mini data center.
6. List and explain different networking software required in the implementation with their
interdependence to hardware platforms (Consider both operating systems and applications for
networking).
7. Explore a range of server types that suitable to host domain, mail, and web services locally and
justify the selection of a server, considering cost and performance optimization.
8. The client has already planned to build another three-story building in the campus within
another two years. Also, they are willing to expand this network to the proposed building

which specifications are more like this project. Accordingly, as the final section of your report
critically evaluate and discuss initial actions or plans should accounted in this project for
efficient utilization of the system with selected topology and standards. (Hint: You are required
to consider about future scalability, cost optimization and networked system effective
utilization for future development.)
