Namagunga Primary Boarding School: Primary Six Holiday Work 2021 English

This passage describes the story of a farmer named Yoachel from Nebi town. He started by rearing animals and used the profits to open a carpentry workshop and hardware shop. Over time, he was able to buy buses and eventually owned twenty buses, earning 25 million shillings daily. Though wealthy, Yoachel remained humble. When shopping for clothes in an expensive boutique, an attendant refused to tell him prices, assuming he was too poor. Angered, Yoachel purchased 10 dresses and 10 pairs of trousers from another shop to prove to the first attendant that one cannot judge based on appearances.

SECTION B:
51. Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions about it.
Each person’s job is very important because he or she earns a living out of it.
Once in Nebi town, there was a farmer called Yoachel. He used to rear animals
such as cattle, sheep and goats. With the money he got from keeping the
animals, he opened a carpentry workshop and hardware shop. Time reached
when he bought a bus. He named the bus Ngacan meaning “a pauper”.

The first bus Yoachel bought together with the other businesses enabled him
to buy other buses till they became twenty. Yoachel started earning twenty
five million shillings every day.

Much as Yoachel was very rich, he did not show off. He remained a simple
man and wherever he went, he was treated as a very poor person. One time,
he travelled to Kampala and went to one of the most expensive boutiques. The
woman who was selling the clothes told him, “These clothes are so expensive
that you cannot afford them. Just move to the next shops and bargain on the
cheap ones there.”

Yoachel pleaded to the woman to tell him the price but she refused saying,
“These clothes are for people above your class, sir.” Yoachel went away very
angry. He went to another boutique which also sold clothes very expensively.

4
When he asked for the prices, the attendant humbly told him that each dress
was being sold at three hundred fifty thousand shillings whereas the trousers
were five hundred fifty thousand shilling each.

With the annoyance Yoachel had, he bought ten dresses and ten pairs of
trousers. He then directed the shopkeeper to take the clothes to the other first
boutique where he had been humiliated and minimised. He did this to show
the boutique attendant that it is wrong to judge people by their appearance.
Yoachel followed up and told the drapers, “I have bought these ten dresses and
pairs of trousers for you and your husband respectively because you thought I
was poor. In fact I own twenty buses but I can look for your boss and make
you lose your job anytime.”

Since that experience, the draper does not minimise any customer. She even
vowed to treat all customers equally.
