Alexandria University Faculty of Engineering Chemical Engineering Depertment First Year November 2016 CH 111 Time Allowed: 60 Minutes

This document appears to be an exam for a chemical engineering course covering various topics in programmed calculations. It contains 10 multi-part questions testing students' knowledge of: 1) converting between units like horsepower and British thermal units per second, 2) forces, masses, and weights under different gravitational conditions, 3) calculating mean, variance, and standard deviation from sample data, 4) determining equation units, 5) plotting linear relationships for various functions, and 6) determining appropriate plot types to visualize different relationships between variables as straight lines.

Answer all questions
Question (1)
What is the factors (numerical values and units) needed to convert
a. Horsepower to British thermal Units per second?
What is the derived SI unit for velocity? The velocity unit in CGS system? In the
American engineering system?

1. What is the force of 2 Kg.m/S2 equivalent to in newtons? What is the a

force of 2 lbmft/S2 equivalent to in lbf?
2. If the acceleration of gravity at a point is g = 9.8 m/s 2 and an object is
resting on the ground at this point, is the object accelerating at a rate of
9.8 m/s2?
3. Suppose an object weights 9.8 N at sea level. What is its mass? Would its
mass be greater, less, or the same on the moon? How about its weight?
4. Suppose an object weights 2 lbf at sea level. What is its mass? Would its
mass be greater, less, or the same on the moon? How about its weight?

The volumetric flow rate of process fluid, V̇ (Cm3/s), is measured five times, with
the following results:
Measuremen 1 2 3 4 5
t
V̇ (Cm3/s) 232 248 227 241 239
a. Calculate the sample mean, range of variance, and sample deviation.
b. There is high probability that measured value of V̇ will fall within two
standard deviations of the mean. Report the value of V̇ in the form of V̇
=a±b choosing the values of a and b to define this range.
c. Write .m file to perform parts (a) and (b).

If y(m/s2)=az(m3), what are the units of a?

If z(lbf)= a sin(Q), what are the units of a and Q?

How would you plot (x,y) data to get straight line, and how would you determine
a and b for each of the following functions?
a. y = a √ x+b
b. 1/y = a(x-3)2+b
c. y=aebx
d. y = (ax2-b)1/3
e. sin (y) = x (ax+b)-2
Examiner: Dr. Moustapha Salem 1
f. y=axb

the following plots yield straight lines. What are the equations that relate the
variables?
a. P versus t on rectangular coordinates
b. P (logarithmic axis) versus t on semilog plot
c. P versus t on a log plot
d. y2 – 3 (logarithmic axis) versus 1/x2 on semilog plot (express the answer as
an exponential function)
e. 1/F versus t2-4 on a plot log (express the answer as a power law)

What you plot against what on what kind of axes to get a straight line for the
following relation ships (a and b are constants)
a. P = a expbt
b. P2 = exp(at3+b)
c. P=atb
d. 1/P = a(t-4)-b
e.
