Earth Filling

This project report discusses earth filling and compaction. It explains that earth filling involves compacting soil in layers no more than 300-450mm thick that is free of debris. Proper compaction is important to prevent settlement cracks. The process of compaction increases soil density by pressing particles together and forcing out air using mechanical equipment like rollers, rammers, and vibrators. Precautions like maintaining optimum moisture content and getting approval before backfilling are also outlined. In conclusion, earth filling and compaction done correctly in layers is important for preventing foundation and flooring failures.

 Introduction

 Earth Filling In Plinth Area

 Process of Compaction of Soil

 Conclusion
Introduction
Earth filling is a task which is done with compacting the floor’s soil about 6 layers and

the layers should not exceeding 300 mm to 450 mm in thickness. The soil used for filling should

be free from grass, roots, leaves and other foreing material. It should better slightly moist

which will help to achieve optimum compaction.

Earth Filling In Plinth Area

The plinth of the structure is of certain height and is filled by the various materials. As

different material is used, each material will have different property and thus different effect in

the structure. The different filling material that could be use is red clayey soil, stone dust,

,sandy soil etc.

Backfilling shall be done after the foundation has completely set. Backfilling shall be carried out

in layers and each layer shall be thoroughly compacted. Inadequate compaction is likely to cause

settlement of backfilling resulting in development of cracks in flooring. Mechanical rammers are

preferable to hand rammers. Use hand rammers where the area is inaccessible to mechanical rammers.

Filling layers not exceeding 250mm in thickness.

Some precaution and safety measure

1. Backfilling work should not start until the Site Engineer gives his approval to do so.

Material use for backfilling shall be any one or combination of different soil types.

2. Backfilling shall be done layers of thickness not exceeding 30 cm to 40 cm depending on

compaction equipment and method. The soil layer should slightly moist which will help

to achieve its optimum compaction.

3. After compaction of final layer of soil Site Engineer should test the soil at least from 3

cores and it should be tested in laboratory for the degree of compaction achieve.

4. If the soil is excessively wet, it shall be allow to dry sufficiently before compaction.

Approximately OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT should be maintained.

5. Compaction should be done with mechanize way but in some cases it should be done by

hand as directed by the Site Engineer.

Process of Compaction of Soil

it is an instantaneous process in partially saturated/dry soil by which density in

increased by compactive efforts. compaction means to press the soil particles to each other by

mechanical method. During compaction air is forced out from voids and hence density is

increased. Objective of compaction is to increase the density, bearing capacity, shear strength.

. Some field compaction equipment are:

a) Rollers

b) Rammers

c) Vibrators.
CONCLUSION

Earth filling and Compaction should be done after properly complete the set up of foundation. It

should be done in layers properly as to prevent the failure of foundation and flooring of the structure. It

should be done by mechanically or hand operate to compact the soil on the site.
