STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Water is essential for both life and livelihood. It is required for consumption by humans,
plants, and animals alike, bringing with it essential micronutrients such as iron and fluoride.
Water is also required for personal hygiene such as washing, bathing, laundry, sewerage and
cleaning. Water is essential for agricultural and industrial production. While its availability in-
terms of quantity and quality determines the rate of a country’s growth and development, its
management level and control also determines whether it will constitute a blessing or curse.
Thus, the knowledge of managing and developing water as a resource, rather than hindrance, is
what prompted my interest in the science of hydrology.
As part of my undergraduate training, I had opportunities of participating in field and
laboratory works, using techniques such as GIS and Remote Sensing. I also gained excellent
practical, analytical and theoretical skills through statistics, research, report writing etc.
The choice of King Abdulaziz University (KAU) is, in fact, not far-fetched. The Hydrology
and Water Resources Management master’s degree plan at KAU is well-structured for me to
obtain a broad overview of the subject matter while offering particular suitability that caters for
diverse backgrounds and interests of students. The Hydrology Department has an outstanding
staff strength and strong research team. The department also prides herself of several state-of-
the-art facilities available for teaching, learning, and research. Besides, the opportunity of
making important connections within the vast and vibrant international graduate students’
community staged by the university proves invaluable. All these create suitable and supportive
teaching and learning environment that will expose me to a well-rounded preparation for a
successful future career. I therefore strongly believe that the skills and knowledge which KAU
would have imparted in me after this master’s programme will put me on a sound footing in
becoming one of the leading scholars in my area of specialization through to, and beyond PhD,
and in advancing frontiers of knowledge through policies which are relevant to local and global
development. The best decision for me, thus, is to enroll for the Master of Science in Hydrology
and Water Resources Management at KAU. Thank you.
