1 Description
1.1 General
The analog Repeater Compass, Type 133 -- 560, shows the heading determined by the gyro
compass in relation to “GEOGRAPHICAL NORTH”. The course is indicated by a 360° and a
10° card. It receives the heading signal in absolute and clear values from the gyro compass
via a serial interface (RM Course BUS* or NMEA 0183).
anti--glare shield
If the Repeater Compass is used with a gyro and magnetic compass there is no special
adjustment needed.
In any other cases the Repeater Compass has to be configurated (see section 3.3).
The table below describes all types of Repeater Compasses and enclosures:
The principles of operation and the interfaces of the different types are identical.
1.2 Construction
An anti--reflective polyester screen covers the cards on the front panel of the Repeater
Compass. The lubber line is inside the plate. LEDs illuminate the lubber line and the cards
in an area of ± 55°. In the lower area of the front plate on the right side (refer to Fig. 2) a
LED ligths up in three colors. Below the LED there are two multiple--function keys. On the
left side there is a digital display for the indication of the heading and error messages.

(Refer to Fig. 3)
The two cards are driven by a stepping motor each. The shaft of the stepping motor for the
10° card is arranged centrically in the shaft of the stepping motor for the 360° card. The
cards are directly mounted on the shafts of the stepping motors. The speed of the two step-
ping motors are in the ratio of 1:36. The 10° card is equipped with a graduation of 1/10° and
the 360° card with a graduation of 5°. Both cards are translucent and lit up around the lub-
ber line by LEDs.
Stepping motor
The Repeater Compass receives the heading information from the gyro compass or from
the magnetic compass by means of serial heading transmission with absolute and clear va-
lues. The serial transmission is realized via the RS 422 HEADING SERIAL* interface.
If it is intended to indicate data via an NMEA RS 422 or RS 232 interface, the Repeater
Compass recognizes this type of interface and changes automatically over to gyro / magne-
tic compass operation. Selecting the telegram type via a configuration is not necessary.
The serial course information is converted into steps on the steering repeater PCB for the
stepping motor in the ration of 1 : 36 and is shown by the 360° and the 10° card.
Various functions can be selected via two keys on the right side of the front panel:
NOTE!
The analog indications are adjusted by the manufacturer.
A correction of the analog indications is not needed in nor-
mal operation. The correction is required in the case of de-
synchronisation of the analog and digital display only.
For dimensions, weights and types of enclosures refer to the dimensional drawings in the
annex:
2.1 Indications
The serial course information is converted into steps on the steering repeater PCB for the
stepping motor in the ratio of 1 : 36. It is indicated by the 360° and the 10° card.
In addition to the analog heading indication by the cards, the Repeater Compass is also
equipped with a digital heading display on the left side of the front panel. This heading dis-
play cannot be desynchronized (refer to Fig. 2). The display alternates between the current
heading and the current heading sensor (”G_AL”, “G_M_”, “G_--_”, “M_--_”).
The digital display also reports any possible error or alarm by means of a preset display
code (refer to section 4.2.2). If the Repeater Compass is used as a steering compass the
optical alarm is supported by a buzzer.
A LED on the right side of the front panel signalizes the status or alarm of the Repeater
Compass and of the telegram:
Follow step by step the operating procedure shown in the corresponding sections.
If necessary, helpful information in short form has been added to the figurative representa-
tion (symbols).

When the supply voltage is switched on, the Repeater Compass is put into operation. After
switching on the Repeater Compass an automatical synchronisation follows.
The current heading is shown by the analog and digital indications.
The digital display alternates between the current heading indication and the current type of
the heading sensor every 30 seconds. The heading sensor is indicated by a flashing display
for approx. 5 seconds.
If the Repeater Compass is switched on and there is no interface connected, the messages
below are indicated:

-- The cards adjust to 0°
-- The display indicates “ “
Optional:
Audible alarm signal (buzzer)
-- confirm by operating the left or right key
(Only if the Repeater Compass is used as steering repeater.)
During the heating stage of the supplied gyro compass (up to approx. 0,5 h after putting the
compass into operation) there is no indication of the heading at the Repeater Compass.
After the heating stage has ended, the settling phase of the gyro compass starts.
During this settling phase the indicated heading of the Repeater Compass and of the gyro
compass is active. But only when the settling phase has ended (after approx. 3 h) the
heading indication can be used for navigation.
If the Repeater Compass is used with a Raytheon GPS compass the heading indication is
available after the alignment stage (approx. 10 to 15 minutes).
If the connection between the GPS compass and the corresponding satellite is disturbed, no
heading indication is available.
Approx. 10 to 15 minutes after establishing the connection to the satellites the current
heading is indicated again.
During normal operation the heading is indicated by the display and the cards.
In addition to the heading value on the digital display every 30 seconds, the current type of the
heading sensor is indicated on the display. During this time the display flashes for approx. 5 se-
conds.

Caution!
By all means adjust the
cards to zero of the display
indication. Otherwise the
analog indication does not
correspondent to the digital
indication.
NOTE!
All possible error indications, their causes and required
measures are described in detail in section 4.2.2.
Effect: The heading indication on the digital display does not correspond to the
heading of the ship.
Measures: Check connections, or call Raytheon Marine service.
Types of errors:
“-- -- --.--” :
-- Serial interface defective or
-- transmitted telegram invalid or
-- input signal disturbed or
-- configuration not according to the current telegrams or
or: operation mode (operator fault)
“Con” :
-- No data transmitted or
-- serial interface is not connected.
In the service mode the current adjustments, the configuration and the software version of
the Repeater Compass can be read--out. In this mode the adjustments cannot be changed
(refer to section 3.3).
After operating no key for approx. 5 seconds the Repeater Compass changes to normal
operation mode automatically. In the normal operation mode the heading is indicated in the
display. Every 30 seconds the display shows the heading sensor in rotation.

WARNING!
Before establishing the cable connection the supply
voltage must be switched off. Ensure that the supply
voltage cannot be switched on during installation.
CAUTION!
Do not open the Repeater Compass when mounting it
or during the normal operation.
The series of repeaters type “133--560 NG...” are assembled in different enclosures for:
-- desk--flush mounting
-- bulkhead mounting
-- wall mounting
-- The cards, the operating and indicating elements should be well accessible.
-- Protect the cards against solar radiation.
-- Ensure the type of enclosure.
-- The Repeater Compass should not be installed in oil--containing ambient air.
-- For dimensions and drillings see dimensional drawings in the annex.
-- Ensure enough mounting space for the cable entry.
-- The Repeater Compass should be mounted seaworthy.
The supply cable of the Repeater Compass that has to be connected to the ships mains and the
heading interface is already connected to the terminal strip inside the repeater. It is fixed in the
cable entry of the repeaters casing.
