Gen. Math Module 1

This document provides examples and explanations of functions in mathematics. It defines a function as a relation between variables where each value of the first variable is mapped to exactly one value of the second variable. Examples are given to illustrate functions and non-functions. The vertical line test is introduced as a way to determine if a graph represents a function. Examples are then provided of evaluating specific functions by inputting values for variables in functional equations and solving for the output.

Concepts of Functions or not.
a. f= {(10, -1), (2, -5), (4, -9), (6, -13)}
b. R= {(a, o), (b, -1), (c,0), (d, -1)}
c. g = (5, -10), (25, -75), (50, -100)
d. T = {(-2,0), (-1,1), (0,1), (-2,2)}
Solution: The examples given in (a) and (b) are functions since no
two ordered pairs have the same value of x.
Example (c) is not a function as it does not indicate a set. It
simply a listing of ordered pairs. Example (d) is not a
function because there are ordered pairs having the same
first element x.
The idea of function can also be extended to real life
situation. For example, plants rely on the amount of sunlight
and rainfall for growth. The are of a square is defined by the
length of its side. In the same manner, the relationship that
exist between chemical element and its corresponding

Example 4: Find the value of y in the equation y = 3x – 2 if x = -1

Solution: Substitute the value of x into the given equation, then

solve for y.
Y = 3x -2
= 3 ( -1) -2
= -5
Therefore, in the given equation, if x = -1, then y = -5. These values
can be written as an ordered pair ( -1, -5).

a. f( 4)
