NITI Aayog released ‘Vision 2035: Public Health Surveillance in India’, a White Paper
On December 14, 2020, NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog publicized a white
paper titled “Vision 2035: Public Health Surveillance in India” which was released by NITI Aayog Vice
Chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar; Member (Health) Dr Vinod K Paul; Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Amitabh
Kant; and Additional Secretary Dr Rakesh Sarwal. The white paper was co-developed by NITI Aayog and
University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. Both organizations inked a Letter of Agreement (LoA) for the
same in 2020.

India’s 1st Maritime Theatre Command (MTC) will get its final shape in 2021 and its headquarters will
be set up at Karwar Naval Base, Karnataka. It will be the first new “Geographical” Theatre command to
be created as part of military restructuring plans.
India, UK to Set Up Joint Task Force for Mutual Recognition of Academic Qualifications
On December 16, 2020, During the bilateral meeting between Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal
‘Nishank’, Ministry of Education (MoE) and Foreign Secretary of United Kingdom (UK) Dominic Raab, in
New Delhi stated that India and the UK agreed to set up a joint task force consisting of designated
higher education organisations from both the countries to work towards mutual recognition of
academic qualifications over the next year.

Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) in Hyderabad, Telangana has become the first in India to acquire ISO
(International Organization for Standardization) 9001:2015 Quality Management Standards

Ministry of Home Affairs approves Rs. 90.6 Crore to Land Ports Authority of India for new ICP
in Tripura
On 16th December, 2020 the Ministry of Home Affairs approved Rs.90.6 crores to the Land Ports
Authority of India (LPAI) for construction of a new Integrated Check Post (ICP) along the India-
Bangladesh border at Sabroom in South Tripura.This will be the 6th multi-facilitated ICP in the India-
Bangladesh Border.
FADA, ASDC partner with Google India to bridge digital skills gap in India’s auto dealerships
On December 16, 2020, Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) & Automotive Skills
Development Council (ASDC) announced partnership with Google India to reduce the digital skill gap in
India’s auto dealership sector. The Training programme will be conducted under Google India’s ‘Grow
with Google’ initiative.
India to have 350mn 5G connections by 2026: “The Ericsson Mobility Report 2020”
Sweden based networking and communication company Ericsson released a report “The Ericsson
Mobility Report 2020” which estimated India’s 5G connection to surpass 350 million, accounting 27%
of all mobile subscriptions by 2026. The report also notified India’s first 5G connection to be rolled out
by 2021.
51st International Film Festival of India will be held in Goa in Hybrid format
On 17th December, 2020 Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar
announced that the 51st edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will be held in Goa from
January 16 to January 24, 2021. The event will be held in hybrid format i.e., in both Physical and Virtual
format featuring a total of 224 films.
Screenings will continue till India’s Chairmanship of the SCO ‘Council of Heads of State’ meeting in 2023.
The movie series will coincide with “SCO Year of Culture” in 2021.
DAC Approves Military Hardware Procurement worth Rs 28,000 cr during a Meeting in New
Delhi
On December 17, 2020, a Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting was held under the Chairmanship
of Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD) in New Delhi where 7 Capital Acquisition
proposals regarding military hardware worth Rs. 28,000 Crore were approved. This was the first
meeting under the new regime of Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP), 2020 and these are the first set
of Acceptance of Necessity (AoNs).
IndiGrid Collaborates with IBM for Digital Transformation of Critical Power Infrastructure
On December 17, 2020 India Grid Trust (IndiGrid) and IBM enters into a multi-year collaboration
agreement to build asset management platform that is enabled with AI for Digital Transformation of
Critical Power Infrastructure. The Enterprise asset management (EAM) is important to obtain the
insights and the visibility needed to maintain and control intelligent assets and equipment.
Union Ministry of Culture plans a Museum for Netaji Subash Chandra Bose in Kolkata, West
Bengal
The Union Culture Ministry was planning a museum for Netaji in Kolkata, an exhibition at the Victoria
Memorial and cultural performances in West Bengal, as a part of the commemoration of Netaji Subash
Chandra Bose’s 125th birth anniversary in 2022. Historical documents, photos and other materials
would be brought together at one place for display. The commemoration would also be the start of the
celebrations of 75 years of Independence in 2022.

On December 18, 2020, Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry launched Australia
Economic Strategy Report 2020 prepared by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) team, led by
Ambassador Anil Wadhwa, Former Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, with contribution from
KPMG, India. The Report was launched during the CII’s virtual session on Enhancing India Australia
Bilateral Economic and Trade Relationship.
35th edition of IND-INDO CORPAT 2020 held between the Indian Navy and the Indonesian Navy
On December 17-18, 2020, the 35th edition of India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT)
2020 between the Indian Navy and the Indonesian Navy was held to strengthen inter-operability and to
build strong bonds of friendship across the Indo Pacific. The Indian side was represented by Indian
Naval Ship (INS) Kulish, an indigenously built missile corvette along with P8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft
(MPA) while Indonesian side was led by Indonesian Naval Ship KRI Cut Nyak Dien, a Kapitan Pattimura
(Parchim I) class corvette and a MPA of the Indonesian Navy.

On December 18, 2020, Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) signed a Joint Communique

On December 18, 2020, Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE), RK Singh
virtually launched India’s 1st Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Skill Development in Power Sector at the
campus of National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), Gurugram, Haryana. The CoE was established as a
result of a MoU between MSDE, Government of India & the Ministry of National Education & Youth,
Government of the French Republic and Schneider Electric.

8th edition of North East Festival (NEF) 2020 Held in Guwahati, Assam for 1st time
On December 19-20, 2020, the 8th edition of the North East Festival (NEF) 2020 was held at Radisson
Blu Hotel in Guwahati, Assam .It was for the first time that Guwahati hosted this annual two-day event.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Development of
North Eastern Region (DoNER) as the Chief Guest of the festival, Assam Chief Minister (CM) Sarbananda
Sonowal, and Tripura CM Biplab Deb among other dignitaries. The focus of this year was on ‘Growth

Peer to Peer (P2P) Trading Platform for Rooftop Solar Power Producers in Lucknow, UP. The Pilot
project will be implemented by India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF), Power Ledger (Australia based
Blockchain technology partner) & Abajyon Consulting. The project will be hosted by Uttar Pradesh
Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL), Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (MVVNL) & Uttar
Pradesh New & Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA).
RIL, BP commence Gas production from Asia’s Deepest Gas Field ‘R-cluster’
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), BP (formerly known as The British Petroleum Company plc) have
commenced Gas production from Asia’s Deepest Gas Field ‘R-cluster’ situated in the KG-D6 block,
Krishna-Godavari basin of the Bay of Bengal (eastern coast of India). ‘R-cluster’ is the 1st operational
project of the 3 deep-water gas projects. Plateau Gas Production (i.e Constant Production Rate) at the
‘R-Cluster’ is expected to reach ~ 12 Million standard cubic meters per day in 2021.
GOI sets up HLC to Commemorate 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose
On Dec 22, 2020, the Government has decided to constitute a High-Level Committee (HLC), to be
headed by Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), for commemoration of 125th
Birth Anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.Netaji was born on January 23, 1897 at Cuttack,
Bengal Presidency, British India (present-day Odisha, India). A permanent exhibition and a ‘Light and
Sound show’ on Netaji has been planned to be set up at Kolkata at the historic Victoria Memorial
building.
CGWB and CSIR-NGRI sign MoA for High-Resolution Aquifer Mapping & Management in Arid
Region of NW India
On December 21, 2020, a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed between Central Ground
Water Board (CGWB), Ministry of Jal Shakti and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–National
Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI) in Hyderabad (Telangana) for use of advanced heliborne
geophysical survey and other scientific studies in parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana under the
Aquifer Mapping Programme. This is the first time MoJS will use the state of the art technology for
identification of aquifers in large/semi-arid areas. The estimated cost of phase- I of the project would be
Rs 54 Crore.
“JSA II: Catch the Rain” Awareness Generation Campaign Launched by NWM & NYKS
On December 21, 2020, National Water Mission (NWM), Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) in collaboration
with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MoYAS) launched the
“JSA II: Catch the Rain” Awareness Generation Campaign in New Delhi. JSA stands for Jal Shakti Abhiyan.
The awareness generation phase of the campaign will run from mid-December 2020 to March 2021
with the tagline “catch the rain, where it falls, when it falls”.
MPEDA launches India’s 1st Aquafarmers Call Centre at Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh
Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has launched India’s 1st Call Centre for
Aquafarmers at Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. The call centre will handle calls in English & Hindi.
Through the Call Centre, MPEDA will address the technical issues, and impart knowledge about efficient
farming methods. The call centre will primarily cater to the needs of aqua farmers in Andhra Pradesh,
as it is responsible for 60% of India’s marine products export basket. The headquarters of MPEDA is
situated in Kochi, Kerala.
Ministry of Road Transport & Highways proposes adoption of E20 Fuel to curb vehicular
emissions
Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has proposed the adoption of E20 – a blend of 20% of Ethanol
& Gasoline as automobile fuel to reduce vehicular emissions & also to cut India’s oil import bill. Ethanol
is a biofuel, it is a common by-product of biomass left by Agricultural feedstock like Corn, Sugarcane,
Hemp, Potato. At present, only 10% of ethanol blend is permissible in India, but India has reached only
5.6%.

1st TWG Meeting between India, Iran, Uzbekistan on Joint use of Chabahar Port in Iran held
virtually
On December 14, 2020, The First Trilateral Working Group (TWG) meeting was held virtually between
India, Iran & Uzbekistan to discuss the joint use of Chabahar port in Iran to increase regional
connectivity within the 3 countries. The meeting was jointly chaired by Sanjeev Ranjan, Secretary
(Shipping), Government of India, D.Dehkanov, Deputy Minister of Transport of the Republic of
Uzbekistan and Shahram Adamnejad, Deputy Transport Minister of Islamic Republic of Iran. Uzbekistan
& Iran supported India’s proposal of holding “Chabahar Day” on the side line of the International
Maritime Summit, which will be hosted by India in January 2021.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Virtually addressed Climate Ambition Summit 2020
On December 12, 2020, the virtual Climate Ambition Summit 2020 was held to provide a platform for
government and non-governmental leaders to demonstrate their commitment to the Paris Agreement
and the multilateral process. It was co-hosted by the United Kingdom (UK), the United Nations (UN) and
France, in partnership with Chile and Italy. This summit also regarded as a “sprint to Glasgow” as the
26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 26) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate
Change (UNFCCC) is scheduled to take place from 1–12 November 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Global electricity demand in 2020 expected to fall by 2% due to Pandemic - Electricity Market
Report 2020
According to the 1st Ever ‘Electricity Market Report’ 2020 produced by International Energy Agency
(IEA), the Global electricity demand is expected to fall by 2% due to Pandemic. The decline is the
biggest annual decline since the mid-20th century. The 2% drop is larger than the drop in electricity
demand of 0.6% due to the 2009 Global Financial Crisis. The report has also stated that the global
electricity demand will grow by 3 % in 2021 and it will be driven by China and India.
India Slips to 131 in Human Development Report 2020 released by UNDP:Norway tops the list
According to the “Human Development Report 2020 – The next frontier: Human Development and the
Anthropocene” released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), India (score of 0.645)
was ranked 131 in the list of 189 countries based on Human Development Index (HDI). Norway topped
the list with a score of 0.957, the second place was grabbed by 2 countries – Ireland (0.955) and
Switzerland (0.955). The report provides HDI ranks for the year 2019. India slipped two spots to 131, it
ranked 129 in 2019 HDI.
Buildings-related CO2 emissions record high level in 2019 in 2020 Global Status Report
According to the 2020 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction released by Global Alliance
for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), the Building & Construction sector accounted for 38% of
CO2 emissions, and the CO2 emission increased to 9.95 GtCO2 (gigatonnes of carbon dioxide) in 2019.
This is the 5th Edition of the Annual Report.
India, Indonesia hold the 4th Bilateral JWG meeting on Drug Control Cooperation virtually
On 17th December, 2020 The 4th Bilateral Joint Working Group (JWG) between the Narcotics Control
Bureau (NCB), India and the National Narcotics Board (BNN), Indonesia was held virtually. The Indian
side was headed by Rakesh Asthana, Director General of NCB, Ministry of Home Affairs, India & Puji
Sarwono, Deputy of Legal Affairs & Cooperation, NNB, Indonesia led the Indonesian side. Both sides
agreed to hold the 5th India-Indonesia Bilateral JWG Meeting on Drug Control Cooperation in India in
2021.
3rd Meeting of Joint Working Group on Shipping between India-Denmark held Virtually
On December 17, 2020, the 3rd meeting of Joint Working Group (JWG) on shipping between India and
Denmark was held virtually to identify areas of co-operation between the two countries. Indian
Delegation was led by the Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) Dr. Sanjeev
Ranjan while Denmark Delegation was represented by DG, Danish Maritime Authority, Andreas
Nordseth.
Humanitarian and Consular Group, Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade of Australia led the
Australian side. India, Australia strongly opposed the use of terrorist proxies for cross-border
terrorism.
India-Bangladesh Virtual Summit 2020 held between Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina
On December 17, 2020, a virtual India-Bangladesh Summit 2020 was held between Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina which concluded with a Joint
Statement. Haldibari – Chilahati rail link jointly inaugurated by India-Bangladesh Prime Ministers.
Indian Railways spent Rs 82.72 crore to restore the broad-gauge link from Haldibari till the

index
According to the ‘Human Freedom Index 2020: A Global Measurement of Personal, Civil, and Economic
Freedom’ – 6th Annual Report released by Cato Institute of United States & Fraser Institute in Canada,
India ranked 111 in the list of 162 countries. New Zealand (score – 8.87) topped the index followed by
Switzerland & Hong Kong. The Index was prepared by Ian Vásquez and Fred McMahon.

Around 2.1 billion people in Asia-Pacific lack water supply, sanitation: ADB report
According to ‘Asian Water Development Outlook 2020: Advancing Water Security across Asia and the
Pacific’ released by Asian Development Bank (ADB), 2.1 Billion People (1.5 Billion People in rural areas
& 600 Million in urban areas) lack adequate water supply, sanitation in the Asia-Pacific region. Asian
Water Development Outlook (AWDO) 2020 has been jointly prepared by ADB & Asia-Pacific Water
Forum and supported by the Government of Australia. India remains in Nascent stage in all KDs of the
report.
India-Vietnam Virtual Summit 2020 between Prime Ministers Narendra Modi & Nguyen Xuan

On December 21, 2020, the India-Vietnam Virtual Summit 2020 held which was co-chaired by Prime
Minister (PM) Narendra Modi and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc. It held to review the
entire gamut of bilateral relations, and to discuss regional & global issues of mutual interest, including
post-pandemic economic revival.
• Both sides inked 7 MoUs and also set forth the Joint Vision for Peace, Prosperity and People to
guide the future development of India – Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Agreement was signed for US$5 mn Indian Grant Assistance for Army Software Park at Nha
Trang.
• Implementation of the High Speed Guard Boat (HSGB) Manufacturing Project for Vietnam
Border Guard Command under the US$ 100 million Defence Line of Credit extended by
Government of India (GoI) to Vietnam. In this regard, concrete actions proposed to be taken by
both sides as per Plan of Action for period 2021-2023.

NDB inked $1bn Loan Agreement with GoI for Economic Revival
On December 16, 2020, a loan agreement was inked between Government of India (GoI) and New
Development Bank (NDB) headquartered at Shanghai, China under which the latter will lend $1,000
million ($1 billion) for supporting the former’s economic recovery from COVID-19. The loan has a tenor
of 30 years, including a 5-year grace period. The funding is a part of NDB’s fast-track emergency
response to COVID-19.
RBI Invited Application for 2nd Test Phase of Regulatory Sandbox on Cross Border Payments

On December 18, 2020 The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Government of India signed a $4.21
million (Around 31 Crore Rupees) Project Readiness Financing (PRF) facility for Tripura Urban and
Tourism Development Project. This is ADB’s 1st PRF facility for a North-eastern state of India. Dr. C. S.

RBI Further Extends Restrictions on PMC Bank till March 31, 2021
On December 18, 2020 The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) further extended the restrictions of Punjab and
Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank headquartered at Mumbai, Maharashtra Limited for a period of 3
months from December 23, 2020 to March 31, 2021. All other terms and conditions of the Directives
under reference shall remain unchanged. Earlier the restriction was imposed till June 23, 2020 and then
changed until December 22, 2020.
RBI extended CKYCR to Legal Entities from Individual Accounts w.e.f. April 1, 2021: December
2020
On December 18, 2020, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has amended the Master Direction (MD) on
“Know Your Customer (KYC)”, dated February 25, 2016, by extending the applicability of centralized
KYC registry to legal entities (LEs), from individual accounts w.e.f. April 1, 2021.In this regard,
Regulated entities (REs) will upload the KYC data pertaining to the accounts of LEs opened on or after 1
April 2021, on to CKYCR in terms of Rule 9 (1A) of the PML (Prevention of Money-laundering) Rules.
PayU Collaborates with Google Pay to Introduce Tokenised Payments Flow for Merchants

ADB Approves $231 Million Loan to Construct Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Power Plant
On December 19, 2020 The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $231 million (Around Rs 1,705
crore) loan to construct the Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Power (LKHEP) plant in Central Assam, India.
This loan is the 3rd and largest tranche of the $300 million (about Rs 2,200 crore) Assam Power Sector
Investment Program that was approved by ADB in 2014.
ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund Launched ‘ICICI Prudential Business Cycle Fund’, an Open-Ended
Equity Scheme
On December 21, 2020 ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund launched ‘ICICI Prudential Business Cycle Fund’,

ADB, Northern Arc Capital Ltd Signed a $40 million loan to Support Microfinance Borrowers
and MSMEs in India
On December 21, 2020 The Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $40 million (around Rs 295 crore)
loan to Northern Arc Capital Ltd (NACL) for on lending to microfinance borrowers, Micro, Small, and
Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and affordable housing finance companies in India who are facing
difficulties to attract debt funding from investors. As part of ADB’s ongoing COVID-19 response, this
rupee denominated loan is given to NACL.
Fitch revised India GDP forecast for FY21 to -9.4% from -10.5%
On December 8, 2020, Fitch Ratings in its recent Global Economic Outlook-December 2020 upgraded
the India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecast to – 9.4% in FY21 from a previously projected
contraction of 10.5% (-10.5%). The Fitch projections regarding GDP for FY22 and FY23 remained
unchanged at 11% and 6.3% respectively. In FY20, there was a GDP growth of 4.2%.
ADB Revised India’s GDP Forecast for FY21 to -8% from -9%
The Asian Development Bank’s ‘Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2020 Supplement: Paths Diverge in
Recovery from the Pandemic’- December 2020, has revised India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) FY21
rate upwards to -8% (contract by 8) from -9% projected in Asian Development Outlook 2020 Update in
September 2020. The Growth will return in 2021 at 8.0% in India.
CRISIL Revised India’s GDP for FY21 to -7.7% against -9% Predicted in September 2020
On December 14, 2020, Rating agency CRISIL (Credit Rating Information Services of India Limited)
projected a slower contraction of 7.7% (-7.7%) for India’s real gross domestic product (GDP) in FY21 as
compared to the -9% forecast in September 2020. The key reason behind this upward revision is faster-
than-expected recovery in the Q2FY21 (July-September 2020). For FY22, CRISIL projected a GDP
growth of 10% due to weak base and global ‘rising tide’ effect.
S&P Revises India’s Real GDP Forecast for FY21 to -7.7% from -9%
On December 15, 2020 Standard & Poors(S&P) Global Ratings has revised India’s real Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) FY21 rate upwards to -7.7% (contract by 7%) from -9% projected earlier on rising
demand and falling COVID infection rates. The growth of India will rebound to 10% in FY22. In FY21
India’s GDP contracted by 7.5% (-7.5%) in the July-September quarter and in April-June quarter
contracted by 23.9% (-23.9%).
India’s FY21 GDP to Contract by 7.4% from -10.9%: SBI’s Ecowrap Report
On December 2020 , Ecowrap report of the State Bank of India (SBI) has estimated that India’s Gross
domestic Product(GDP) will contract by 7.4%(-7.4%) from -10.9% projected earlier based on the better
than expected recovery. It also projected that the GDP growth in FY22 will be at 11% due to base effect.
On the basis of SBI ‘Nowcasting Model’ with 41 high frequency indicators associated with industry
activity, service activity, and global economy, the bank has revised the GDP estimates.

Russia Test Launches ‘Angara A5’ Heavy Lift Space Rocket from Plesetsk Cosmodrome
On 14th December, 2020, Russia Successfully test launched ‘Angara A5’ - Heavy Lift Space Rocket from
Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Northwest Russia. This is the 2nd successful test flight of the vehicle after 1st
successful test flight in 2014. Angara is a new series of space launchers being built by Russia after the

SpaceX’s 1st Super Heavy-lift Starship exploded during Return- landing attempt
SpaceX's first super heavy-lift Starship Prototype “SN8 rocket” explodes during a return-landing
attempt after it was launched from the company's rocket facility in Boca Chica, Texas. Elon Musk's
private space company plans to carry humans and 100 tons of cargo on future missions to the moon
and Mars through SN8 rockets. Propelled by three of SpaceX's newly developed Raptor engines the
flight reached an altitude of 41,000 feet, But the self-guided rocket blew up as it touched down on a

ICGS C-454 commissioned in Hazira Plant, Gujarat; Built by Larsen & Toubro
On December 15, 2020, indigenously built Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) – C-454 Interceptor boat was
commissioned at Hazira, Surat, Gujarat by Surat Police Commissioner Ajay Tomar. The ship has been
built by Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The ship will be used for tightening security along Gujarat’s 1600 km
maritime borders.C-454 Interceptor Boat is the 54th boat built by L&T for ICG.
Israel successfully Test fires 3 Missile Defence Systems over Mediterranean Sea
On December 15, 2020, Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) together with United States Missile
Defense Agency (MDA) successfully test fired a series of Israel’s 3 multi-range missile defence systems
namely – “Arrow”, “David’s Sling” & “Iron Dome” over the Mediterranean Sea. The tests are being
conducted amidst heightening tensions between Israel & Iran.” Arrow Missile” – An anti-ballistic missile

ICG Launches 5th & Final OPV ‘Saksham’ in Goa; to be delivered to ICG by October, 2021
On December 14, 2020, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) launched the 5th & Final Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV)
‘Saksham’ into water at Vasco da Gama, Goa. The OPV is being built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and
is expected to be delivered to the ICG by October 2021. The ship was launched by Jayanthi Natarajan,
wife of K Natarajan, Director General (DG) of Indian Coast Guard. It will be used for protection of
Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) in India.

New species of Pygmy Grasshopper named “Tettilobus trishula” after Shiva’s Trishul
A new species of wide-nosed Pygmy Grasshopper documented by researchers in Eravikulam National
Park (Idukki, Kerala) in January, 2018 has been named ‘Tettilobus Trishula’ (common name Shiva’s
pygmy trishula) as its protrusion in pronotum resembles the three-pronged spear ‘Trishul’ used by
Lord Shiva. The discovery has been published in the Journal Zootaxa.
India records 60% rise in Leopard population across the Country: Status of Leopards in India,
2018 report
On December 21, 2020, Union Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC), Prakash
Javadekar released the ‘Status of Leopards in India, 2018’ report. The report states that India has
recorded a 60% rise in Leopard population across the country and it now has 12, 852 Leopards. The
states Madhya Pradesh (3, 421), Karnataka (1, 783) & Maharashtra (1, 690) recorded the most number
of leopards.

India Pledges USD 1 Million to WADA’s Scientific Research Budget towards doping free sport
On December 17, 2020, India pledged to contribute USD 1 Million (Approximately INR 7.35 Crores) to
the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Scientific Research Budget. The amount will be India’s
contribution to WADA’s initiative of raising a corpus of USD 10 Million.This will contribute greatly
towards WADA’s mission for doping-free sport. The contribution will be used for the development of
innovative anti-doping testing and detection methods.

Sport in India
On 17th December, 2020 Ministry of AYUSH and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports jointly announced
the formal recognition of Yogasana as a Competitive sport in India. The ministries also plan to conduct
‘National Individual Yogasana Sports Championship’ in February 2021. Yogasana will be included in
Khelo India and other University games making its way for National games.
Anshu Malik wins India’s First Medal at the Wrestling-Individual World Cup 2020
On 16th December, 2020 India’s Women wrestler Anshu Malik won the Silver medal in the 57 Kg
category at the Individual World Cup 2020 held at Belgrade, Serbia. She won the first and only medal
winner in the event where Indian side was represented by 24 wrestlers.In the Gold medal fight, Anshu
Malik lost to reigning European champion Anastasia Nichita of Moldova.
Sports Ministry approves inclusion of 4 Indigenous Games to be part of Khelo India Youth
Games 2021
Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has approved the inclusion of 4 Indigenous Games – Punjab’s Gatka,
Kerala’s Kalaripayattu, Manipur’s Thang-Ta and Madhya Pradesh’s & Maharashtra’s Mallakhamba as
part of the 4th Edition Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) in 2021 set to take place at Panchkula, Haryana.
Along with the 4 games, Yogasana will also be a part of the Khelo India Youth Games 2021.
Indian Boxers bag 9 medals at the Cologne Boxing World Cup 2020
Indian Boxers bagged 9 Medals - 3 Gold, 2 Silver & 4 Bronze at the Cologne Boxing World Cup 2020 held
from December 16-20 at Cologne, Germany. India finished 2nd in the overall Medals List, Germany
topped the list with 16 medals. The Cologne Boxing World Cup 2020 was hosted by the European
Boxing Confederation (EUBC).

Forms of Cricket
On December 20, 2020 Vijaykumar Yo Mahesh, who played for TamilNadu and Chennai Super
Kings(CSK) announced retirement from all forms of cricket. The right-arm medium-fast
bowler(seamer) has also played for Delhi Daredevils. He took 108 wickets in 50 first-class games and
93 wickets in List A cricket at an average of 24.67.

Padma Awardee & Eminent Aerospace Scientist Roddam Narasimha Passed Away at 87
On 14th December 2020, the eminent Aerospace scientist, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan
Awardee, Roddam Narasimha passed away at the age of 87 at a private hospital in Bengaluru,
Karnataka. He was born on 20th July 1933, Bengaluru, Karnataka. He received the Padma Bhushan in
1987 and Padma Vibhushan in 2013 for science and Engineering. He authored the book “Developments
in Fluid Mechanics and Space Technology” along with former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
Indian Navy’s Senior Most Submariner, Vice Admiral Srikant passed away
On 15th December, 2020 Indian Navy’s Senior Most Submariner and the current director general of
Project Seabird, Vice Admiral Srikant passed away after suffering from COVID-19 infection. Vice
Admiral Srikant is the current Director general of Indian government’s largest infrastructure project
“Project Seabird”.
Father of Fiber Optics Narinder Singh Kapany India born American Physicist Passed Away at 94
On 4th December 2020 Narinder Singh Kapany, known as the “Father of Fiber Optics”, who coined the
term Fiber optics in 1956, passed away at the age of 94 in California, United States. He was an India
born American physicist who was named as one of the seven “Unsung Heroes” in Fortune’s
“Businessmen of the Century” issue of November 1999. He was born in 1927 in Moga, Punjab.
Former Liverpool manager & France Football Coach, Gérard Houllier Passed Away at 73
On December 14, 2020 Gérard Paul Francis Houllier, former Liverpool manager & Football Coach,
Manager of French National Team passed away at the age of 73 after having a heart operation in Paris,
France. He was the head of global football for Red Bull. He was born on 3rd September 1947 in
Thérouanne, France. He also served as the manager of Paris Saint-Germain, Lens and Aston Villa. He
was also the coach of Olympique Lyonnais.
Om Birla Released a book ‘The Shaurya Unbound-Tales of Valour of the Central Reserve Police
Force’
On the occasion of the 19th anniversary of the Parliament attack 2020 ( December 13)Om Birla,
Speaker of the Lok Sabha released a Hindi version of a book, ‘The Shaurya Unbound-Tales of Valour of
the Central Reserve Police Force’ at the parliament house, New Delhi, India.The book is co-authored by
Ms Nitu, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and M. Dhinakaran, DIG
CRPF along with their team consisting of Mr Amit, Assistant Commandant CRPF and Inspector Deepak
Saxena.
VP Venkaiah Naidu Released “Oh, Mizoram”, Book of English Poems by P S Sreedharan Pillai

On 18th December 2020, M Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India virtually released the book titled
“Oh, Mizoram”, a collection of poems written by P S Sreedharan Pillai, the Governor of Mizoram. The
book is published by Indus Scrolls Press. This is the first poem collection written by P S Sreedharan
Pillai. The book displays his love for nature and the poems portray the magnificence of Mizoram at its
best.
EAM S. Jaishankar launched book titled, “Reporting India: My Seventy 0Year Journey As A
Journalist”
On 18th December, 2020 External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar virtually launched the book
‘Reporting India: My Seventy-Year Journey as a Journalist’ written by Asia News International (ANI)
Chairman Prem Prakash. The book came as an outcome of the author’s experience over the years,
where he has interacted with almost all the Prime Ministers of India.

IBM Collaborates with TASK to offer online Skill Development Programs in Telangana
On 14th December, 2020 Technology giant International Business Machines (IBM) announced
collaboration with Telangana Academy for Skill and Knowledge (TASK) to offer free degree and
polytechnic courses on emerging technologies to empower 30,000 students yearly through IBM’s free
digital education platform “Open P-TECH” for a period of one year.
Andhra CM Jaganmohan Reddy launches ‘YSR Free Crop Insurance Scheme’ for Farmers
On 15th December, 2020, Andhra Pradesh (AP) Chief Minister (CM) Jaganmohan Reddy launched ‘YSR
Free Crop Insurance Scheme’ for farmers who have lost their crops during Kharif 2019. An amount of
INR 1, 252 Crores was directly credited into the bank account of around 9.48 Lakh farmers. The AP
government has paid the entire premium on behalf of the famers, it has paid around INR 971 crore as
premium for the period 2019-20.
Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik launches PAReSHRAM portal with 22 online services of Different
Labour Laws
On December 17, 2020 Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Odisha virtually launched PAReSHRAM portal
with 22 online services of different labour laws and Employees State Insurance (E.S.I) Department
under the 5T initiative of the state govt.5T– Technology, Transparency, Teamwork and Time Leading to
Transformation. The portal will provide 52 types of services shortly.
SIDBI Signs MoU with Assam Govt to Develop MSME Ecosystem in the State
On December 19, 2020 The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI)signed MoU with the
Government of Assam to develop the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) ecosystem in the
State. As per the MoU, a Project Management Unit (PMU) will be set up by SIDBI in Assam. SIDBI’s
partnership with Assam is part of SIDBI’s initiative to set-up PMU to strengthen the MSME ecosystem in
11 states namely Gujarat, Odisha, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, New Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar
Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka .
UP CM launches 1st of its kind Campaign, ‘Varasat’& will Launch Kisan Kalyan Mission
On December 15, 2020 Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh launched a first of its kind 2-
month campaign, ‘Varasat’(natural succession) drive to end property and related disputes in rural areas
of the state. UP govt to double the farmers’ income will launch ‘Kisan Kalyan Mission’.Aim of the
campaign is to eliminate the exploitation of the villagers in the name of ‘Varasat’ of land and property.
UN Women Signs MoU with Kerala Govt’s Gender Park for India’s first Gender Data Hub
On December 21, 2020 UN Women signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kerala Govt’s
Gender Park to establish India’s first Gender Data Hub at the Gender Park at 24-acre Kozhikode campus,
where International Institute for Gender and Development is also present.Gender Park will function as
the South Asian hub for gender equality that aims to share knowledge and experiences from the region.
DITECH, Haryana & India Accelerator sign MoU to improve startup ecosystem in Haryana
Startup Haryana setup by the Department of Information Technology, Electronics, and Communication
(DITECH), Government of Haryana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India
Accelerator (IA) to build a strong startup ecosystem in Haryana. The MoU will help in bridging the gap
between Industry & startups.
Gujarat, Cerestra Ventures sign MoU to set up Gujarat-Special Education Region at Dholera
On December 21, 2020, Government of Gujarat & Cerestra Ventures entered into a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of Gujarat-Special Education Region (G-SER) at the Dholera
Special Investment Region (SIR). The establishment of G-SER will help in overall development of the
region, and in the establishment of Gujarat as a knowledge-driven economy.
