DIFFERENT TYPES OF MAP


(INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY: FACTSTORMING)
OBJECTIVES:

AT THE END OF THIS LESSON, THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:


1. CLASSIFY HOW THE MAPS DIFFER IN THEIR USAGE
2. CREATE A FACTSTORMING WEB ABOUT THE TOPIC
3. DECIDE HOW IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE USAGE OF THE MAP
REVIEW:
• 1. Physical Maps – “are designed to show the natural
landscape features of Earth. They are best known for showing
topography, either by color or as shaded relief. Physical maps
often have a green to brown to gray color scheme for showing
the elevation of land.
• Darker greens are used for near-sea-level
elevations, with the color grading into tans and
browns as elevations increase. The color gradient
often terminates in shades of gray for the highest
elevations. Physical maps usually show the most
important political boundaries, such as state and

• “The primary groupings of the islands consist of 3 areas: Luzon


in the north, is the largest covering about 141,395 km2, Visayas in
the center covering about 56, 606 km2, and Mindanao is in the
south covering about 102,000 km2. Some of the other prominent
islands are Samar, Negros, Palawan, Panay, Mindoro, Leyte,

2. Climate Map- “is a depiction of prevailing
weather patterns in a given area. It usually
consist of a conventional map overlaid with
colors representing climate zones. The map’s
legend helps you identify each

Based on the distribution of rainfall, four climates


types are recognized, which are described above.
Typhoons have a great influence on the climate and
weather conditions of the Philippines. A great
portion of the rainfall, humidity and cloudiness are
due to the influence of typhoons.

3. Political Map
• A political map shows the state and national boundaries of a place.
A political map does not have any topographic features.
• It also shows the location of cities, with respect to each other.

• "Political maps" are among the most widely used reference maps.
They are mounted on the walls of classrooms throughout the world.
They show the geographic boundaries between governmental units
such as countries, states, and counties. (geology.com)

4. Economic or Resource Map
• Economic or resource maps show the
different resources present in the area or
economic activity prevalent.
• They show the kind of crops that are grown
and the minerals found in places.
• Symbols and letters are used to depict the
activity or resource present in the area.

5. Road Map
• Road map is the most widely used map which shows
different roads, highways or railways present in the
area.
• It is a very detailed map and is generally used for
direction purposes.
• Road maps are usually made individually, city-wise.
• There are road maps present for an entire country
too, but they cannot be made very detailed.

6. Topographic Map- “is similar to a physical
map in that it shows different physical
landscape features. Unlike physical maps,
though, this type of map uses contour lines
instead of colors to show changes in the
landscape. Contour lines on topographic maps
are normally spaced at regular intervals to show
elevation changes ( e.g. each line represents
100 foot elevation change) When lines are close
together, it means the terrain is steep.”

❖Scale of a Map
• The scale of a map shows the relationship between the
distances on the map with respect to actual distances on
the Earth. For example if the scale of a map is 1 cm to a
kilometer, that means 1 cm on the map is equivalent to 1
kilometer on actual ground.
Using a scale you can quite accurately measure the
distance between 2 places.
❖Symbols
• On maps different symbols represent different things, for
example black dots represent cities, circled stars represent
capitals.
• Different types of lines represent roads, highways and
railways.
• Trees and forests are depicted in green, mountains in
brown and rivers and lakes in blue.
• This done for making it easier for us to spot these features
and study the map.

review and leads to individuals, pairs,
or small groups reworking the
information to make it their own.

1. Select activities for students to choose


from and compile them on a student
handout.

2. Write a topic you’ve been studying


on the board,

3. Ask students to generate terms related to the


topic and record them on the blackboard or on
an overhead transparency. Or have students
record their own lists on the handout you
provide.

4. Have students choose from among the


FactStorming choice activities that you provide to
show their understanding about the statement or
topic.
Allow students to work alone, with a partner, or in a
small group. Remind them to reference as many terms
as possible from the list that has been generated

5. After students have worked for about 15–20 minutes


on their task, bring the whole class back together for
sharing. In this way, all students will benefit from
reviewing and synthesizing the material from different
perspectives

6. Finally, you might assign a second-choice activity


for homework. Students should select a different
activity from their first activity. Serving as an individual
formative assessment, this second writing opportunity
will allow students to process information even more
deeply and will further enhance their learning.
