031/2 PRACTICAL
INSTRUCTION
1. This paper consists of two (2) questions. Answer all the questions.
2. Whenever calculations are involved show your work clearly.
3. Marks for question are indicated at the end of each question.
4. Write your Examination number on every page of your answer booklet(s)
5. Whenever necessary use the following constants:
Pie, π=3.14
1. The aim of this experiment is to determine the acceleration due to gravity “g” by means
of pendulum bob, “B”
Procedures:
(a) Tie a thread to the given pendulum bob make a knot of a distance from the bob.
This distance should be of the order of 10cm. measure and record distance, “b”
between the knot “N” and the pendulum bob “B”.
The distance between the knot N and the point of suspension Y is denoted by X as indicated
above. Adjust X to be 10cm displace the pendulum by small angle and then release it so that it
swings to and fro with small amplitude of vibration. Find the time “t” for 20 oscillations and
hence determine the periodic time T for one oscillation.
௫ା
(d). If the periodic time T is related to X by the equation T=2πට
(25 marks)
2. You are provided with a white sheet of paper, drawing board, plane mirror with
holders,optical pins and thumb pins.
Proceed as follows:
(a) Put the drawing paper on the drawing board and draw two lines AB and CD to enclose an
angle α=10o. Draw the line through O making 75o with AB, then insert two pins P and Q
on this line as shown in the figure.
(b) Place the reflecting surface of the mirror along AB, place other optical pins R and S
to appear in straight line with images of P and Q. Remove the pins R and S and join
the line ORS
(c)Turn the mirror through an angle α=15˚,20˚,25˚ and 30˚
(j) State two(2) sources of error of this experiment and its precautions
(25 marks)
