Testing Procedure For Potential Transormer: Prepared by

This document outlines testing procedures for potential transformers at a site. It lists required equipment like a galvanometer, variac, and multimeter. It describes performing an insulation resistance test between the low voltage and high voltage terminals, a polarity test to check the voltage induced in the secondary, a ratio test applying a known primary voltage to check the rating, measuring the winding resistance, and checking the phase sequence in the secondary. The tests are to verify results against factory reports.

TESTING PROCEDURE FOR POTENTIAL TRANSORMER

1.0 AIM: The purpose of this document is to explain the brief procedure for testing the potentiel
Transformer at site.

2.0 TESTING EQUIPMENTS REQUIRED :

2.1. Galvanometer
2.2. Single Phase Variac
2.3. Step up Transformer
2.4. Multi meter
2.5. Phase sequence indicator.
2.6. Insulation Tester

3.0 TESTING OF POTENTIAL TRANSFORMER :

3.1 INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST:
Checking the insulation resistance value by using megger between
.LV Sw/gr HV/EHV Sw/gr.
3.1.1 Primary to Earth, 500 V 2.5 /5 KV
3.1.2 Primary to Secondary, 500 V 2.5 /5 KV
3.1.3 Secondary to Earth 500 V 500 V
3.1.4 Between Secondary cores 500 V 500 V

3.2 POLARITY TEST:

The Check is made by connecting a battery having per terminated polarity, for short transformer primary
terminal P1 and earth P2.The polarity of the voltage induced in the secondary is checked with the
galvanometer (or ) directly sensitive volt meter. This test is similar to the polarity test of CT”S (i.e ) by
checking the polarity of the pointer is the secondary connected galvanometer when the switch is operated in
the primary side.

3.3 RATIO TEST:

PT Ratio can be checked by directly applying some known value of voltages the primary side of the PT “S
and measure voltage between the terminal 1a and 1n.The available ratio should be equal to the ratio given by
the manufacturing name plate.

3.4 WINDING RESISTANCE :

Winding resistance can be checked by using multi meter, in secondary side winding between terminal 1a
and 1n.

3.5 PHASE SEQUENCE:

Phase sequence of secondary side can be checked by using phase sequence indicator.

4.0 REMARKS: Verify all test results with the factory test reports, wherever possible.
