ABSTRACT
Each and every day the prices of petrol and diesel keeps on fluctuating. They increase with
higher rate but rarely falls down. This is tremendously depleting the fuel reserves. So basically it
is important to design such vehicle that could work on electric energy rather than fuels, as
electric energy is available in larger amount compared to fuels.
This paper aims to design and development of working model of cost effective electric go-kart.
Main objective behind designing and fabricating the electric go -kart is to make it available in
cheap price, making it simple in working for even nonprofessional drivers, increasing is strength
so that it can sustain more weight and providing it with all the best available facilities in lower
cost . The paper mainly focuses on the material selection and designing of cheaper electric
system compared to other electric go-karts manufactured, calculations required for designing
the kart, basic required analysis.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
I.I BACKGROUND:
Driving a vehicle requires complete concentration, reflexive action and quick decision making
abilities for the drivers to avoid any untoward incidences. The consumption of alcohol beyond
safety limits can obstruct functioning of the brain and impact "presence-of-mind" capability of
the driver resulting in accidents that can prove fatal not only for the driver but also for the
fellow-passenger in turn , it can result in endless trauma to the members of the family back-
home. The technology-enabled device if fitted in the car will test the multiple-conditions that
will trigger the alarm indicating that the current state of mind of the driver is not apt to behind
the wheels.
1.2 OBJECTIVES:
The MQ-3 sensor is used in the project to detect alcohol level. The sensor detects the alcohol
consumption by the smell of the breath. The sensor is an analog as well as a digital sensor
which on its analog pin outputs the analog voltage proportional to the alcohol level. The project
is built on Arduino UNO R3 as the device is designed to be a handheld device. Apart from the
MQ-3 sensor, a D.C. motor, an LED, a buzzer and an l6x2 LCD Display is also interfaced to the
controller board to move the dial md indicate a dangerous level of consumption through LED
and bwzer indication. The reading taken bytlre sensor is displayed on a l6x2 character LCD
Display.
The Arduino sketch manages to take the reading from the MQ-3 sensor, digitize and display
reading compare reading with a threshold level and operate LED as well as the D.C. motor to
indicate a dangerous level of consumption. The Arduino code is written on Arduino IDE and
burnt to the Uno R3 using the same.
The alcohol sensor we will use is the MQ-3 sensor. This is a sensor that is not only
sensitive to alcohol, particularly ethanol, which is the type of alcohol which is found in
wine, beer, and liquor.
This type of sensor circuit can be used as a breathalyzer to check a person's blood
alcohol level. Just as we exhale carbon dioxide when we breathe out, we also will
breathe out some alcohol if we have alcohol in our blood. Any alcometer device can
measure this alcohol content.
The more ethanol in your blood, the more there is in the air on exhalation. This alcohol
content gives a good indication for if a person is drunk and how drunk they are.
The amount of alcohol exhaled into the air is proportional to the amount of alcohol
which will be found in a person's blood. Alcometers use a built-in formula to estimate
blood alcohol content from exhaled air alcohol content.
For different countries, the level of alcohol in the blood that defines a person as over
the limit for driving varies. The range ranges from 0.01 to 0.10. Most countries have a
limit of about 0.05. For example, Greece, Greenland, and Iceland all have limits of 0.05.
Canada has higher limit set at 0.08. In the United States, it is also 0.08. This means that if
the alcometer reading measures above this, the person can receive a DUI.
For our circuit, it can function as an alcometer so that we get an estimate of a person's
To connect the sensor, there are 4leads. 2 of them are for power. The +5V terminal of the
sensor connects into the 5V terminal of the arduino board. The GND terminal of the sensor
connect into the GND terminal of the arduino. This establishes power for the sensor.
The other 2 connections are the analog and digital output of the sensor. These connect to
analog pin A0 and digital pin D8, respectively.

DISCRIPTION OF COMPEMENTS
DC motors were the first type widely used, since they could be powered from existing direct-
current lighting power distribution systems. A DC motor's speed can be controlled over a wide
range, using either a variable supply voltage or by changing the strength of current in its field
windings.
Basic DC Motors are Available in local shops, but for special ones and all variety at cheap prices
online sources like nevonexpress.com can be used
Gear
A gear or cogwheel is a rotating machine part having cut teeth, or in the case of a cogwheel,
inserted teeth (called cogs), which mesh with another toothed part to transmit torque. Geared
devices can change the speed, torque, and direction of a power source. Gears almost always
produce a change in torque, creating a mechanical advantage, through their gear ratio, and
thus may be considered a simple machine. The teeth on the two meshing gears all have the
same shape.[1] Two or more meshing gears, working in a sequence, are called a gear train or
a transmission. A gear can mesh with a linear toothed part, called a rack,
producing translation instead of rotation.
5.2 Fastener
A fastener (US English) or fastening (UK English) is a hardware device that mechanically
joins or affixes two or more objects together. In general, fasteners are used to create
non-permanent joints; that is, joints that can be removed or dismantled without
damaging the joining components. Welding is an example of creating permanent
joints. Steel fasteners are usually made of stainless steel, carbon steel, or alloy steel.
Figure:1.2 Fasteners
Sprockets are used in bicycles, motorcycles, cars, tracked vehicles, and other machinery.
Chains & Sprokets can be obtained from special chain sproket suppliers or online via
nevonexpress.com.
Bearing housings can be made of different types and sizes according to the requirement.
It can be made up of any material which is suitable to the machine and climatic conditions
where the machine is to be used.
Bearin housings can be obtained from special bearing housing suppliers or online via
nevonexpress.com
Spacer is a metal cylindrical part with threading on its both end used to give
spacing between two parallel parts.
Couplings and spacers can be obtained from special coupling and spacers suppliers or online via
nevonexpress.com.
This module is made using Alcohol Gas Sensor MQ3. It is a low cost semiconductor sensor
which can detect the presence of alcohol gases at concentrations from 0.05 mg/L to l0 mSL The
sensitive material used for this sensor is SnO2, whose conductivity is lower in clean air' It's
conductivity increases as the concentration of alcohol gases increases. It has high sensitivity to
alcohol and has a good resistance to disturbances due to smoke, vapor and gasoline. This
module provides both digital and analog outputs. Me3 alcohol sensor module can be easily
interfaced with Microcontrollers' Arduino Boards, Raspberry Pi etc.
This alcohol sensor is suitable for detecting alcohol concentration on your breath' just like your
common breathalyzer. It has a high sensitivity and fast response time. sensor provides an
analog resistive output based on alcohol concentration. The drive circuit is very simple, all it
needs is one resistor. A simple interface could be a 0-3.3V ADC.
The Arduino Uno is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328' It has 20 digital
input/output pins (of which 6 can be used as PWM output s and 6 can be used as analog
inputs)' a 16 MHz resonator. a USB connection, a power jack, an in-.circuit system
programming (ICSP) header' and a reset button. It contains everything needed to *support the
*micro controller; simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or, power, it wiith a Ac-to-
DC adapter or battery to get started.
The Uno differs from all preceding boards in that it does not use the FTDI USB-to-serial driver
chip. Instead, it features an ATmega16U2 programmed as. a USB-to-serial converter' This
auxiliary microcontroller has its own UB boot loader, which allows advanced users to
reprogram it.
the Arduino has a large suppotl community and an extensive set of support libraries and
hardware add-on'.shields" making it a great introductory platform for embedded electronics.
This is the 3rd revision of the Uno (R3)' which has a number of changes:
The USB controller chip changed from ATrnegaSU2 (8K flash; to ATmegal6U2 (l6K flash).
This does not increase the flash or RAM available to sketches.
Three new pins were added, all of which are duplicates of previous pins. The I2C pins
(A4, A5) have been also been brought out on the side of the board near AREF. There is a
IOREF pin next to the reset pin, which is a duplicate of the 5V pin.
The reset button is now next to the USB connector, making it more accessible when a
shield is used.
l6x2 LCD is named so because; it has 16 Columns and 2 Rows. There are a lot of combinations
available like, 8>:1, 8x2, 70x2,16x1 etc. But the most used one is the 16*2 LCD' hence we are
using it here. All the above mentioned LCD display will have 16 Pins and the programming
approach is also the same and hence the choice is left to you. Below the Pin out and Pin
Description of l6x2 LCD Module is given.

Low Power consumption.
It provides an automatic safety system for cars and other vehicles as well.
6.2 APPLICATION :
l) ,.Alcohol Detection Alert and Car Engine Blocking System" can be used in the various vehicles
for detecting whether the driver has consumed alcohol or not.
2) This project can also be used in various companies or organization to detect alcohol
consumption of employees.
2) We can implement GPS technology to find out the location of the vehicle.
6.4 RESULT:
6.5 CONCLUSION:
In this project we have developed a real time model that can automatically lock the engine
when a drunken driver tries to drive a car. Now-a-days car accidents are mostly seen. By fitting
this alcohol sensor into the car, we can save guard the life of the driver and also the remaining
passengers. It is very simple application. The life time of the project is high. It has low or zero
maintenance cost and of course low power consumption. This is a developed design to
efficiently check drunken driving. By implementing this design a safe car journey is possible
decreasing the accident rate due to drinking. By implementing this design, drunken drivers can
be controlled so are the accidents due to drunken driving. Government must enforce laws to
install such circuit in every car and must regulate all car companies to preinstall such
mechanisms while manufacturing the car itself. If this is achieved the deaths due to drunken
drivers can be brought to minimum level. In this type of system, future scope can be safely
landing of car aside without disturbing other vehicles.
