En Math 1 - Differential Calculus Activity #1: Functions: Camarines Norte State College

This document contains a math activity on functions and limits for a Differential Calculus course. It provides 12 practice problems for students to solve involving: constructing functional notation for real world scenarios; identifying if a set of ordered pairs represents a function; evaluating functions for given values; and calculating limits. The problems cover key concepts in functions and limits that are the intended learning outcomes of the activity. It reminds students that a complete solution showing work is required and to write neatly using only ballpoint pens.

Activity #1: Functions
Name: __________________________________ Course/Yr/Block: __________

Intended Learning Outcome: To be able to identify and evaluate functions, construct a

functional notation and evaluate limits of a function.
Content/Topics: Functions and Limits
Directions: Solve the following problems on a clean sheet of paper. Show a complete solution
and write legibly. Use ballpens only.

Construct a functional notation on the following problems.

1. Express the volume of a cube as a function of the length of an edge.
2. A rectangular storage container with an open top and a square base has a volume of 8
cubic meters. Material for the base costs $5 per square meter and material for the sides $2
per square meter. Find a formula that expresses the total cost of materials as a function of
the length of a side of the base.
3. You want to paint the top of a circular table. Find a formula that expresses the amount of
paint required as a function of the radius.

Shown below is a set of ordered pairs (x,y) does it represent a function? Why? Why not?

4. (5, -8), (9, -5), (7, -5)

(5-7) Evaluate the following function:

If 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥, find

5. 𝑓 (−4)
6. 𝑓 (𝑥 + 1) − 𝑓(𝑥 − 1)
7. 𝑓 (𝑦 2 + 1)

Evaluate the limit of the following:

𝑥 3 −𝑥 2
8. lim
𝑥→1 𝑥−1
𝑥 3 −𝑥 2
9. lim
𝑥→−1 𝑥−1
