Newton (2018)

1-4 Players Designer: Simone Luciani, Nestore Mangone


Duration: 6 rounds of 2 phases each. 90 minutes
Board Setup
• Randomly put all City tiles , University tiles , and Ancient Lands tiles face-up on matching spaces
on Map board
• Shuffle Specialization Tiles and randomly place 5 on Track board spaces
• Shuffle Objective tiles and randomly place 6 on Map and Track board spaces – rest in box
• Shuffle Bonus tokens and randomly place on Map and Track board spaces. For 1p/2p/3p games only
place on spaces marked for # of actual players
• Shuffle Invention tiles and randomly place 5 face-up on Tracks board spaces – rest in box
• Sort Income tiles by type and place face-up on Tracks board spaces [lower-left]
• Place Medicine Income tiles on their Map space [upper-right] with 1 VP face-up
• Put coins and potions in piles – considered unlimited
• Sort Action cards by level symbol on back, shuffle each of the 3 decks and place face-down on table.
Draw 3 cards from each and place face-up next to decks to form 3 rows [1p: draw 2 only]
• Sort Development tiles by type and place face-up on Tracks board spaces [lower-right]
Player Setup
• Each player chooses a color
o Take a Study board and 12 Bookshelf tiles – place in 4 stacks of 3 on Study board
o Take 12 Travel cubes of your color and put 1 in each of the Study board spaces
o Take 6 Starting Action cards of your color
o Take the Scientist of your color and place on Map starting space of Basel
o Take 4 Students , place 1 in start space of Technology Track & other 3 by Study board
o Take 2 Markers , place 1 in start space of Work Track & 1 on Map board in VP track space ‘0’
o Take 1 Summary tile and 2 Coins and place by Study board
• Pick start player and give them First Player token
• Shuffle Master cards and deal 4 to each player – rest in box [option: keep 1 & pass left to draft]
End Game & Scoring
• The game ends after the 6th end round phase [use Action cards under board as timer]
• +VP for Objective spaces occupied by any piece of player’s color
• +VP for Master cards played as shown on card
• Most VP wins. Tie: no tiebreaker

Game Play
Action Phase
Start player begins, clockwise, play 1 Action card from hand onto desk into 1st available slot [left-to-right] and
optionally perform any # of Quick actions. In any order, perform card Basic Action & apply Special Effect [if
present]. Can opt not to perform either. Action value = # symbols on desk plus any Master Cards played, can
perform at lower value if you wish
Work: move marker on Work Track and get coins from supply = # value of action [or less]. Take
special effect of space where marker ended. To move onto Objective at end, must meet
requirement shown
Technology: move 1 of your Students on Technology Track = # value of action [or less]. Cannot
go back on path. Cannot split move between multiple students. When passing over Bonus token,
take it & apply effect. Take special effect of space where Student ended. To move onto
Objective at end, must meet requirement shown. Can’t be > 1 Student of same color on last
space of a path, but no limit to # of Students that can occupy same space along path
Travel: move Scientist on map = # value of action [or less]. Must 1st pay coins along route to be
taken. When passing over Bonus token, take effect. If Scientist ends on City, University, Ancient
Land, Objective, or Master space, take a Travel cube from Study board [top-to-bottom, right-to-
left] and place on that space. Get 1/2/4/8 VP for taking cubes 9/10/11/12. Can’t be > 1 Travel
cubes of each color in same space, but no limit on # Scientists in same space on Map. To Scientist
move onto Objective at end, must meet requirement shown
Lessons: take 1 available Action card value = # value of action [or less] into hand. Don’t replace.
Value of card = # Lesson symbols on back. Need cards in hand to perform Basic actions
Study: put 1 Bookshelf tile on Study board shelf space = value of action [or less]. Must meet
requirement of space shown on desk. Take book tiles from top to botton from desk. When
all books from stack taken, get immediate bonus shown
Joker: can be used to perform 1 basic action of choice, adding joker to symbols of action taken.
After the initial action, the Joker has no value
Requirements, Quick Actions
• If you land on specialization tile space , take matching tile and add to desk in assigned space
• To place Book tiles and activate Objective tiles, you must meet requirements on space. To meet University
or Ancient Lands, you must have cube on space. Book volume requirements must be on desk or Master
cards. Can spend 1 potion token in place of 1 volume , multiple times if needed. Can spend 3 potions in
place of 1 University or Ancient Land requirement
• On your turn at any time, can perform quick actions:
o spend 1 coin to turn over 2 Action cards from any deck
o spend 2 coins [1x per turn] to increase value of basic action by 1
o spend 3 coins to buy 1 potion token
o spend 5 coins to place a Student from supply on start of Technology track
End Round Phase
• After all players have taken 5 turns, slide 1 played card under desk with symbol showing [not Joker]
• Return remaining cards to hand
• Receive income from completed rows/columns on Bookshelf and from income tile row [on bottom]
• Return remaining face-up Action cards to bottom of deck. Draw 3 new cards from each
• Pass 1st player token clockwise & start new round
