Problem 5 – 15

A liquid having sp. gr. of 2.0 is flowing in a 50mm diameter pipe. The total head at a given point
was found to be 17.5 Joule per Newton. The elevation of the pipe above the datum is 3m and the
pressure in the pipe is 65.6 kPa. Compute the velocity of flow and the horsepower in the stream at that
point.

Solution:

V2 p
Total energy, E = + +z
26 y
E= 17.5 Joule / N x (1 N-m / Joule)
E= 17.5m
v2 65.6
17.5 = 2 g + 9.81 ( 2 ) + 3

v2
=11.156 m
2g
v = 14.79 m/s (Velocity of flow)

Power, P = Q y E
π

4 (0.05) (14.79) x (9810 x 2) x 17.5
= 9970.92 watts x (1 hp/ 746 watts)
Power, P = 13.37 hp
Problem 5 – 16

The pump shown draws water from the reservoir A at elevation 10m and lifts it to the reservoir
B at elevation 60m. The loss of head from A to 1 is two times the velocity head in the 200mm diameter
pipe and the loss of head from 2 to B is ten times the velocity head in the 150mm diameter pipe.

Determine the rated horsepower of the pump and pressure heads at 1 and 2 in meters when
the discharge is 0.03m3/sec.

Solution:

0 + 0 + 10 – 2 (0.0465) + HA – 10 (0.147) = 0 + 0 + 60
HA = 51.563m

Power output = Q y HA = 0.03 (9,810)(51.563)

Power output = 20.34 horsepower (rated power of the pump)

Problem 5-21

For the pipe shown in the Figure v1 = v2 = 1.2m/s. Determine the total head lost between 1 and 2.

Solution:

v1 + v2 = 1.2 m/s

Problem 5-22

A nozzle inclined at an angle of 60 o with the horizontal issues a 50-mm diameter water jet at the
rate of 10 m/s. Neglecting air resistance, what is the area of the jet at the highest point of the
projectile?

Solution:

Solving for velocity of the jet at the summit (highest point, A)

vy = 0
vx = v0x cos Ꝋ
vx = 10 cos 60o = 5 m/s

2 2
v = √ v ox +v oy
v= √ 52 +02=5 m/ s
