1.0 SCOPE

The scope is to cover the method required for the installation of earthing
.and lightning protection system

2.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of this procedure is to define the method of installation for

.earthing system for the above project

3.0 REFERENCE

The following are to be used as references for the installation of earthing &
lightning protection system

3.1 Approved Material Submittal

3.2 Project Specification (Division 16 ref:16744 & 16060)

3.3 Approved Shop Drawing

4.0 QUALITY CONTROL

Quality of installation at site shall be ensured by project team of Engineer’s,

.Supervisor and QA/QC

The supervisor shall supervise the installation work and the engineer’s shall
check and approve the installation according to specifications and approved
.shop drawing for installation of earthing and lightning protection

5.0 MATERIAL USED

Materials to be used shall be as per the approved material and should be

.inspected prior to use

6.0 STORAGE AND HANDLING

6.1 Materials must be stored in a dry place and they must be handled
carefully.

6.2 Materials must be protected from direct sun light by placing them in
sun shades.

7.0 TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

The following tools and equipment shall be used for installation of earthing
:system

7.1 Welding Machine

7.2 Hand tools

7.3 Testing Equipment: Earth Resistance Megger

8.0 SAFETY

8.1 Safety equipment like Hard hats, Safety shoes, Coveralls, Gloves
Goggles when necessary etc. to be worn at all times.

8.2 Ensure work area is clean and tidy.

8.3 Ensure adequate workface lighting is available.

9.0 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

9.1 Check approval of the material submittal. Confirm materials supplied

to site are as per contract requirements.

9.2 Install earthing and lightning protection system in full compliance

with the requirements of Local authorities, and project specification.

9.3 Check the complete earthing and lightning protection system is

electrically and mechanically continuous to provide an independent
fault current return path to the earthing source.

9.4 Check earthing terminal connectors and brazing equipment and

bolted connections carried out as per standards.

9.5 Check the impedance of equipment (earth loop) at any point in the
electrical wiring system, which has to be sufficiently low to limit the
voltage to earth and to facilitate the operation of the circuit protective
devices in the circuits.

9.6 Complete lightning protection rebar welded to the piles cap in

accordance with the piles layout. Location and approved shop
drawings.

9.7 Complete earthing pits buried under ground in accordance with the
project layout, location and drawings.

9.8 System earthing will be for non-current carrying metal part of the
electrical installation such items as cabinets, exposed metal parts
apparatus as well as enclosures, doors grilles, etc., protecting or
shielding electrical equipment from direct access to unauthorized
personnel.

9.9 All socket outlets, power apparatus, lighting fixtures, switches,

switchboards or panel boards, shells of all water heaters, etc., will be
earthed.

9.10 After completion of installation earthing resistance check to be done

as per regulation and required values.

9.11 Earthing System shall be installed as per project specification.

10.0 TESTING AND INSPECTION

10.1 On completion of the installation the following isolated and

combined measurement and / or checklists has to be made and
the results recorded in a lighting protection system checklist.

10.2 The resistance to earth of each local earth electrode and in

addition the resistance to earth of the complete earth termination
system.

10.3 Each local earth electrode has to be taken with the test point
between the down conductor and the earth electrode in the
disconnected position (isolated measurement)

10.4 A further measurement has to be taken with the test point in the
connected position (combined measurement).

10.5 The resistance of earth electrode will be checked with the

calibrated earth resistance tester for the value of less than 5
Ohms as per specification .If the resistance is nor achieved further
earth electrode will be driven to the ground untill achieving the
specified earth resistance .System include

10.6 The result of visual check of all conductors, bonds and joints and
their measured electrical continuity
