Math 6 DLP 48 - Finding The Base When The Percentage and Rate Are Given

This document teaches how to find the base when given the percentage and rate. It provides examples such as finding the original price of shoes given a discount percentage. The key formula is B = P/R, where B is the base, P is the percentage expressed as a decimal, and R is the rate. Several practice problems are included to help understand applying the concept, along with an answer key.

MATH
FINDING THE BASE WHEN THE
PERCENTAGE AND RATE ARE GIVEN

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development
To the Learner

It’s another day of learning new knowledge and skills in Math my

dear. I hope you are doing well today for I will teach you how to find
the base when the percentage and rate are given.

Let’s Learn This

This learning module is all about finding the base when the
percentage and rate are given. The exercises and the activities being
prepared will help you understand how the base is being computed.

Let’s Try This

Find the base.

1. 10% of =8
2. 10% of =5
3.25% of = 16
4. 30% of = 60
5. 50% of = 80

Let’s Study This

Finding the base when percentage and rate are given.

A pair of leather shoes was on sale and was given a discount of

P 600 at 30%. What was the original price of the shoes?

Think: 30% of what number is P 600?

rate base percentage
Solution:
Step 1. Write an equation. 30% of N = P 600
Step 2. Express the percent as a decimal. 0.30 x N = P 600
Step 3. Divide to solve. N = P 600
0.30
2000
0.30 600.00

Answer: The original price is P 2,000.00

To solve for the base, we use the formula

B = P B = base
R
Where, P = percentage
R = rate

- 69 -
Rate(R) must be expressed as a decimal before dividing.

Another example:

1. 14 is 20% of what number?

P R B

14 = 20% x N
14 = .20 x N
N = 14
.20
N = 70

2. 15% of what number is 18?

R B P

15% x N = 18
.15 x N = 18
N = 18
.15

N = 120

Let’s Do This

Solve for the base.

1. 20% of what number is 20?

2. 36% of what number is 36?

3. 20% of what number is 10?

4. 10% of what number is 20?

5. 5% of what number is 30?

- 70 -
Let’s Do More

Find the base.

1. 28 is 4% of what number?

2. 25% of what number is 100?

3. 69 is 75% of what number?

4. 15% of what number is 9?

5. 12% of what number is 60?

Let’s Remember This

 To solve for the base divide the percentage by the rate. Use
the formula B = P where R is expressed as decimal.

Let’s Test Ourselves

Activity – “Tower Power”

What to do:

Prince Dennis has to save Princess Cherryl Mae. He has to climb

the top of the tower using the ladder to reach the top, he needs to
answer first the problem written on each step of the ladder. He has to
answer all the questions correctly to save the princess because if not,
he will be burned by the guarding dragon.

Let’s Consider This

What’s your score?

 If your score is 8-10, excellent job! You can now

proceed to the next module.
 If your score is 5-7, answer the “Let’s Enrich Ourselves.”
 If your score is below 5, review the whole module.
