The Good Ones Chapter 5

This chapter summarizes the findings, conclusions, and recommendations from a study about teachers' perceptions of new normal education in selected private and public high schools in Camarines Norte, Philippines. The study found that while teachers had differing views, most saw challenges from learning modalities used in new normal education and believed it negatively impacted students' academic performance. Based on these findings, the researchers developed "Estilo ni Juan," or New Learning Styles for Every Filipino, to address issues brought by the pandemic and provide better education. The conclusions were that most teachers were female and had years of experience, giving them perspective to compare new normal education to previous teaching experiences.

Chapter 5

Summary, Findings, Conclusions, and Recommendations

This chapter presents the summary of findings, the conclusions drawn and the

recommendations set by the researchers based on the findings of the study.

Summary

The study is entitled as, New Normal Education: Teachers’ Perceptions on

Selected Private and Public High Schools in Camarines Norte. Its purpose was to

determine the perception of the teachers in the new normal education in selected private

and public high schools in Camarines Norte. The study was guided through the statement

of the problem: What is the profile of the participants in terms of their age, sex, type of

school (Private or Public), Civil Status, Number of years of teaching; What are the

perceptions of teachers with regards to the new normal education in terms of the learning

modality and student’s academic performance; Lastly, based on the findings, what

information dissemination may be formulated based from the perceptions given by

teachers regarding the new normal education?

The study looked for participants’ perceptions about the new normal education.

This study was limited to its investigation both male and female with no particular age

who were working as a private or public high school teacher. Specifically, it is the

teachers inside the province of Camarines Norte. The researchers conducted a virtual

interview and other action strategies to get the insights of respondents about the new

normal education in the province. This study focused on the perceptions of public

teachers from Alawihao National High school (ANHS), Vicente L. Basit Memorial High
School (VLBMHS), Larap National High School (LNHS), Vinzons Pilot High School

(VPHS), Camarines Norte National High School (CNNHS), and Moreno Integrated

School (MIS) and private teachers from Chung Hua High School (CHHS), Our lady of

Lourdes College Foundation (OLLCF), Capalonga Parochial School (CPS), Northills

College of Asia (NCA), and Mabini Colleges Inc. (MC) to the new normal education in

the province of Camarines Norte. Also, it provides significance to each and every

individual/sector that will be involved with it.

The study is supported by various literature and studies that are related to the

topic. The study also aimed to bridge the gap that is needed for a better understanding

about the perceptions of selected private and public high school teachers inside the

province regarding to New Normal Education. The study also showed supporting theory

and its concept that served as the foundation of the whole study and the expected output

of it.

It is a descriptive qualitative design of research that is presented in a narrative

form. The type of sampling used is purposive sampling. While, the participants involved

in this research study are the teachers. Specifically, the teachers working on private and

public high schools in the province of Camarines Norte without any age requirements.

The teachers that are interviewed in the study consist of eleven (11) teachers six (6)

teachers from public high school and five (5) teachers from private high school. The

researchers looked for high school teachers who are currently teaching in private or

public high schools inside the province who are capable in answering the unstructured

questionaries about their perceptions in the new normal education created by the

researchers. These teachers or respondents were virtually interviewed through the use of

180
google meet/ zoom/ video call in connection to the purpose of the study. The data

collection of this study administered through the use of primary and secondary sources.

The study used thematic coding for the process of analysis of data that is performed in

findings in this chapter.

The study was conducted in January of 2021. The researchers interviewed the

eleven (11) respondents in February 8 up to 19 of 2021 that were presented in chapter 4

of the study. The output was also presented. The output which is the “Estilo ni Juan”

which means New Learning Styles for every Filipinos aimed to provide a permanent

solution to the problems brought by the emergence of the pandemic in the field of

education resulting to low academic performance of the students and the difficulties that

the teachers are experiencing. While, the findings, conclusions, and recommendations are

presented in this chapter of the study.

Findings

Based from the data gathered, the following findings were revealed.

The profile of the participants based on the data gathered was, the eleven (11) key

informants of the study consisted of four (4) males and seven (7) females whose ages

ranged from 22-54 years old. Six (6) of them are from public high schools and five (5) of

them are from private high schools inside the province. In terms of their number of years

of teaching, four (4) of them have been teaching for two (2) years and the remaining have

been teaching for four (4) years, eighth (8) years, ten (10) years, twenty-seven (27) years,

twenty-eighth (28) years, thirty (30) years, and thirty-four (34) years. As to their civil

statuses, seven (7) of them are Single and four (4) of them are Married.

181
The perceptions of the teachers with regards to the new normal education is

different from each other in different ways but in terms of the learning modalities, they

perceived it as the primary reason for them to experience different problems, barriers, and

conflicts with their job as a teacher and to their personal lives. There was a key informant

cited that he is having difficulty in separating his personal life to his job wherein, unlike

before he can tell that home is where you can rest but with the modalities available under

the new normal education, he cannot do it anymore. In addition, as teachers, they find

new normal education in terms of the learning modalities as a result of force wherein,

everything is caused by force which is not a good idea in a student’s learning. Also, with

it, they are forced to do such things that are not included on their job descriptions where

they have to work twenty-four-seven and prepare a lot of things everyday which is totally

different from the modalities they are used to. And they also emphasized that the learning

modalities available under the new normal education is not that much effective because

as teachers they can see and notice what is really happening and they can tell that it is not

effective compared before. In addition, most of them mentioned that this caused them to

experience difficulties in assessing their students. But among these negative perceptions

regarding to the new normal education in terms of the learning modalities, there was a

key informant that emphasized his positive perception about it wherein, it opens an

opportunity for him to develop his patience and develop the skills of the students in

technical side. While in terms of the student’s academic performance, most of them can

tell that new normal education caused a big change in terms of the student’s academic

performance/status. A key informant perceived new normal education as the primary

reason for her student to fall off wherein, she cited that she has a student who was an

182
honor student before but when the new normal education emerged, the student she is

referring to had a low academic performance which is not a good result. Most of them

believed that this new normal education negatively affects their student academic

performance due to different reasons such as inaccessibility to such things that are needed

for them to get a quality education, their capabilities, and the learning modalities

available.

Based on the findings from the perceptions given by the teachers regarding the

new normal education, the researchers formulated different new learning styles that will

make an action with regards to the problems and issues brought by the emergence of

pandemic under the new normal education. This is called “Estilo ni Juan” which means

New Learning Styles for Every Filipinos. This “Estilo ni Juan” will provide a permanent

solution to the problems brought by the emergence of the pandemic in the field of

education resulting to low academic performance of the students and the difficulties that

the teachers are experiencing. This output consists of five (5) different new learning

styles and each of them has its own use, purpose, and concept that is making them unique

and useful compared to others.

Conclusions

Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn.

Most of the teachers (respondents) were female whose age ranges from twenty-

three (23) to fifty-four (54) years old and some of them are working as a teacher for years

and decades. To analyze such data, it was an undeniable fact that most of the teachers

here in the Philippines are female and there is only a small percentage of male teachers

183
compared to females. Also, it is because females are known for having a soft heart and

affection for kids/students and they are more capable of handling different kind of

students/kids because it is within them that is why, the study's participants tended to have

a higher proportion of females than males.

Upon reviewing the findings based from the conducted interview, the researchers

concluded that most of the teachers who are the participants have already been teaching

for years and decades wherein, they already experienced different scenarios underlying

the field of education that is pushing them to have different positive and negative

perceptions regarding New Normal Education.

The findings of the conducted interview showed that among the teachers teaching

in the New Normal Education, those teachers who are under the private

institutions/schools in the province are the most affected ones and experiencing

difficulties, conflicts, and stress compared to the teachers who are working under a public

high school. It does not mean that public high school teachers are not experiencing such

problems but based on the result of the interview it was revealed that they are the most

affected individuals. Because since they are private schools, most of them offers different

modalities such as online class, modular distance learning, and radio-based instructions

unlike in public high schools most of them only offers one modality and they have

sufficient number of teachers and in terms of the preparation, they have to prepare such

things everyday. There was an informant that emphasized that aside from preparing video

presentations/power point presentation and discussing everyday, they also have to create

modules for the students who are enrolled to modular distance learning and they have to

check it one by one. Also, since they are private high school teachers, the sense of time-

184
pressure is within them causing stress, anxiety, and frustrations. Due to the different

barriers these private high school teachers encounter, it makes them considered as the

most affected ones and experiencing a lot of problems and stress compared to public high

school teachers.

These findings also revealed that the modalities they are utilizing such as blended

learning, pure online class, and pure modular distance learning is not effective in terms of

the students learning. Because based on the conducted interview, there are different

barriers that occur that become hindrances for an effective learning such as the

willingness of the students to learn, capabilities, technicalities, and a lot more which

needs a concrete action.

Based from the findings, the output which is the “Estilo ni Juan” that the

researchers formulated is a good way/action to aid such problems brought by the

pandemic under the new normal education. This will permanently aid the problems

regarding to the low academic performance of the students and the teacher’s life. Because

the learning of an individual starts on how he/she learns, having a proper learning

style/strategy that the students and the teachers can use will make a change.

Recommendations

The following are the researchers' recommendations after a detailed review of the

findings.

This study wants to recommend to the following:

1. Teachers should know and always remember that every student has their own

preferred learning style wherein, it is a big factor on their learning process. It is

185
because some teachers perceive a student as a slow learner but the thing is, they

just do not know the preferred learning style of the student for him/her to perform

well in school. The teachers should observe and adjust to be able to know the

preferred learning style of each and every student to execute an effective learning

because the learning of an individual starts on how he/she learns the lesson. Using

the students’ preferred learning style in their learning process will make a change

and make their academic performances better and no students will be left behind

and misperceived. Also, the study recommends the continuous use of the output in

the learning process of their students to utilize an effective learning.

2. The students itself should learn how to explore by knowing how they can learn a

lesson. Thus, they will be able to perform well in school because they already

found out the perfect learning style/method suited for them. Also, student’s

mentality matters wherein, having a positive perspective in terms of education

will make a change and will boost their eagerness to learn. In addition, excluding

the sense of pressure in their learning process will make them more comfortable

in studying resulting to their good academic performance.

3. Parents and Guardian should establish a mindset to their children that education is

indeed difficult where it needs patience and courage. By establishing this mindset,

it will develop a positive outlook in education to their children making them

realize that the difficulties they are experiencing is part of it and it will lessen the

chance for them to easily give up on their studies. In addition, internal support is

an important factor that is why as much as possible the parents/guardian should

186
give time to their children and do not stop guiding them because it will make

sense on their learning.

4. The Department of Education can make and be open for some adjustments

regarding to the programs they provided under the New Normal Education where

no one will experience such problems physically, mentally, and financially either

the teachers or the students. Because the situation of these two matters to the

implementation of an effective learning. If the teachers are always experiencing

problems in their teaching process it will be a hindrance to an effective learning as

well as to the students, if they are always experiencing difficulties on their

learning process, they will have a low academic performance. Therefore, being

more sensible to the individuals under the department will make a good outcome.

Lastly, a continuous research on how to utilize an effective learning should be

done by the department because the world is continuously changing as well as the

type of education we have, especially we are still under a pandemic. With this

continuous research, the day will come that they will discover things that can be

done to still improve the quality of education that the country has because

education needs a continuous improvement.

5. The Government can make different programs/plans that will promote “stress-

free” life for teachers as well as to the students especially in this time of

pandemic. It is because most of the teachers teaching under this new normal

education caused by the pandemic are experiencing different problems within

their personal lives as well as their life as a teacher and scarcity on financial

matters and care for themselves. While on the side of the students, this pandemic

187
caused a lot of adjustments and they need a prior support from the government. If

the teachers are happy within their situation, they can be the best teacher on their

own.

6. The Non-Government Organizations (NGO’s) can make a partnership to the

Government organization or be an independent organization in creating, making,

and innovating different advocacies/programs/plans that will promote a “stress-

free” life and support for the teachers as well as to the students because their

situation matters especially in this time of pandemic.

7. The study showed the perceptions of teachers regarding to New Normal

Education wherein, there are various problems revealed from their perceptions

and this study provided an action which is the new learning styles that will aid the

problems brought by the new normal education to the student’s academic

performances and the life of teachers. Thus, the study wants to recommend to the

further studies to continue its concept by making a study about the effects of these

new learning style from the latter study to the students’ academic performances as

well as to the teachers. With this, it will open an opportunity for improvements

and everyone will have more understanding about it. Moreover, the further studies

can also modify its concept where they will not only focus to the perception of

teacher regarding to education/teachers’ life instead they will also focus to their

personal lives as a teacher. From that point, these two factors will be the main

topic of their perception. Thus, the further studies can provide a clear

understanding about the connection of their personal lives to their perception

when it comes to education or life as a teacher. With this, it will still showcase the

188
side of the teachers because it is a fact that their views and perceptions are still

being left behind.

Key Informant No. 1

Age: 22 years old Sex: Male Type of School: Private

Civil Status: Single Number of years of teaching: 2 years

Researcher: What grade you currently teach? (Sa anong baitang ka kasalukuyang

nagtuturo?)

Informant: Okay right now, I’m currently teaching grade 11 in senior high and grade 12.

In junior high, I am currently teaching grade 7 students.

Researcher: Have you always taught at this level? (Palagi ka bang nagtuturo sa baitang

na ito?)

Informant: Yes, I’ve been teaching grade 7,11, and 12 since I started teaching here. Opo

yun po yung palagi kong tinuturuan. (Yes, those are the grade levels I always teach.)

Researcher: How long have you been teaching? (Ilang taon ka nang nagtuturo?)

Informant: I’ve been teaching for ahm more than 2 years already.

Researcher: I’d like you to think back over the first day of school in the school year

2020-2021 and analyze the situations that you encountered. (It could be positive or

negative.

200
2021at suriin ang mga sitwasyong iyong nakita noon. Ito ay maaaring maging positibo o

negatibo.)

Informant: Okay so, for your first question, as I look back from the first day school year

2020-2021 where of course, the pandemic has been emerging during those times, as I’ve

noticed there we’re a lot of changes happened since the emergence of pandemic. As a

teacher of course, and my institution as well, we follow the department of education. As

we all know the department of education has planned to continue the education or ano po

your education despite the pandemic through their learning continuity plan amidst

COVID-19. So, that is their plan wherein, education should be continued despite this

pandemic. So, we should adhere as an institution or private institution to that that. And of

course, as a teacher, of our institution, we should also adopt to the learning modality to be

applied or expected to be applied by the department of education throughout the province

as well as throughout the province. So those modalities, doon yung mga nakita kong

changes. (So, those are the changes I’ve noticed in terms of modalities.) Now, I can state

at least five changes happened or happening since the emergence of pandemic with

regard to education- to teaching styles and modalities. First is of course the addition of

modalities. Nagkaroon tayo ng tatlong modalities diba? (We had three new modalities

right?) Aside from… before we use face-to-face right? This one is the usual mode that

we use of course face-to-face ahm classroom or physical learning however, as the

continuity plan states we have given the opportunity to choose between three modalities

which are the modular, the second one is called online distance learning and we do also

have the radio or television radio instruction I mean based instructions- radio based

instructions. So, all of these three are applied in our institution those three modalities that

201
I’ve mentioned are being utilized here in our institution ahm every Saturday if I’m not

mistaken radio instruction is being used but most of the three or most of the time, we

usually use the modular distance learning and of course the online class learning and that

is the modality you are experiencing right now, right? The online and the modular. The

changes here, the advantage of it is that you were able to choose between modular and

online. The advantage of it to the students, kapag ang usapan ay yung adavantage, he/she

is able to choose what or which modality he/she is comfortable with or gusto nya ano po.

(The advantage of it to the students, if we are talking about its advantage, he/she is able

to choose what/which modality he/she is comfortable with or like to be enrolled, right?)

So pwede syang makapili so despite the pandemic makakatuloy syang mag-aral pwede

syang mag modular or online. (So, the student can choose despite the pandemic he/she

can still continue studying because the student can choose between modular and online.)

So, this is the positive aspect of the changes. However, ayan na naman tayo sa however,

(However, here we go

again- however (laugh), it still has more negative results than positive, right?) Idagdag

ay is that mas marami tayong matututunan because maraming choices. (In addition to the

positive side of additional modalities, aside from having choice to choose which modality

a student wanted to be enrolled, the positive infact (laugh) why did I say infact… are you

an “infacto”? (laugh). The positive impact of it is the students will learn more because

he/she can choose among the different modalities available.) Kung maraming choices of

learning, mas maraming matututunan in terms of learning sa part ninyo and sa part

202
naming as a teacher. (If a student have many choices for his/her learning, the student will

learn more.) However, sa reality that is ideal. (However, in reality it is ideal.) Ideal yun

pati yung plano I think it’s ideal. (The plan itself is ideal.) Sa reality mas maraming

negative side sya. (In reality, it is more on negative side.) Okay, for instance, you were or

we were forced to… syempre kasama ako alangan naman kayo lang ang nahihirapan

(laugh). (Okay, for instance, you were or we were forced… of course I still belong, it is

unethical if the students are only experiencing difficulties (laugh) of course we teachers

also experiencing that.) We were forced to join a sudden paradigm shift in education ano

po, wherein, from face-to-face na naturally alam na natin ang gagawin natin we were

forced to use the digital classroom instead the face-to-face learning with regards to the

health protocols as well. (We were forced to join a sudden paradigm shift in education,

right? Wherein, from face-to-face that is naturally we know what to do, we were forced

to use the digital classroom instead the face-to-face learning with regards to the health

protocols as well.) Na-force tayo na gumamit ng online classes as well as yung distance

finoforce is masama. (We are forced to utilize the online classes as well as the distance

learning and we are all forced to use gadgets, etc. wherein, for me everything that is

caused my force/mandatories is bad.) So, as a result, though there are errors in

preparation, example in administrative and in our teaching part there were modules that

have errors, in terms of the discussions they were not concisely created. Ewan ko parang

minadali alam nyo yun? (I don’t know but I think it is rushed? You know what I mean?)

And then the students they tend to… the negative side of additional modes we have, the

distance learning, they tend to just fall in just complying trap or copy paste trap or to be

203
submitted trap. They were just forced to submit only and then active learning is usually

ignored also the passive learning is not effectively applied. Those are the negative sides

of additional learning.

(Unlike before we see each other everyday, I was always able to

talk to you everyday about boys love (laugh), Christian loves BL (laugh) slao Divina

(laugh), I know that both of you are addicted watching those (laugh).) Pero dito ano, one

at a time lang tayo I mean isang beses per week lang tayo nakikita. (But currently, we

only meet virtually one at a time, I mean we only meet once a week.) Aside from that ang

nakita ko is classroom setting and management. (Aside from that, I think I aanswered a

lot knowing that we are still in number 1 (laugh) okay, the second changes I have noticed

is the classroom setting and management.)

because it’s online wala kayong katabi, the students were not able to kumbaga chitchat

with his/her classmates during my classes. (Okay, the positive side of it for us teachers

ahm… the pressure we are always feeling lessen when it comes to classroom

management because it’s online and the students don’t have any seatmates, the students

were not able to chitchat with his/her classmates during my classes.)

(You are only focused on the discussion because it is not possible if

204
you will talk with your computer and speaker, of course you don’t have any choice but to

listen and pay attention to the lesson.) Aside from that, ang positive side nya is sa

the gadgets itself, diba mahilig sa gadgets ang mga bata ngayon the gadget itself is the

motivation or motivating part na ng bata. (Aside from that, the positive side of it in the

classroom setting, we teachers are not obliged anymore to prepare everyday those lists

of strategies to get the attention and make the students listen because with the gadgets

itself, the children are fond of using gadgets, right? The gadgets itself is the motivation

or motivating part of the student.)

(Okay, while you are

teaching the students are focused thus, the teachers had a great time in teaching them

and that is the positive side of it on teachers.) Ang nagging negative side nya naman is

yung radiation. (In the other side, it causes radiation to its users.) Yun lang naman ang

negative side nya. (Those are the negative sides of it.) Aside from that, ang pangatlong

(Aside from that, the third change I’ve noticed

is in the aspect of financial.) They might look like mas nabawasan yung finance

(They

might look like the finance or expenses of the parents lessen because they don’t have to

spend more money for your allowances in school everyday.) However, mas nadagdagan

(However, the reality is the expenses increases

because of the internet connection, some are being forced to buy gadgets, load especially

205
for those students who are using only data connection.) So, mas costly sya for me hindi

sya talaga sya nakatipid sa tao kundi mas costly sya, mas nadagdagan yung ating

babayaran every month. (So for me, it is much expensive compared before because the

total amount of monthly bills increased.) Aside from that, a custom time and place.

(Aside from that, the custom time and place.) Which means we are a custom to classroom

setting ahm we always wanted to have classroom or a classroom where we should learn

and then we as a teacher that the school where we work at, currently, it is not a custom

time and place of us anymore. Nasa bahay tayo lahat. (All of us are inside our own

houses.)

teacher. (since all of us are staying at our own houses, it is the place where we study,

watch (laugh), while the teachers are answering all of the questions of the students 24/7,

it is unethical if we teachers don’t respond to their queries.) So, there were kumbaga

nagkaroon ng disturbance pagdating sa a custom time and place. (So, there were

disturbance occurred when it comes to a custom time and place.) Ang pang last naman

or pang lima is yung assessment ng mga teachers. (Lastly, the assessment of teachers.)

It’s really hard to asses you. For me it’s easy para sainyo kasi I’ve been teaching you

simula noong grade 11 pa kayo. (For me, it’s easy because I’ve been teaching you since

you were grade 11.) However, sa ibang students nahirapan kaming mag assess.

(However, in some students we are having this so-called difficulty in assessing them.)

Madali lang sa akin if kilala ko yung mga estudyante ko personally, sa ibang estudyante I

find it difficult to assess them. (It is easy for me I knew the student personally but to

another student that I don’t know personally, I find it difficult to assess them.) It’s

206
because I don’t know them personally. So, I think, the assessment part medyo negative sa

part na yun and we were also can fall sa trap na “ay sige bigyan ko na to ng 94” kahit di

naman talaga sya na asses ng maayos. (So, I think the assessment part has negative

results and we wre also can fall to the trap “it’s okay, I will be just giving this kid a

grade of 94” although he/she is not assessed properlyt.) To be honest, that is what

happening today during this online classes. So I think, those are the advantages and

disadvantages I’ve seen since the beginning of the school year. Researcher: What are the

effects of these changes on your usual teaching method utilize before?

pagtuturo noon?)

Informant: I’ve been teaching you since before wherein, we are still in the physical

classroom. So, I think, the usual teaching method I utilized are divided into three parts.

The exposition, inquisition and generation. Yung exposition and inquisition, dito palagi

ako nag-fafall during face-to-face. (The face-to face we all know falls under the

exposition and inquisition.). When we say exposition, it is commonly concerned with the

usual lectures and discussions. While, when we say inquisition, it is the usual Socratic

method, argumentative method, just like what I am doing to you before, I always ask you

guys. Diba 1st day palang non is may patanong agada ko so yun yung madalas kong

ginagamit. (As you remember although we are in our 1 st day I already have questions for

all of you, right?) Inquisition at exposition. It is the natural way of teaching we know, the

usual one, am I clear?) Ahm sometimes nagpapa-generation din ako. (Sometimes I use

generation.)

(In the generation part, this is the time that you will make your own output.) As I

207

balancing and one time nagpareport ako non parang ganon. (As I rememebered when you

are in grade 11, I asked you to make chemical balancing and one-time, I asked you to

make a report about out lesson, simply just like that.) So, those are types of generation-

because of time or siguro limited din sa time for preparation. (So, those are the types of

generation wherein, you guys are the one who will create an idea/output and to tell you, I

only given you not that much generations because of time I think, we have limited time to

prepare.) Ngayon, ang advantage nya sa online classes is that mas mahaba yung time ko

magplan for the generation process. (Now, the advantage of it in online classes, I have a

plenty of time to plan and prepare for the generation process. Kumbaga, mas maraming

generation part natin in terms of the teaching modality that I used. (In this time of

pandemic, we can give more generation part in our classes.) That is what generation is

and yun yung inaaply ko ngayon. (That is what geration is and that is the one I am using

especially we are in online class setting.) So yun yung malaking pagbabago e. (So, those

are the big changes brought by the new normal education.) Hindi na sya yung more on

ganon. (It is not the same with setting we have before.) Tingnan mo in 1-hour ico-consice

mo yung lesson for 1 week and after non kayo na ang gawa nang gawa. (Just look at it,

the lesson that is intended to be discussed for one week is concise for one hour only and

then, it is the time for you to answer all of the activities needed to be answered.) So more

on student based tayo ngayon or student output tayo ngayon. (So, we are more focused

on student based or student output/s.) So yun yung changes sa aking teaching method.

(So, those are the changes I experienced in terms of my teaching method.)

208
Researcher: What are the adjustments you made to cope up in the changes of teaching

style/methods in this school year?

Informant: Ay dami! (A lot!) Grabe! (Super!) Ang dami kong adjustments. (I did a lot of

adjustments.) Kasi baga usually noong pumapasok ka noong face-to-face before the

throughout the year. (Because as you know, usually before although I don’t bring any

books, once I start talking it will continue throughout the discussion time because all of

the things that I will be saying in front of class are already planned and I know what will

I do throughout the year.)

agad. (So, I only have one or two props it’s okay. Before, I only bring a periodic table or

electronegativity table, I can discuss and teach you the things that you will be needing

for the lesson.)

prepared kasi kailangan na nga naming i-consice yung discussion into 1 hour. (However,

with regards to online classes, it is a big no if you are not prepared since we have to

concise the discussion into one hour.) Paano mo gagawing 1hour yung dapat na

ididiscuss mo for 1week. (How could you able to discuss the lesson that is intended to be

discussed for one week in one hour only.) So dito sa online learning is di sya madaling i-

consice. (So, here in the online learning it is not easy to concise.) So nahihirapan ako

mag-adjust pagdating doon sa pagpapaliit sa kanila. (So, I had difficulties in adjusting

when it comes in making the long discussion to short one.) Pero thanks to the use of

209
digital gadgets saka yung powerpoint presentations kasi I was able to create powepoint

(But,

I’m thankful to the use of digital gadgets because I was able to create PowerPoint

presentations where I can able to concise all of the topics and I can organize it thus, the

presentation will not be too long or too short.) So naka organize na sya sa ppt

presentation. (So, all of the topics I will be discussing id organized in the ppt

presentation.) Therefore, malaking tulong din ang ppt presentation and for me malaking

(Therefore, having ppt

presentation is a big help for me because I only need a laptop and I don’t have to cut-out

for big periodic table for the students will be able to see the procedure, etc.) Ngayon

online ppt so, yung mga adjustments is more on technical side. (Currently I am using

online ppt so, the adjustments here is more on technical side.)

Researcher: Suppose this pandemic end and everything back to normal, what academic

modality would you use? (The traditional one which is the face-face or the system we

used under new normal education such as online class/modular) (Kung sakaling matapos

kinagawiang face-to-face o online class/modular?)

Informant: Okay so, supposed this pandemic end noh? (Okay, suppose this pandemic

end, right?)

modality. (Considering that we already used all of the modalities that could be possibly

use.) For me I think, it depends kasi I am a teacher and I should adhere or follow to what

210
my organization is planning, is saying, wants to implement or yung DepEd kung ano

yung gusto nilang gawin so therefore, I should follow with regard to what plan they want

to do or implement. (For me I think, it depends because I am a teacher and I should

adhere or follow to what my organization is planning, is saying, wants to implement or

the DepEd itself if what they want to do so therefore, I should follow with regard to what

plan they wanted to do or implement.) So, it depends upon siguro kung ano yung sa

research or kung ano yung lalabas sa research na applicable right after ng pandemic. (So,

it depends upon if what will be the result of researches that is applicable right after the

pandemic.) Kasi di naman pwedeng for example right after the pandemic okay na wala

(Because it is not applicable if right after the pandemic, okay there is no virus anymore

etc. is I am the only teacher who still utilizing online class, I don’t want face-to-face.)

(Everyone is

doing the face-to-face while I am the only one who is still practicing online class

(laugh).) At the same time naman, bawal pa pala ang face-to-face, tapos ako yung bida

bidang magdedemand ng face-to-face kahit bawal (laugh). (At the same time, if face-to-

face is still not allowed and I am the teacher who demands face-t0-face knowing that it is

still not allowed (laugh).)

so therefore, the situation is uncertain. (So, it is not a good idea if you will not go with the

flow of the situation so therefore, the situation is uncertain.) For me, it depends upon

what the situation suggests and wants to apply for us teachers and students kung gusto ay

face-to-face or online or kung gusto naman ay blended, okay rin. (For me, it depends

upon what the situation suggests and wants to apply for us teachers and students if they

211
wanted face-to-face or online or blended, it would be okay.) Siguro I think, after this

pandemic, is more on a blended type of learning. (I think, after this pandemic is more on

blended type of learning.) Okay meron yang online classes and face-to-face learning, I

think. (okay, it has online classes and face-to-face learning, I think so.) Pero it will not

be for sure a 100 percent face-to-face right after the President declared na wala na tayong

pandemic. (But it will not be for sure a 100 percent face-to-face right after the President

declared that the pandemic successfully ended.) Hindi agad yan face-to-face meron yan

gradual changes. (It will not be an instant face0-to-face because it will gradually

change.) Unlike noong nagkaroon ng pandemic agad-agad or sudden yung changes.

(Unlike before we had a pandemic resulting to sudden changes.) After ng pandemic I

think gradual na yung gagawing changes and mas papag-isipan nila katulad ngayon

tingnan mo ang nangyari sa atin. (After the pandemic I think it will gradually change and

they wil think deeper just like what happened in the present.) Active learning and passive

(Active and passive learning wherein,

the students are really learning.) I am a student as well sa masters ahm I think di talaga

am a student as well in Masters ahm… I think it is not really that effective because I feel

that it has no effect on me, as of now.) However, the thing is kailangan natin mag

continue. (However, the thing is we still have to continue.) So, whatever it is, face-to-

face, online, or physical learning it’s up to us. It depends upon the situation kung ano ang

iaapply natin after this pandemic. (It depends upon the situation if what steps could we

apply after this pandemic.)

212
Researcher: Do you think it is effective to combine these two educational modalities? If

yes, in what way it will be effective?

Bakit?)

Informant: Okay so, as I’ve said earlier, I believe na mas maganda or mas magiging

maganda ang result nyan after pandemic if it will be a combination of the face-to-face,

online or yung tinatawag natin na blended learning. (Okay so, as I’ve said earlier, I

believe that it will be a good idea if it will be a combination of the face-to-face, online or

what we call blended learning.) So, I think na mas pipiliin ko yung blended learning or

I’m after blended learning after this pandemic. (So, I would choose blended learning or

I’m after blended learning afdter this pandemic.) In what way it could be applied, siguro

yung blended learning kasi is face-to-face. (In what way it could be applied, I think

blended learning is face-to-face.) Of course, syempre ang ways para magka face-to-face

is utilizing the classroom na meron tayo sa institution natin. (Of course, the way for us to

have a face-to-face is utilizing the classrooms that our institution has.) So, I think hindi

(So

ithink, it will not instantly allow the students to use 100 percent of the classrooms.) First

aalamin muna yung parents consent kung gusto ba nila paaralin yung anak nila syempre

importante dito ang role ng parents natin. (First, the institution should know the opinion

of the parents if they will allow thei children to go to school of course, the role of parents

here is really important.) Pangalawa is of course, yung percentage ng laman na dapat na

maooccupy or dapat na mag-occupy sa isang classroom. (Second is the percentage of

individuals that will occupy and should occupy in one classroom.) So, di na yan magiging

kagaya ng dati na dikit-dikit lahat. (So, it will not be like before where everyone is sitting

213
close to each other’s.) (Maybe it will not go back to

the setting we are used.) Yung new normal natin is yun na talaga yung magiging normal

natin for the rest of our college. (The new normal we have will be the normal one for the

rest of our college.)

pandemic noon and tumagal sya ng 5years. (Because if we are looking back at the

history, we already had a pandemic and it lasts for 5 years.) So, I think maaapply sya

konti-konti yung face-to-face. (So, I think face-to-face will be applied little by little.)

(Those individuals who don’t want to go face-to-face are the one who will be chooing to

enroll in online classes.)

mamili kung saan sya mas safe and mas komportable. (The advantage of it is the student

has the freedom to choose if which system he/she wanted to be enrolled.)

(But I the side of teachers, they don’t Have any choices, but to be stressed

because you have to prepare 2 preparations everyday.)

(So, I am sure that

DepEd will make a system if who will be the teachers that will teach online and in face-

to-face. I think, maaapply at maapply yan. (I think, no matter what happens, it will be

applied.) Kailangan lang nila ng suporta. (They just need support.)

(Honestly, before I am not favor with the plan of

DepEd to continue education because they have to consider the health of everyone.)

(However,

214
when I experienced it, I realized that it could be.) It’s just ang dami lang natin complains.

(It’s just we have a lot of complains.) So kapag may mga ganyang situation, as a human

instinct dapat andoon lagi tayo sa positive. (If there is such situation, as a human instinct

we always have to go to the positive side of it.) Di naman tayo makakarating dito sa

modern world natin kung yung mga pinakauna nating mga ancestors is hindi sila nag risk

na mag create ng fire parang ganon. (We will not reach this modern world if our

ancestors did not risk to create a fire, something like that.) So, parang ganon ang idea

nya. (So, the idea of it is the same with it.)

Researcher: What do you think about the situation of your students right now? And what

do you think they are doing to cope with these sudden changes?

Informant: As I’ve experience and still observing sa mga students ko, I think, punta tayo

sa learning it’s not 100% easy. (As I’ve experience and still observing to my students, I

think… lets move to their learnings, I can say that it’s not 100 percent.) At least sa

classroom is may tinatawag tayo na passive learning kumbaga yung mga bata is natuto

(At least in

classroom we have that so called passive learning wherein the students learn although

there is no teacher in front of them because they can ask or talk with their classmates.)

Pag nasa classroom kasi sila, ang ganda ng aura nila ang nasa isip nila is this is a place

where to study parang ganon. (Because if they are inside the classroom, their auras are

different because think that this is a place where to study, like that.) However, dito sa

(However, here in

215
online, I think the students are experiencing confusion due to the situation.) Nagkaroon

tayo ng confusion. (We are experiencing confusion.) Actually, di talaga sya naguguluhan

kumbaga naisama sya lahat, wala syang division and naguluhan yung isip nya kung saan

(Actually, it is not literally called confusion, it is just, everything is mixed wherein, the

house of the student became his/her study place, when to relax? So, there is no division

and regulation.)

(For example, students are not

obliged to wear uniform because it’s online.) Kung nahihirapan ang teachers, of course

,nahihirapan din ang mga students. (If the teachers are sufferings of course, the students

too.)

naapektuhan. (The students are mostly affected; I think they are the one who is really

affected of these changes.)

(In teachers,

I just realized right after the 2nd semester started that teachers should not give a lot of

activities because the students are being flooded by the set of activities that every subject

gives.)

(As a teacher, I lessen the activities I’m sending to my

students because we teachers are having difficulties because of the different sections we

have what more in the part of the students?)

216
ngayon is nahihirapan sila at di sila natutuwa. (I have witnessed the situation of students

in this new normal education wherein, most of them are experiencing difficulty and they

are not happy with the situation.)

(Because the students nowadays, it’s okay for them if you will be just giving

them one activity as long as it is significant and related to them, so, I think that is the

scenario they wanted to have. That is why I’m working on it especially in the second

semester.)

pagkain. (So far, I am achieving my goal for instance, in grade 7 instead I discuss and

discuss the cell, I asked them to create a cell model made of food.) Nag-eenjoy na silang

gumawa ng cell at the same time natuto din sila. (They enjoyed making the cell at the

same time they learn from it.) So, I think kailangan din naming mag-adjust pagdating sa

situation na yon. (So, I think, we have to adjust in terms of that situation.) Yan yung

(Those are the situation I encountered or

noticed in the situation of my students.) Noong 1st sem di sila gaanong nag-aeenjoy and

(Last 1st semester, they are not

having fun but this 2nd semester, all of them are already having fun and accustomed.)

With the right type of approach, mag-eenjoy at mag-eenjoy parin yung bata. (With the

right type of approach, the student will enjoy as time passes.)

217
Researcher: Based on the times that you are teaching; do you think that the performance

of the student’s changes?

Informant: So, based on the times noong pagtuturo ko sa bata so far kagaya nung mga

nung learning noong bata is mababa. (So, based on the times that I am teaching, so far,

just like what I’ve said last 1st semester, I was shook and the reliability of learning of the

students is low.)

mababa yung reliability kumbaga nung learning. (Let’s just admoit that the performance

of the students become low than before.) Kung tatanungin natin yung bata, mababa talaga

noong 1st sem. (If we will ask the students, it is indeed that their academic performance

in the last semester is low.) Because nag-adjust naman lahat, ngayong second sem

(Because they are still adjusting

but now in second semester, I noticed that they are being accustomed with the changes

specifically in their online classes, modular, and they already know what to do to their

quizzes.) Medyo nabawasan na yung adjustments ng bata. (The adjustments the students

do lessen.)

email. (Honestly there were problems occurred just because of the changes in our

institutional email.)

yung nagging problema nila. (Especially to my grade 7 advisory class, they experienced

different problems regarding the institutional email (laugh).)

218
alam na nila ang gagawin nila, in short alam na nila yung technical side so, ang result

noon pagdating sa learning nila is mas makakapag focus sila na sagutan. (After settling

that, they went back to normal and they are just joining again to our online class and

they already know how to use google classroom. Since they are already accustomed with

the technical side, the result of it to their learning is they can focus on answering the

activities given.) Pero as a I’ve encountered marami paring mga bata ang hindi sanay

although nakakapg-adjust na sila. (But I still encounter some students who are not able to

go with the flow although they are adjusting.) Kumbaga parang di sila inclined sa mga

ganoong bagay. (Maybe they are not inclined with those things.)

(But, if you will look to their

submitted activities, a lot of them turned in their activities blank or some of the parts of

the activity is blank.)

nila alam kung paano iedit or alam yung mga pipindutin after nila masagutan, yun yung

mga di pa alam ng mga bata. (Maybe it is not because the student doesn’t know the

answer instead, they don’t know how to edit or they are not familiar with the buttons for

them to answer the activity, so, those are the things that the students still don’t know.) So,

(So those are the things that we teachers

needed to work-out.) So, I think, sa learning hindi pa sya totally na aassess right now.

(So, I think in the aspect of learning, we can’t assess it totally right now.)

(There is no actually an

assessment available if the student learning or not.)

219
personally. (Both of you are lucky because I’ve taught you in science last year so, I didn’t

experience difficulty in assessing you because I know both of you personally.)

(While those students that I didn’t handled or

meet personally I can say that the grades I gave are not reliable because the learning of

the student in the present is not also reliable.) Kung mahirap sa inyo, mahirap din sa

amin. (If it is hard for you, it is also hard for us.) Ngayon wala pang time para magsabi

ng ay natututo pala yung mga bata. (At this moment of time, we can’t tell that the students

are learning.) Hindi pa talaga sya maidentify right now. (Right now, it is still

unidentifiable.)

Researcher: How these problems/changes affect their academic performance based on

the outputs they submitted/ performance shown during an online class?

Informant: Based from their outputs, nasabi ko nga kanina na yung ibang bata pagdating

sa written outputs malaking percentage sya however, yung ibang bata hindi sila

nakakapasa on time, merong nalelate, and meron namang di talaga nagpapasa at all.

(based on the outputs they submitted just like what I’ve said a while ago that there are

students who are not able to pass on time, and there are students who’s really don’t have

any plan to pass their activity.)

nila. (It is really hard to assess them, that is why the outputs are our basis for grading

because those are the things, we see from them.)

na ito or not. (So, once we’ve already read or see their outputs, we will have an initial

impression if this student is good or not.) At the same time pwede ring mas mahirapan or

(At

the same time, we could also be confused because why is it he/she is low performing

student but in the output he/she submitted, it is lit.) Kaya ang ginagawa namin, di lang

outputs ang binabasehan namin kundi pati yung performance nya. (That is why aside

from their outputs, we also base our grades on the performance they show during

classes.) (I based their performance

on our online classes.)

naman pumapasok yung bata at all. (But the problem here in online classes, some of them

are not joining the class so, how would you grade them if you don’t have any records,

how can we able to make an assessment?) So, ang changes pagdating doon sa mga

problems ang effect non is gulo-gulo or nagkaroon ng confusion and yung problem is di

pagdating sa teachers at sa grades noong bata and ang pinaka effect non is sainyo hindi sa

amin. (So, the changes in terms of those problems mentioned brought confusion and the

problem itself cannot be called as a minimal word instead, a big problem when it comes

to the teachers and to the grades of the students, and most of the effects of it will fall to

the student’s side not on us.)

Age: 26 years old Sex: Male Type of School: Private

Civil Status: Single Number of years of teaching: 4 years

Researcher: What grade you currently teach? (Sa anong baitang ka kasalukuyang

nagtuturo)

Informant: Ahmmm, I’m currently teaching the core subjects of senior high school and

grade 9 english. So yun yung mga loads ko ngayon. (Ahmmm, I’m currently teaching the

222
core subjects of senior high school and grade 9 English. So those are my loads right

now)

Researcher: Have you always taught at this level? (Palagi ka bang nagtuturo sa baitang

na ito?)

Informant: Yah, I have been teaching senior high school since I started working here.

From the year 2017, This school is my first teaching experience. So simula noong nag

start ako here, na-assign na ako sa senior high and junior high pero ngayong pandemic isa

lang ang junior high ko- grade 9 and most of my subjects are for senior high na. (since I

start teaching here, I was assigned in senior high and junior high but now, pandemici

only have one junior which is grade 9 and most of my subjects are for senior high)

Researcher: How long have you been teaching? (Ilang taon ka nang nagtuturo?)

Informant: I’ve been teachiching for almost 4 years.

Researcher: I’d like you to think back over the first day of school in the school year

2020-2021 and analyze the situations that you encountered. (It could be positive or

negatibo.)

Informant: Okay, while looking back to the first day. Actually, even the first day

honestly, I was anxious before the class started because of this unpresented learning

modality. I don’t know what my classroom management be like, what problems might

arise or how my lessons will be delivered effectively. So mostly yun yung concern ko

before it started. Pero nung nagsimula naman of course everyon is adjusting ahmm

223
waiting for a good or strong internet connection before they start. So basically, yun lang

yung mga naalala ko nung mag start yung class and then from there, it goes smoothly

naman. (Okay, while looking back to the first day. Actually, even the first day honestly, I

the class started and then from there, it goes smoothly.)

Researcher: What are the changes you noticed in terms of teaching style and modality

used in your school/institution?

Informant: Of course, we have to adopt to the changes. Diba halos lahat naman ng mga

institution went online so that’s all we can do. Our institution reshapes the way of

teaching from face-to-face to online. We even subscribe to digital learning website. Yung

Aralinks, kami aralinks we are actually paying that website para macater kami. So we

subscribed in to that and we even subscribe to this yung iba pang mga learning website to

help us evaluate our students. We also look or evaluate an efficient video conferencing

app so may mga session kami with the teachers teaching them how to use zoom or google

meet and then from there we are evaluating which one we will use because syempre iba-

Ako I really preferred zoom because I

feel that It is easier. (of course, we have to

Researcher: What are the effects of these changes on your usual teaching method utilize

before?

Informant: Okay, ahmmm I am actually an innovative type of teacher, so I like to try

new modern digital way of teaching before I would search for different learning

activities, learning apps, and I would recreate them to my PowerPoint since internet is not

available inside a classroom. Ganoong klaseng teacher kasi ako and I will deliver it using

my projector. So now, that everyone is online, that changes actually changed my methos

easier because everyon has internet connection already that means every student can

pparticipate and access the apps and the activity. Also, I don’t need to recreate them

anymore. So less hassle for me. However, there were activities that I used to do that

requires physical interaction which obviously I cannot do anymore. Another thing, this is

a big change during exam, or even during simple quiz I am very strict and I try to

rearrange the sitting arrangement and break what ever plans my students created just to

pass the exam- you know what I mean. Since I cannot see them or I can’t do that

225
anymore, I trained my mind that I should not stress myself anymore. As much as

possible, I give them just enough time to answer the question or maybe I will paraphrase

the questions. So that, I can still get as much as reliable result as possible. So if the

student really study, he/she can easily answer the question. (Okay, ahmmm I am actually

Researcher: What are the adjustments you made to cope up in the changes of teaching

style/methods in this school year?

226
Informant: Of course, first, napaka importante I have to change my internet to more

reliable provider so I used to have a DSL from PLDT and I switched to a fiber to

NXFIBER not converge. I don’t know if you are familiar with that haha. For me I can say

that it is the most reliable provided so far haha. So wala pa naman ako challenges sa

kanila. Second is I have to upgrade my laptop, since may laptop is 4years old already and

it has some issues and I have to get a new laptop for me to deliver my lessons smoothly.

And third, I have to look for a quiet place and clean space in our house to do my

discussions. I have to close or lock the door to avoid interruption na rin. Lastly, I have to

strengthen my patience when my internet and the student’s internet connection are not

stable. I think ang hirap talaga non. So, you have to repeat what you’ve said and you have

to wait for them and wait for the internet connection to come back or to become stable, so

doon papasok ang patience saka kapag nasa classroom I don’t like students going out

from time to time but here since napuputol sila you have to accept them, you have to

accept and accept all through out so that’s my test of patience right there. (Of course,

and accept all through out so that’s my test of patience right there.)

Researcher: Suppose this pandemic end and everything back to normal, what academic

modality would you use? (The traditional one which is the face-face or the system we

used under new normal education such as online class/modular) (Kung sakaling matapos

kinagawiang face-to-face o online class/modular?)

Informant: You know what having the experience to both modalities, and waying their

pros and consequences because they have pros and consequence right? I believe we can

actually use both modalities. I find it useful; you know face -to-face is still important in

learning because you don’t get experience lang diba kasi pag nasa harap ka naman ng

teacher mo is di naman maglalag si teacher mo and makukuha mo yung information you

will be able to socialize and widen your circle of friends. Which in this kind of se up, we

are limited for socialization really because iba parin ang face0-to-face sa socialization

and there are academic and life skills that can be acquired through physical interaction.

However, on the

other hand we are now living in the 21 st century, right? Wherein. Everything is

transitioning online or digitally. So, it is very relevant that we are exposing our students

to online activities as well and to let them explore the world of technology. So, I was

thinking to do the discussion inside a classroom and leave an activity online or ask a

228
project that they have to be online but all of the exams should be do face-face parin to

evaluate and to monitor them if they are doing it in the right way. (You know what having

the experience to both modalities, and waying their pros and consequences because they

have pros and consequence right? I believe we can actually use both modalities. I find it

useful you know face -to-face is still important in learning because you don’t get

experience only and since you are in front of your teacher and you are not going to

experience lagging and you can absorb the information and you will be able to socialize

and widen your circle of friends. Which in this kind of set up, we are limited for

socialization that why socialization in face to face is still irreplaceable and there are

academic and life skills that can be acquired through physical interaction. So, the

learnings of the students are limited in online. However, on the other hand we are now

living in the 21st century, right? Wherein. Everything is transitioning online or digitally.

So, it is very relevant that we are exposing our students to online activities as well and to

of the exams should be do face-face to evaluate and to monitor them if they are doing it

in the right way.)

Researcher: Do you think it is effective to combine these two educational modalities? If

yes, in what way it will be effective?

Bakit?)

Informant: Yah I think it will be effective, really effective because just like what I’ve

said a while ago, you are not just hitting a one skill because you are just like hitting two

birds in one stone right, so you’re training them to be globally competitive by having the

229
skill and knowledge about technology and information but at the same time you don’t

want to compromise their face-to-face skill- how to socialize, how to interact with other

people, so I think it would be really effective. I think we have just to find the right

schedule, the right subject, the right format or set-up of classroom to do that. It needs a

very careful strategy before to implement that. But I do believe it will be really beneficial

not only for the teachers but also for the students.

Researcher: What do you think about the situation of your students right now? And what

do you think they are doing to cope with these sudden changes?

Informant: You know guys? Kayo kasi you are millennials and generation z na

tinatawag so I think my students transition to online set up easily. They might have

problems to the internet connections but at the end of the day we will be able to fix it.

You know? So, I think aside from that internet connection, the real challenge here is the

discipline of the student to stay focused and to avoid interruption or distractions diba,

since the students are inside the comfort of their house or even worst in their bedroom

with no one in authority to police them, they easily distracted by their phone or by their

bed. So yun talaga yung problem, yung challenge nila online class- how to stay focused

when everything is right there very tempting because they can easily be distracted right?

So yun yung challenge for my students. (You know guys? You are called millennials and

generation z so I think my students transition to online set up easily. They might have

problems to the internet connections but at the end of the day we will be able to fix it.

You know? So, I think aside from that internet connection, the real challenge here is the

So that are the challenges of my students)

Researcher: Based on the times that you are teaching; do you think that the performance

of the student’s changes?

Informant: I think the performance of my students change a little. Pero in a good way

ha, kasi parang they get a higher grade now since they can easily help themselves during

evaluation because everything is in front of them. You know guys, alam naman ng

teacher yan, we all know and we are fully aware of that (laugh). Yeah, because we might

do the same thing kung kami ang nasa kalagayan nyo right? However, the students who

performed well during face-to-face, are the same students who performed well during

online classes.

So, I think your attitude,

your character, cannot be easily remold by the sudden change in academes. So ayun. (I

think the performance of my students change a little. But in a good way because I think

that they get a higher grade now since they can easily help themselves during evaluation

because everything is in front of them. You know guys, teachers know that, we all know

and we are fully aware of that (laugh). Yeah, because we might do the same thing if we

231
are in your shoes right? However, the students who performed well during face-to-face,

are the same students who performed well during online classes. So, it doesn’t change,

the students that excel back when we were face to face set up still performed well during

online classes. The stubborn students when we were face to face set up are still the same

during online class. So, I think your attitude, your character, cannot be easily remold by

the sudden change in academics. So that’s it.)

Researcher: How these problems/changes affect their academic performance based on

the outputs they submitted/ performance shown during an online class?

Informant: Ahm, actually, it helped them to do a better output. Kasi everything yung

mga mga output na pinapagawa ko like video, they have to record themselves reciting a

poem. They are doing this offline. You don’t need internet. So, you can help yourself

truly. So, feeling ko lahat ng mga nagagawa nila much better kasi they don’t have to

perm it live inside the classroom and baka mastage pride pa sila. So I think, lahat ng mga

naibibigay nila saakin ngayon is better output compared to face-to-face.kaya lang

syempre, we cannot measure their real ability kapag kasi online. Like, reciting a poem,

we don’t know if you are just reading but you can actually notice if you’re reading

because there is a board behind the camera. So im just focusing on how well they deliver

it even though you are reading give some emotions and give some gestures. And sa mga

videos naman how well they edit their video and the content ay importante rin sa akin and

given na yung iba naman doon is naga google naman na pero okay lang ang importante is

nagsusubmit. Yung mga tamad naman dati is parang lalong nagging mas bumaba yung

academic performance nila kasi parang mas nabigyan sila ng laya. Kasi pag nasa

So

Sabi nga if

you are not willing to learn, no one can help you but if you are determined to learn, no

one can stop. (Ahm,

actually, it helped them to do a better output. Because everything, the output that they

need to do like video, they have to record themselves reciting a poem. They are doing this

offline. You don’t need internet. So, you can help yourself truly. So, I have a feeling that

every output they do now is much better compared to face to face. But of course, we

cannot measure their real ability in online. Like, reciting a poem, we don’t know if you

are just reading but you can actually notice if you’re reading because there is a board

behind the camera. So im just focusing on how well they deliver it even though you are

reading give some emotions and give some gestures. And in their videos, you can how

they edit their videos and the content is also important for me and I know that some of

them are using google but it’s okay, at least they submit it. The students who are lazy

back then, their academic performance is low because they have the freedom. Because if

they are in classroom, their classmates and teachers can influence or pressure them to

study. But now that they are inside their house it becomes worst, some of them don’t want

to join so they are going to say that their internet is slow or they don’t have internet,

233
where in fact they just want to play ML, that they forget that it is time in online class. So

basically, these are the problems that the lazy students face. They said that if you are not

willing to learn no one can help you but if you are determined to learn no one can stop.

So, students need to think like this when it comes to their academics.)

Civil Status: Single Number of years of teaching: 34 years

Researcher: What grade you currently teach? (Sa anong baitang ka kasalukuyang

nagtuturo)

Informant: Actually, I used to teach English 10. But our principal decided to let me

handle supposedly grade 7 English this school year.

Researcher: Have you always taught at this level? (Palagi ka bang nagtuturo sa baitang

na ito?)

Informant: I used to teach grade 7. Actually, I was given a short of promotion by giving

me all grade 10 classes in English beginning 2010. But since our reading program has yet

to major leap daw, according to to our principal he actually told me that I should be

teaching grade 7 this school year to focus more on our reading program. But

unfortunately, because of the pandemic I have yet to give all my program for those who

is actually academically challenge specially in reading and writing.

Researcher: How long have you been teaching? (Ilang taon ka nang nagtuturo?)

Informant: I have been teaching for 34 years. I am supposed to retire, hopefully.

Researcher: I’d like you to think back over the first day of school in the school year

2020-2021 and analyze the situations that you encountered. (It could be positive or

negatibo.)

235
Informant: Actually, since I was actually living in Bayabas, that’s the farthest town in

Labo. And the means of transportation then is very difficult because we need to rent a car

to be able to travel from Bayabas Labo and going to Daet. So unfortunately, and

fortunately for me, I was able to go to Daet although I have to spend much money to do

that. Now I was thinking that, since the vaccine has yet to be approved by FDA, I was

actually thinking that ahm I have that apprehension that this school year will be or would

be harder or more difficult not only for our students and their parents but also for us

teachers because we really don’t know how can we start or how can we be able to deal

and to give those things that our students should be learn from.

Researcher: What are the changes you noticed in terms of teaching style and modality

used in your school/institution?

Informant: Actually, in this school we are actually using modular distance learning

modality. Now, that’s very different from what we used to. Because we are just used to

give modules only to our students that will be used by them from June until April. But

since we had this new modality, we are actually forced by the department to print

materials although printers are not actually functional. Bond papers are not available so

what we did was use our own money so we could be able to print modules that should be

distributed to the students or parents as early as Friday every week. That’s it.

Researcher: What are the effects of these changes on your usual teaching method utilize

before?

236
Informant: There’s actually a big change. Because during the last year, I really had a

hard time teaching my students specially in the lower section but how much more for

now? I really don’t know. When I actually received the parallel assessments that I send to

them to my students last January I thinks it’s the last week of January, I received 50% of

the outputs of my students and because of that I can say that they are having a hard time

answering those tests as well as performance tasks because they really don’t know how to

do it. Maybe they have yet to learn the competencies that they actually supposed to learn

as early as our first module in the 1st quarter. We really don’t know what’s really

happening to them.

Researcher: What are the adjustments you made to cope up in the changes of teaching

style/methods in this school year?

Informant: (Laugh) I actually use social media I’m not good at it you know it John

Carlo. I’m not good in using Facebook, Twitter, although I have an account for each of

them but unfortunately, I don’t know how to use these social media to be able to connect

to my students. But sad to say again, majority of our students here could not actually

connect with me maybe because they have problems in their internet connections, they do

not have any cellphones, and these is actually ano these are the things that actually

bothered me so much.

Researcher: Suppose this pandemic end and everything back to normal, what academic

modality would you use? (The traditional one which is the face-face or the system we

used under new normal education such as online class/modular) (Kung sakaling matapos

237

kinagawiang face-to-face o online class/modular?)

Informant: I’d rather choose face-to-face. Because I could actually give feedbacks to my

students whenever they need them and then I could actually give them what they needed.

Just like in quarter 1. Supposedly po the competencies or most of the competencies for

module 4 should be given as early as the second lesson for that quarter. But

unfortunately, the competency was taken three lessons behind. So how could my students

answer the activities in lesson 2 or module 2 when in fact the simplest form of verbs, the

principal parts of verbs, are only given during the 5th lesson. So, the department should

see to it that the learning competencies should be arranged according to their

complexities. The simplest one should be given first before the most difficult

competencies be given to them. That’s it.

Researcher: Would you choose online class/modular? Why or why not? (Pipiliin mo ba

ang online class/modular? Bakit?)

Informant: Oh, my goodness, what I do is or the government should do something about

internet connections. We believe that the Philippines is lagging in behind and in other

countries in the south east Asian region because of very poor internet connection. Hello?

Researcher: Do you think it is effective to combine these two educational modalities? If

yes, in what way it will be effective?

Bakit?)

Informant: Good, especially if the students and the parents as well is capable of getting

and having internet connections and gadgets that would really give them the better start

238
of when it comes to teaching and learning. Kasi nga if you are actually given the

privilege to fix internet connections and gadgets, then it will not be very hard for you to

get references straight from the internet. Remember that a teacher with students is

actually very limited. (Because if you are actually given the privilege to fix internet

connections and gadgets, then it will not be very hard for you to get references straight

from the internet. Remember that a teacher with students is actually very limited.) I am

only teaching English for 1 hour when I fact these students if they are actually having

internet connection, the they could actually review things they can actually get materials

from the internet without the help of the teacher. That would be better off but the thing is

in our case, that would be a big no. The reason why, we are using modular distance

learning.

Researcher: What do you think about the situation of your students right now? And what

do you think they are doing to cope with these sudden changes?

Informant: To tell you, I really don’t know what they are doing. When you actually

arrived this morning, I was actually checking their performance outputs and I really don’t

know because I can’t really see them one by one. I can meet them face-to-face but I can’t

do it. In short, I really don’t know (sad face). They are problematic as their teachers as I

am (laugh). I am praying that the pandemic should end as early as now to be able to cope

up with these changes.

239
Researcher: Based on the times that you are teaching; do you think that the performance

of the student’s changes?

(Of course, yes) Because I really don’t know if

their parents are making their outputs. I actually noted that some of the outputs given by

the students because everyone has different penmanship. I am just thinking that they are

getting assistance from their parents. But I really don’t know that it should be done

because they should be practicing doing their outputs by their own. But the thing is,

maybe he/she is not motivated that is why he’s actually asking for help to his/her parents

to do the assignments.

Researchers: How these problems/changes affect their academic performance based on

the outputs they submitted/ performance shown during an online class?

As what I told you nga, actually I’m handling 120 students right

now. (Oh, my goodness! As what I told you, actually I’m handling 120 students right

now.) I only receive 60%percent of their outputs. Supposedly, they have to submit it as

early as the last week of January. I have yet to make my grades because I really don’t

know how could I be able to do that. Because I have yet to check their outputs. So

definitely, their outputs are affected by this modality.

Informant: Teach? Grade 10.

Researcher: Have you always taught at this level? (Palagi ka bang nagtuturo sa baitang

Informant: Ahm yes, ever since I got hired in the DEPED I’ve been handling fourth year

and the kto12 came ahm im handling grade 10 supposed to be fourth year.

Researcher: How long have you been teaching? (Ilang taon ka nang nagtuturo?)

Informant: 27 years

Researcher: I’d like you to think back over the first day of school in the school year

2020-2021 and analyze the situations that you encountered. (It could be positive or

negatibo.)

Informant: Okay, so over the first day of school year 2020-2021 we’re expose to a

number of situation mostly negative sadly but that is the truth, so for us teacher problems

241
did not occur because we were given or we were given a period of preparation and

materials who provided by the school of the DEPED first sem but for the parents the first

challenge that I have notice was that their acceptance to the fact that they will spare some

of their precious time to their children, a lot of them was complaining about the situation,

they said that how come they will teach their children when they are not a teacher. Some

do not have that ability to assist their children in answering the module since that ahm

you are aware that our provine we have the most of the ahm public school have chosen

modular distance learning so that’s one, one situation mostly the complain of the parent

that they could not teach their children.

Researcher: What are the changes you noticed in terms of teaching style and modality

used in your school/institution?

Informant: Ahm so it is obvious that it have a lot of changes to work in terms of

teaching style because in the usual place we can use verity of techniques but today since

we are using modular distance learning modality that we think we can use are very

limited ahm there’s no choice except to visit them from time to time and then of course to

ahm to communicate with our students through the group chat so very limited we cannot

apply any of those teaching strategies that we have been using in the usual face to face so

in times of confusion we just use the group chat .

Researcher: What are the effects of these changes on your usual teaching method utilize

before?

242
Informant: Okay so ahm for me this is a bit frustrating because as a teacher what I want

is to ensure the students ahmm the students I want to ensure that my students able to learn

something from me so with these changes seldom we can be together, seldom we can talk

with one another and seldom we can exchange ideas together it’s a bit frustrating in my

side as a teacher.

Researcher: What are the adjustments you made to cope up in the changes of teaching

style/methods in this school year?

Informant: So ahm same since we are facing this tremendous alteration in the field of

education, I need to make myself be equip of the knowledge on how to operate a gadget

what we say the computer so that I ahm can still meet my student through the use of the

internet.

Researcher: Suppose this pandemic end and everything back to normal, what academic

modality would you use? (The traditional one which is the face-face or the system we

used under new normal education such as online class/modular) (Kung sakaling matapos

kinagawiang face-to-face o online class/modular?)

Informant: If everything back to normal I would still go with the usual face to face,

why? Because I believe that the best way to impart knowledge to the learner is to be with

them every time, they need assistant and every time they are confuse and they want

correctly explanation so it’s very clear that I favor the usual face to face. Ahm modular?

In our side, for us teacher to has that modular is ahm what we call that? Ahm when basta

243
I would rather think face to face and then of cource the combination of both the modular

for sometimes incase were not able to meet in the school that modular learning will still

be able to use. Aa yes, aaa just like what I have said earlier modular distance learning can

be used if incase ahm meeting them face to face is impossible like in times of calamity,

disasters it could be possible that we will just send the module then ahm students will be

the one to answer in the module.

Researcher: What do you think about the situation of your students right now? And what

do you think they are doing to cope with these sudden changes?

Informant: We all know perhaps as of this moment right now our students are in

difficult situations and some of them already bored in a way they deal with the lessons

others are depress so they cannot go ahm they cannot do the things that they used to do

because of the crisis so putting our self in the shoes of our students or my students

perhaps that ahm they couldn’t do the usual things they have been doing it’s a bit

frustrating for them or ahm most of them really are depressed most not all, by doing the

technique or the ahm modular distance learning because ahm they need na to go to school

they can enjoy staying with their family.

Researcher: Based on the times that you are teaching; do you think that the performance

of the student’s changes?

244
Informant: So ahm this time ahm most students, I’m thinking of the recognition of the

appreciation but with the type of modality seldom they are being praise ang recognize as

a result a lost their eagerness to lost their interest in answering the method.

Researcher: How these problems/changes affect their academic performance based on

the outputs they submitted/ performance shown during an online class?

Informant: Ahm, the ahm, the output that our students have submitted as we have

experience during the first quarter we are appointing because most of them did not really

take and ahm did not answer the modules seriously most of them just copy the answer

from the answer sheet from the answer key and so learning is impossible.

association. Nagtuturo ng math for grade 10 and also personality development for grade

11 senior high school. (I’m teaching Math for grade 10 and also personality

development for grade 11 senior high school.)

Researcher: Have you always taught at this level? (Palagi ka bang nagtuturo sa baitang

Informant: Actually, ten years na si sir nagtuturo, yung mathematics is tuloy-tuloy

simula sa simula and yung personality development grade 11 ahm, 2 years palang si sir

nagtuturo. (Actually, I have been teaching for 10 years, I’ve been teaching Math from the

beginning while the Personality development for grade 11 uhm just 2 years.)

Researcher: How long have you been teaching?

(Can I speak tagalog

for easy…) okay ang question dun is kung babalikan ko yung ahm unang taon ng

pagtuturo ano yung pusitibong nangyare or nagatibo? (Okay, the question is, think back

over uhm the first day of school, what is the negative and positive things that happened)

Saakin kasi ang nakikita ko lang naman dun is positive as parokyalista as katoliko ang

nakikita ko is positibo. Alam niyo kung bakit? Sa dami ng problema we have a COVID-

naging hadlangyung mga challenges like say for example, COVID-19 or yung pandemic

na kinakaharap natin ngayun. (For me, the only thing that I see was only positive, as

parochialist, as Catholic the only thing I can see was positive things. You know why? We

have a lot of problems, COVID-19, we are in a middle of pandemic but people are being

positive, teachers are being positive, department of education are being positive,

determined to uhm continue the education, continue the knowledge for the students,

COVID-19 or pandemic is not a hindrance to continue the education for students.)

Researcher: What are the changes you noticed in terms of teaching style and modality

used in your school/institution?

247
Informant: Ang mga taga parochial school is Modular distance learning, actually

fortable o hindi ganon kalakas ang internet connection at the same time ang talagang

kapalonga talaga ay minsan wala minsan may signal in terms of internet connection. (The

students on parochial school is modular distance learning, actually, we are using

modular distance learning here because some areas or places cannot access a good

quality internet connection and here in Capalongga, sometimes we have no signals in

terms of internet connection.) Hmm oo, actually oo naman. Ang modular naman kasi is

tulad ng sinasabi ng DEPED sulong edukalidad, by the help of consequent yung pamilya,

(Hmm actually yes, just like DepEd said, modular is a self learning education, by the

help of the family, barangay officials ahm they helped by distributing and returning the

modules properly, by that they can help the students)

Researcher: What are the effects of these changes on your usual teaching method utilize

before?

Informant: Actually sabi ni John Dewey, learning by doing, yung sinasabi niyang mas

maraming matututunan ang bata by doing tama?

Satin during face-to-face talagang

mathematics is scarecrow, tinatawag nating scarecrow yung nakakatakot basta para mas

(Actually,

John Dewey once said learning by doing, students have much to learn if they are actually

doing it, right? If we used modular approach, there’s no teacher and not all the parents

can teach their children, they also can’t understand the context in modules. For us,

during face to face we call mathematics is a scarecrow cause it’s scary so for easy way

of teaching we give them activities and we are not moving on to the next topic until they

got they lesson, teachers are being creative when it comes on giving activities to make

sure that the students can learned something, unlike now, we are not sure if the students

can really learned in modular approach, just like I said before, Student A don’t know the

answers they will ask their parents but they cannot answer it because parent do not also

know the lessons right? So that are the changes that we see and we are wishing that we’ll

be back to face to face.)

Researcher: What are the adjustments you made to cope up in the changes of teaching

style/methods in this school year?

Informant: A teacher is always flexible, ang teacher ang dapat excellent talaga lagi ano?

249
kami ng seminar in terms sa new normal education yung mga seminars na dapat

inaatendan para maka come up tayo dun sa makabagong pagtuturo yung sinasabi nating

modular distance learning.

karanasan. (A teacher is always flexible; a teacher should always be excellent right? Also

our school, the principal is our director, we are attending seminars in terms of new

normal education, the seminars that we should attended is for us to come up in the new

normal education, the modular distant learning. School and admins not lacking to train

the teachers to learn the new normal.)

Researcher: Suppose this pandemic end and everything back to normal, what academic

modality would you use? (The traditional one which is the face-face or the system we

used under new normal education such as online class/modular) (Kung sakaling matapos

kinagawiang face-to-face o online class/modular?)

Informant: After pandemic? Okay ahm like what I’ve said balik tayo sa face-to-face kasi

(After pandemic? Okay ahm like what I’ve said we

should back to the face to face because that is the easiest way for the students to learn,

on what they see so the students won’t struggle anymore.)

Researcher: Would you choose face-to-face? Why or why not? (Pipiliin mo ba ang face-

to-face? Bakit?)

250
After

ng pandemic much better na merong face-to-face at at the same time may modular kasi

(To be clear is it after the

pandemic or during the pandemic? After the pandemic, it is much better if we will return

to face to face at the same time we will use modular because if two return to face to face

and at the same time they have modules to answers, of course the students will learn

more because after they got home they still have reading materials that can help them to

learn, much bette, they will learn not only in schools but also in their home and I agree

with this)

Researcher: What do you think about the situation of your students right now? And what

do you think they are doing to cope with these sudden changes?

ang sitwasyon nila ngayun is sobrang hirap. First Quarter medyo okay at nakakasabay,

medyo okay flow nagging maayus ang pag sulat sa module nagiging active sila and then

teaching, nagtuturuan sila minsan through chat, through video call at the same time

251
gumagamit ng internet para makita sila. (Actually, the complaint of the students, based on

my observation, their situation is so difficult. On First Quarter they are still fine, the flow

of learning is still okay, they are active but the next following days it seems that they are

having difficulties, we don’t know if it’s because it is hard and boring and maybe they

are lazy to the modules but I’m glad that the other students when they are asking, I think

they can learn something when you are teaching them through chat, video class and at

the same time they are using internet for them to know and see).

Researcher: Based on the times that you are teaching; do you think that the performance

of the student’s changes?

Informant: Of course, yes, tulad nga ng sinabi ko hindi natin maa idendify for the first

pinaguusapan natin pwede kasing si mama o si papa o si kuyang engineer o si ateng

nursing tama?

In face-to-face talagang

(of course yes, like

what I’ve said, if we talk about their perfomances, we cannot identify who is really the

first place/top ,1 we are not sure if they are the one who answer their modules, it can be

their mom or dad, maybe their engineer brother or their nursing sister right? So their

performance is hard to specify based on their on their modules because based on the

252
writer in multiple intellegences, we can’t say that some students are weak when it come

to the specific subject, some the students are excellent on that subject. They have

differences right? In face to face, we can see the performances of the students, where and

what subject they excel, this is their strength and this is their weaknesses. And now, we

are not familiar in this circumtances and we cannot see their strength and weaknesses.)

Researcher: How these problems/changes affect their academic performance based on

the outputs they submitted/ performance shown during an online class?

Hindi lahat ahm what I mean is hindi lahat yung

problema talagang maiintindihan natin unang una financial pangalawa yung covid crisis

(A little, can we

please go back? Not at all ahm what I mean is not all the answers that we expected in the

performance, not all the students can keep up. Not at all, not all of them are right but we

accept it because like I’ve said we are facing a lot of problems, we can understand it,

first of all, financial problem, second covid crisis and many of the student can’t access

internet connection so that the challenges for teachers, how we’ll understand, how we’ll

correct them, same as for students.)

Age: 26 years old Sex: Female Type of School: Private

Civil Status: Single Number of years of teaching: 2 years

Researcher: What grade you currently teach? (Sa anong baitang ka kasalukuyang

nagtuturo)

Informant: Okay, I’m teaching ahh, grade 7, grade 8, grade 9 and grade 10.

Researcher: Have you always taught at this level? (Palagi ka bang nagtuturo sa baitang

na ito?)

Informant: Yes, I teach in online and as well as through modules.

Researcher: How long have you been teaching? (Ilang taon ka nang nagtuturo?)

Informant: This is my second year in teaching.

Researcher: I’d like you to think back over the first day of school in the school year

2020-2021 and analyze the situations that you encountered. (It could be positive or

254
2021at suriin ang mga sitwasyong iyong nakita noon. Ito ay maaaring maging positibo o

negatibo.)

Informant: So, situation in the past right? So, situation noon ang pinaka essential is you

can ask and talk to the students personally, you can see their facial reaction as well while

answering and we can see if they are cheating or not. (The most essential in the situation

before is you can ask and talk to the students personally; you can see their facial

reaction while answering and we can see if they are cheating or not during the class.)

Diba kapag face to face, usually nakikita namin ang reaction nyo, natutuwa ba kayo o

nalulungkot o nagagalit o naiinis kasi di nyo alam kung anong sagot hahaha. (If you

remember, if we are in face-to-face, we usually see your reactions, if you are happy, sad,

angry, or being annoyed because you don’t know the answer hahaha.) Ngayon kasi

(Currently, we are experiencing

difficulties because we literally don’t know if what is the reaction of the students, just

because we don’t see them and talk with them personally.) Kapag nag o-online class

(If we are in our online

class, uhmm, they do not tell us if what are their feelings during that time because we are

only focusing on our discussion because that is the only time we have, it’s pure

255
discussion only but if there is a time or extra time, we make sure that, that… we are able

to ask them about their lives, studies, etc.)

Researcher: What are the changes you noticed in terms of teaching style and modality

used in your school/institution?

Informant: Okay, in our school, our modality in teaching is blended learning, modular

and online teaching.

(So, in the part of us as teachers, it’s quite exhausting because aside from making

modules, we also need to check what time is it for is to be reminded for online class

wherein, I have to teach and teach again online.)

(The only struggle here in online

class is there are students who are not able to join in our online class because they don’t

have internet connection, poor signal, so these are the reason that our students have.) So

ayon. (So, it is really hard for

us teachers and of course to the students also.)

Researcher: What are the effects of these changes on your usual teaching method utilize

before?

256
Informant: So ano, uhmmm, to the maximum level of adjustment, dahil nga first time ko

adjustments. (So, the adjustments I did is to the maximum level of it because this is my

first time to teach online, the struggles I’ve encountered is… that’s it… there are some

students who are not able to join our online class and it is also hard for us teachers

because here in our school…it is also… what do you call that? The internet connection

here is not that fast compared to others. Those are the struggles uhm…we did a big

adjustment in terms of teaching.)

Researcher: What are the adjustments you made to cope up in the changes of teaching

style/methods in this school year?

ganitong oras magme-meet tayo, mag oonline class tayo tapos kailangan mo ring icheck

or ahh what do you call that, i-remind yung mga bata na I-check nyo modules nyo baka

may nakaligtaan kayong activity, ganon po. (So, the adjustments are… adjustments on

giving time to the students of course, you should check if what time you and your students

will meet virtually for you to make sure that you will be able to teach them. Aside from

that, you also need to check or ahm… what do you call that? You have to remind your

257
students to check their modules because there is a big chance that they forgot to answer

some parts of the activity/ies.) So, yon yun ano? (So, that’s it?) Ano pa ba? (What else?)

Yung sa sunod ay… (The next is…)

(So, in terms of…what is it? Ahh what is it? In

the part of… in the part of the students it seems that it is hard for them to comply

especially we are under a pandemic, uhm maybe it is difficult for them.)

Researcher: Suppose this pandemic end and everything back to normal, what academic

modality would you use? (The traditional one which is the face-face or the system we

used under new normal education such as online class/modular) (Kung sakaling matapos

kinagawiang face-to-face o online class/modular?)

Informant: So I’d rather use face to face, through that kasi mas mamomonitor namin ang

magvi-video ang teacher, so this one is the step for number 1, step 2 and step 3 ganon,

258
(So, I’d rather use face-to-face, through face-to-face, I can monitor them when it comes

to the activities they are doing. We can teach them more effectively in actual way, for

example in bread and pastry. It is hard for the students to take that subject

online/modular because they have to do such activities actual… they have to watch their

teacher personally on how the teacher do the step-by-step procedure on how to make

breads, cakes and how to decorate it. From that point, the students as well as the

teachers are experiencing difficulties on how they will teach it. It is also applicable if…

because other teachers film themselves inside the laboratory and show the step-by-step

procedure to be sent to the students for them to watch and try it. But the thing is, the

students are still not able to do it properly.)

teacher, para saken mas favor ako in face to face. (In that part, we teachers and students

are having struggles, for me I’m more favor of using face-to-face.) Okay.

Researcher: Do you think it is effective to combine these two educational modalities? If

yes, in what way it will be effective?

magsisipag pumasok, for example face to face na, magsisipag silang pumasok sa school

as well as magbabasa ng modules at iche-check nya kung may activities sila thru online,

advantage ng face to face ay yung mga actual activity, just like ano nga uhmm, yun nga

handicrafts, what else? (For me it will be effective if both of them will be combined, it is

259
very effective if the student will make joining classes as a habit, for example we are

already in face-to-face and all of them are always going to school as well as being

diligent in reading and submitting their modules online, I think with that, the students

will really learn. Because the thing is the advantage of having face-to-face is there is an

actual activity can be done just like in making breads, it is a form of actual activity, also

in handicrafts… the activities concerning to handicrafts what else?)

face to face as well as online at modular learning. (Ah… also, making slogans, posters, so

that’s it it will be effective if the teaching process consists of face-to-face as well as

online and modular distance learning.)

Researcher: What do you think about the situation of your students right now? And what

do you think they are doing to cope with these sudden changes?

260
turuan. Kaya lang ngayon, yun nga mahirap talaga kapag walang face to face, kapag

modular at ano lang at uhmm online class lang. (So currently, I notice and feel that the

students enrolled in modular especially those students who are not performing well

before because they are having difficulties, you know it? The students who are not able to

go with the flow of discussion, can’t easily understand the lesson and from that point I

can say that they are really having struggles especially we are not in face-to-face

learning wherein, the teacher can’t give their full attention in teaching the students.

Aside from that, we are not sure that if their parents are really helping them or simply

teaching them what to do, right? Because we can’t deny that uhm… let’s say they are

inside the school, they just need to ask us about the things they wanted to ask about the

subject, we can help them right away. But since the pandemic arises, that’s it… it is

indeed difficult if there is an absence of face-to-face.)

Researcher: Based on the times that you are teaching; do you think that the performance

of the student’s changes?

Informant: Yes, the performance of the students changed, really changed, medyo, don sa

face to face mga active talaga sila, sobrang active kumbaga. (Yes, the performance of the

students changed, really changed… slight, in face-to-face all of them are active, super

active to be described.)

261
nila, doon kami medyo nag aalala, ahh nahihirapan kami don kay hangga’t maaari

talagang sila pinupursige namin na mag online class kayo, mag online class kayo, ulit ulit

naming sinasabi. (Especially the honor students, all of them are actively participating no

matter what happens, but currently although we see their submitted modules and

performance shown during online class, they are still active in our discussion. Our only

concern here is the students that I’ve mentioned a while ago, who are having difficulties

in coping up with the lessons and of course to their classmates. On that part, we are

really worried. Ahhh… we teachers are having hardships that is why we are trying our

best to push them to pursue in studying and join their online classes.) So yun. (That’s it.)

Researcher: How these problems/changes affect their academic performance based on

the outputs they submitted/ performance shown during an online class?

kumbaga yung interest nila medyo, kumbaga, anong tawag don uhmm, basta naging ano,

modules is for ano na lang, for compliance, ganon lagi kasi nilang sinasabi sa amin or

(Okay, when it comes to that uhm…

slight… their academic performance went down, wherein, their interest uhm… what do

262
we call that? Uhm… it just became low… their interest in studying became low because

it seems that they are only doing their modules for compliance alone or just to comply.

Because they are always asking us “Ma’am, when will be the deadline of this activity?”,

“Ma’am I am not finish yet on the last activity you sent to us, what should I do?” just like

that. So, we noticed that these students are not really studying instead they are only

doing their activities for them to pass only and able to comply to their subjects. From

that point, I can say that their academic performance went down.)

Informant: Currently grade 12 kase pe major ako pe for grade 12 ahhh nagrerecord ba?

(I’m currently teaching grade 12 because I’m a P.E. major, P.E. for grade 12. Ahhh, are

you recording?)

Researcher: Have you always taught at this level? (Palagi ka bang nagtuturo sa baitang

na ito?)

263
Informant: May grade 11 ako halo sila grade 12. (I’m also teaching grade 11 aside from

grade 12, actually I’m handling these two grade levels)

Researcher: How long have you been teaching? (Ilang taon ka nang nagtuturo?)

Informant: Pa two years dito sa northills 1 yr sa grade 11 and 1 year sa grade 12 bale 2

years na ako dito sa northills. Kasi since I graduated nagturo agad ako dito. (I have been

teaching here in Northills since I graduated college and I’ve been teaching here for

already 2 years, 1 year on grade 11 and 1 year on grade 12.

Researcher: I’d like you to think back over the first day of school in the school year

2020-2021 and analyze the situations that you encountered. (It could be positive or

negatibo.)

Informant: So since dito sa northills ang binigay nila na subject nila sa akin ay pe. Since

bago palang ako, nakakakaba di yan mawawala ano? (So, here in Northills they gave me

the task to teach P.E. subject. Since I was a newly hired teacher here, the feeling of

nervousness is within me, right?)

maingangay malikot and as a teacher dapat di mo sila masaktan but still dapat mapasunod

mo sila in a nice way. (Then, of course as a teacher we encountered noisy and

inattentive students that really tests our patience but we should not cause any harm or do

such things that will hurt them. The most important thing is, we teachers should know

how to control them in a nice way.) Yung parang ano, parang ano, parang ma control

ayun. ( Ahmm, just like, ahmm what do you call that? As a teacher we should control

264
them to listen and pay attention. That’s it!) Yung dapat ma control mo sila syempre pe

teacher ka ang dapat lahat ng mga activities na ipagawa mo is magagawa nila and iba don

sa ibang subject kasi ang pe is more on physical activities. (You have to control them

especially you are a P.E teacher and the subject requires the students to do physical

activities.) (For your information, P.E. is the

only subject that I’ve been teaching since then.)

Researcher: What are the changes you noticed in terms of teaching style and modality

used in your school/institution?

Informant: Modality, is more on sa pagtuturo dati ako lang noon ang nagsasalita and

and teacher participation, ganon. Panong nagbago? (In the aspect of modality, more on

personal teaching wherein, I am the only one who’s always talking and I still ask my

students about their ideas on our lesson for us to have collaborative participation

between the students and the teacher.) Yung cocompre ko sya ngayon? (I have to

compare it to the present, right?) So ngayon modular kasi kami dito sa northills tapos

may offline digital lang at nakakatulong lang tru messenger ‘no. (Since here in our

institution, we are using modular distance learning then we have “offline digital” with

the use of messenger, right?) Pagbabago kasi, nung una parang madali lang sakin ibigay

ang mga ideas ko non sa bata. (I experienced and experiencing changes because at first it

is easy for me to give my ideas to my students.) Kasi andon e kasama ko sila. (Because I

can interact with them personally.)

(But currently, it seems that they are

265
having difficulties in coping-up the lessons we are giving because we don’t meet each

other personally.)

Researcher: What are the effects of these changes on your usual teaching method utilize

before?

Informant: At first, nahirapan ako kasi syempre as teacher or pe teacher, dapat nakikita

(At first, I

can say that I experienced difficulties of course it’s because I’m a P.E. teacher. I have to

make sure that all of my students are participating in the physical activity that asked

them to perform.) Pero ngayon kasi, thru video ko nalang sila nakikita and nagpapasend

nalang ako sa kanila. (But in the present, instead of checking them personally, I only

asked them to do the activity at their own houses and send it to me thru video via

messenger.)

(So, it is really difficult but as time passes, we will be immuned with those changes.)

Researcher: What are the adjustments you made to cope up in the changes of teaching

style/methods in this school year?

Informant: So as, diba ang mga students ay considered as 21st century learners so

masyado na silang anong tawag don parang ahmmmmm babad sa social media or ano nga

ba tawag don parang ano parang masyadong dikit. (Since we all know that the students

nowadays are considered as the 21st century learners wherein, they are more likely to

ahmm what do we that? Students are fond of social media.) Ayon dikit na masyado na sa

266
social media. (That’s it! The students nowadays are into social media.) So ginamit ko

nila thru messenger or gmails ano. (That’s why I used it as a great opportunity for them

send their videos performing the set of activities thru the use of messenger or Gmails.)

always ask them to send their videos doing such things for them to have grades in the

said activity.)

Researcher: Suppose this pandemic end and everything back to normal, what academic

modality would you use? (The traditional one which is the face-face or the system we

used under new normal education such as online class/modular) (Kung sakaling matapos

kinagawiang face-to-face o online class/modular?)

Informant: So, para sa akin, pwedeng gamitin ang both. (For me, we can use both.) Ang

traditional which is yung sa face to face, yung may mga papagawa ka sakanila personally

(The

traditional one which is the face-to-face wherein, you have the chance to give them

activities personally or just like online where you will be just asking them to send their

videos/outputs thru different online platforms.) Or gagamitin ko yung social medias para

mas maipakita nila yung for example yung talent nila when it comes to dancing thru

social media. (Or, I will be using different social media platforms as an example, for

them to showcase their talents when it comes to dancing thru social media.)

Researcher: Would you choose face-to-face? Why or why not? (Pipiliin mo ba ang face-

to-face? Bakit?)

267
Informant: Yes, face to face. Kasi mas nagiging… kasi mas nakikita mo yung

pagpupursigi ng mga bata pag face to face unlike pag online pwedeng tulungan sila nung

mga parents nila or may interaction palagi sa iba. (Because with face-to-face, the students

are being… Because as a teacher I can see how they pursue in studying unlike online,

there is a big chance that their parents are helping them or they are having interaction

with others in doing such activity that don’t need a help from others.)

Researcher: Would you choose online class/modular? Why or why not? (Pipiliin mo ba

ang online class/modular? Bakit?)

Informant: Online class/modular? Yes, pipiliin ko parin both.

class. (Yes, I would choose both. Because sometimes there are students who are not

capable of going school so, they can choose online class.

Researcher: Do you think it is effective to combine these two educational modalities? If

yes, in what way it will be effective?

online class. (Yes, it’s because if we are in the traditional may of teaching/learning just

like what I’ve said a while ago, we teachers can see their perseverance to finish their

assigned tasks unlike in online class. Syempre yung mga learners baga natin is more on

focus lang sila sa social media and magagamit nila yun. (Of course, our learners are fond

and focused with social media and they can use it as and aid for their learning.)

268
Researcher: What do you think about the situation of your students right now? And what

do you think they are doing to cope with these sudden changes?

Informant: At first, for sure kasi nahihirapan sila kasi lahat naman tayo is nag-aadjust

diba nga. (At first, for sure they are also experiencing difficulties because it is indeed that

all of us are still adjusting.) So, ang akin nalang kapag syempre may mga question sila I

am free to ano parang sagutin naman yung mga tanong nila tinutulungan ko rin sila or

binigyan ko sila ng mga tip tulad ng “ganito gawin mo jan, madali lang to, kaya natin to’

parang ganyan parang ginaguide ko sila kasi nga pareparehas tayo nag-aadjust. (So, of

course everytime they have questions regarding our subject, I am free to answer all of

their questions and I help them or I give them tips like “you will do that like this…you

can do it!” just like that. I guide them throughout the process for us to adjust with these

sudden changes.) Kasi samin nga is modular, so since pag everytime kami nagbibigay ng

mga modules sa kanila meron kaming specific given time para matapos yun. (Our

institution is currently using the modular approach, and everytime we give their modules

we have a specific given time for them to finish and submit their modules to us.) Tapos

(Then of course, they are doing it right after they receive

their modules for them to pass it on time here in school.)

(Sometimes, I give them

activities that are intended to be submitted thru messenger.) Yung mga wala don sa

269
(The information that are not

written in the module, we send it to them with the use of group chats in messenger.)

Researcher: Based on the times that you are teaching; do you think that the performance

of the student’s changes?

(Yes, because currently we don’t

meet and see them personally here in school and to tell you this, we are not able to give

our full attention to know if they are really learning or not.) Kaya for sure nahihirapan

din sila, makakapagadjust din naman. (That’s why, I am sure that they are experiencing

difficulties, sooner or later everyone will be fine.)

Researcher: How these problems/changes affect their academic performance based on

the outputs they submitted/ performance shown during an online class?

(The students

are able to do their written activities that we gave for example, the posttest and pretest

are being finished.)

activity like for example na magpapagawa ako ng collage. (But there are times that some

of my students are not able to to do the activity. For example, I asked them to do a

collage.) (There are some students

270
who are not able to do and pass such activity.) And then katulad nung sa P.E. yung

(Just like in P.E., my students are asked to

perform the basic position of arms and feet, they are not able to submit a video maybe

it’s because of the inadequacy of resources.) Syempre may mga students kami ditong

mga taga Mercedes, Basud, malalayo. (Of course, we have students came from far

municipalities here in Camarines Norte such as Mercedes and Basud.

Researcher: What grade you currently teach? (Sa anong baitang ka kasalukuyang

nagtuturo)

Informant: Okay I’m handling grade 8, Oo so for almost 30 years na nag ha handle ako

ng grade 8. (Okay, I’m handling grade 8, yup, so for almost 30 years I always handling

grade 8.)

271
Researcher: Have you always taught at this level? (Palagi ka bang nagtuturo sa baitang

na ito?)

Informant: Sometimes I handle grade seven or grade nine but most of the years grade 8

is the most.

Researcher: How long have you been teaching? (Ilang taon ka nang nagtuturo?)

Informant: Oo kasi nagturo ako sa Chung Hua ng seven years then nag transfer ako sa

public so yun na nasa 30 years na din. (Yes, because I’ve taught at Chung Hua for 7

years then I transferred to a public school so, that’s it all in all I’ve been teaching for 30

years.)

Researcher: I’d like you to think back over the first day of school in the school year

2020-2021 and analyze the situations that you encountered. (It could be positive or

negatibo.)

Informant: Alright, the following situations that I have encounter during the school year

2020-2021 is on how to adjust into teaching and learning process due to pandemic and

then our face-to-face classes is prohibited and we adopt the new normal situation using

the learning delivery modalities so those are the situation I have encounter during the first

day of classes another is preparing self-learning modules. In our school we use modular

distance delivery.

272
Researcher: What are the changes you noticed in terms of teaching style and modality

used in your school/institution?

Informant: Okay so the changes compare before, right? before we have face-to-face

classes because of pandemic we adopt the modular distance learning.

modalities so the changes so because we adopt the modular distance learning so I was not

able to explain already the given task because of some restriction and limitations. (it is a

new modality that is currently being applied in the new normal. Since, we adopt the

modular distance learning, I was not able to explain already the given task because of

some restrictions and limitations.) Hello? Parang may narinig akong may nagang ano

kasi. (I hear something.)

(Okay, so those are the changes, we used the modular approach for our students and we

still encounter problems/difficulties of course, the students are still adjusting within the

situation.)

Researcher: What are the effects of these changes on your usual teaching method utilize

before?

Informant: Okay so the effects, right? Anyway, kumbaga tayo ay nasa period of or

transition period and adjustments so the effect of this situation specially to the learners

some of the students natin medyo nahihirapan din sila dahil nga dito sa pag adjust sa on

273
the part of the student tyaka teachers medyo mahirap din kasi sa ano yun yung modular

(Anyway, we are currently in

the period of or the transition period and adjustments so, as the effect of this situation

especially to the learners, some of them are experiencing difficulty because of the

adjustments that everyone should do especially in the side of the students. Also, in the

side of us as teachers is also challenging because since we are using modular because as

a teacher you will not be able to meet personally your students.) Walang student –

or yung active in class discussion because of the ano yan new normal or using the

modular. (there is no students-teacher interaction and we can’t identify who are the

students who’s active in class discussion because of the new normal or the use of

modular approach.)

(Yes, their performance is

affected especially when it comes to their faces, you will not able to meet or recognize

them as your students because the only you can see or talk with are their parents only.)

Oo, especially like pag nagbalik ng mga modules and then walang sagot yung mga

mga batang maybe because of some reason why they don’t answer the some of the

activities and the ano modules. (Yes, especially for example when they are giving back

their modules, most of the activities or the modules itself has no answers or blank. With

that blank modules/activities, how could we give them a rating? Maybe it’s because of

some reason why they don’t want to answer it.)

274
sinasubmit. (Yup, until now I’m still struggling in gving them grades because they

haven’t submitted their outputs yet.) Kaya ang style ko nalang doon pag no outputs no

(That is why, I used to use the concept of no output, no grades

because I don’t have any basis for me to give them grades but of course I still inform

them.)

(Yes, you are right! Because we teachers are just the

recorders of your outputs and honestly, it is challenging to give you grades without any

basis.)

Researcher: What are the adjustments you made to cope up in the changes of teaching

style/methods in this school year?

Informant: Ah, well, we cannot do anything on the situation they once said, in the new

normal we have to embrace the situation so I need to be flexible, understanding,

considerate as teaching style or method is concern so flexibility and adaptation helped me

to adjust in the new normal of learning and teaching okay.

Researcher: Suppose this pandemic end and everything back to normal, what academic

modality would you use? (The traditional one which is the face-face or the system we

used under new normal education such as online class/modular) (Kung sakaling matapos

kinagawiang face-to-face o online class/modular?)

275
Informant: Ah, okay so if everything will back to normal, I think I will use the face-to-

face, why? Because face to face we can have student interaction and then you can explain

to the learners or explain the lesson to the learners and able to help them to their activities

etc.

Researcher: Would you choose face-to-face? Why or why not? (Pipiliin mo ba ang face-

to-face? Bakit?)

aming mga learners if we use the online so mahirap din sa part dahil some of our students

ano walang internet connections. (It depends upon the situation and if there is face-to-

face, and it is not a good idea if we will use online because it will be hard for the part of

the students because some of them doesn’t internet conection.)

(That’s why we did not choose online as a mode of

delivery because just like what I have said if there is an issue to the internet connection

speed.) Okay so, yung modular pwede naman yun kasi yung pwedeng magamit yun kasi

(Okay, the modular one can be use because it can be use if there is an

intervention class especially for those students who is left behind.) Kumbaga, modules

ay bihira nang magamit lalo na sapag sapag I school (The modules will help the students

to cope up with lessons especially to those learners who are always absent in class. So,

the modular approach still can be use but I think if there is already face-to-face, it will

276
just be seldomly used.)

ginagamit. (So if we are talking about the private schools, most of them are inclined with

technology unlike in public schools some of the students do not have and gadgets to be

use.) Number one yan na barrier yang internet. (Internet connection is the number one

barrier for that.) Yes, pag online katulad nito nag i-interview tayo online pag ang ano

internet ahm stop muna mahintay tayo ng ilang ano bago bumalik. (Yes, if online like this

one, we are conducting interview online, if the internet connection stopped will need to

wait for some time before the connection goes back.)

(It actually depends, it is

favorable to those who areinclined with it but to those who are not, it is for sure difficult

for them.) So yun ang ano ahm kumbaga yung ano yan itong mga mode of delivery yun

(Ahm… those

learning modalities will not be use all time if there is already face-to-face especially

online.)

Researcher: What do you think about the situation of your students right now? And what

do you think they are doing to cope with these sudden changes?

(Ah… jus like what I’ve

277
said, if the teachers are adjusting, the students have too.)

(Because the students nowadays, there are news about

the suicide cases because of the stress brought by modules.)

(Maybe, it is because the students are really having difficulties especially iof they don’t

really understand what to do to their modules.)

kaya so, pasensya yun nalang. (That’s why we have to set limitations especially for the

students. With their situations we already expected that and if they can’t do it by

themselves, we can’t do anything.)

(Even before there are

students who can’t catch up with the lessons especially we are now currently using

modular approach.)

(In a sense, especially if their parents are

busy wherein, they don’t have any time to teach and guide their children.) Mahihirapan

talaga ang mga bata na mag sarili. (From that point, the student really suffers in terms of

studying.)

ng ano cellphone and then pag kapit bahay nila siguro natanong nalang nire-relay nalang

(Still, the students are

asking with the use of our group chat and then if they are just neighbors, maybe they are

278
just asking the one who has internet connection to chat on the group chat for the sake of

his/classmate.)

gawin. (Sometimes, although it’s already midnight there are students who will text me

and asking if how to do a certain activity.) Parang 7/11 narin 24 hours open ang

cellphone. (Just like 7/11, our cellphones are open 24 hours.)2 Okaya nga yung mga ano

naming schedule work from home ang trabaho namin sinasaguran mga quiries ng bata

about the ano yan yung lesson sa modules na nakalagay kaya ayon din anytime nga

walang pinipiling oras basta pag may nag text sagot agad ganon nalang ang gawa namin

ngayon dahil nga dito sa new normal. (Or in our work from home schedule, that is the

time where we will start answer all of their messages asking how to answer such

activities. So, anytime there is no specific time we have to answer all of their questions

immediately. Those are the things that we can do at this moment of time.)

(Yes, just like that of

course, those students who really wanted to learn and get a high/good grade are asking

that is why I love students who are asking me.)

(That is why sometime I’m the

first one to ask on our group chat if they are okay or not.) Ano na ang ginagawa? (What

they are doing?) Nasaan na ba kayo? (Where are they?) Anong module na? (What

module they are doing?) O kaya nagsasabi ako ng wag mahihiyang mag tanong.

(Sometimes I tend to tell them that they should not be shy if they wanted to ask me

something.) Syempre hindi natin alam malay mo hanggang two years pa itong situation

kaya talagang kailangan masanay nadin sila. (Because we don’t know if how many years

279
will it take let’s say it will take for 2 years more that is why they have should be immune

with this situation. Talagang mas maganda talaga ang face-to-face. (Face-to-face is really

much better.)

(In addition, the students became inspired especially if

their teacher is good at teaching.) Talaganag gusto nilang naka face to face. (Students

really wanted to the face-to-face type of learning.) Kaya hanggat walang vaccine sabi nga

hindi pa pweding mag face-to-face katulad natin ngayon sa interview online no to face-

to-face. (That is why, until there is no vaccine, face-to-face is not allowed just like what

we are doing right now, an online interview.)

Researcher: Based on the times that you are teaching; do you think that the performance

of the student’s changes?

studyante compared last kumbaga yung last year or other year. (Ahm, yes, they have

changed a lot compared before or the other years.) Ah oo yon sobra, parang yung mga

output some of their output, nasubmit sila na incomplete or kaya walang sagot. (Ah… yes

super, just like in their outputs, some of them are passing it incomplete or they don’t have

any answer.)

(Eh… those outputs they

sibmit are our basis in their performance, that is why answering their modules

completely is a must.)

performance based ako ay talagang mababa at affected ang performance nila, (That is

why some teachers especially I me because im handling MAPEH and it is a performance-

280
based subject, their performance is low.)

(If they did not perform the practical test for example currently, they are just sending me

the activities in the module like they are asked to sing and I will listen to it to check so, if

the students didn’t perform, his/her grade will be affected.) Apat na components pa

naman ang MAPEH diba? (Knowing that MAPEH have four components, right?) So,

(So, if a student were not able to pass outputs to two

components of the subject, his/her performance is really affected.) Kaya sabi ko nga as an

(That’s why as an adviser, I don’t give any failing grades, instead I give them

incomplete.)

(They just have to

comply the outputs needed because I don’t want them to fail in the 1 st quarter especially

it is the 1st grade they have.)

hanggang second quarter. (That’s why I told them that they still have a chance to comply

until second quarter.)

(I really wait for it that’s why I extend my patience in waiting.) Kawawa

(It is not

a good idea if I will not do that, consideration is a must especially we don’t have face-to-

281
face and they don’t clearly undertand their modules.)

(They have different interpretations to the modules

they are reading that is why I should give them a chance to submit their outputs right.)

Researcher: How these problems/changes affect their academic performance based on

the outputs they submitted/ performance shown during an online class?

(Ahm… in a sense… since we don’t have an online class instead, we use modular, maybe

if we use online class, the performance of the students will be affected because just like

what I’ve said if online there are different hindrances such as the internet connection and

the type/number gadgets that the student has.)

2021at suriin ang mga sitwasyong iyong nakita noon. Ito ay maaaring maging positibo o

negatibo.)

Informant: Actually, when this school year started, I noticed a lot of changes especially

with the modality or approach we are using. All I can say is everything have changed- the

modality itself, our schedules, workloads, job descriptions, etc.

283
Researcher: What are the changes you noticed in terms of teaching style and modality

used in your school/institution?

Informant: The changes I have noticed are the absence of face-to-face interaction

between the teacher and the students, students rely on their modules as their source of

knowledge and information, no elaboration of the subject matter in the modular approach,

for online classes, oral participation among the students is limited.

Researcher: What are the effects of these changes on your usual teaching method utilize

before?

Informant: The effects of these changes to the teaching method I usually utilized before

is I can use anymore the style I am used to and of course, the satisfaction that your

students effectively learn, and there’s no assurance that the mastery about the lessons

taught is attained. So, with that, it really affects my own teaching method.

Researcher: What are the adjustments you made to cope up in the changes of teaching

style/methods in this school year?

Informant: As a teacher, I have utilized my technologic skills in order to impart

knowledge needed by my students. I need to enhance my skills in using the computer and

also the social media with accuracy but in a proper way.

Researcher: Suppose this pandemic end and everything back to normal, what academic

modality would you use? (The traditional one which is the face-face or the system we

284
used under new normal education such as online class/modular) (Kung sakaling matapos

kinagawiang face-to-face o online class/modular?)

Informant: I prefer to use the traditional face-to-face method to ensure that effective

learning and teaching process would be attained and because of this the delivery of

learning is not difficult on the part of the students.

Researcher: Would you choose online class/modular? Why or why not? (Pipiliin mo ba

ang online class/modular? Bakit?)

Informant: I don’t like online/modular because it is hassle to use and we are not used to

it that is why there is a big possibility that the learning of the students as well as the

performance of teachers in teaching can’t be attained to its highest level.

Researcher: Do you think it is effective to combine these two educational modalities? If

yes, in what way it will be effective?

Bakit?)

Informant: I think combining these two educational modalities is not effective because

our students have individual differences in absorbing the knowledge imparted by the

teachers.

Researcher: What do you think about the situation of your students right now? And what

do you think they are doing to cope with these sudden changes?

285
Informant: Actually, my students are experiencing difficulties in this time of pandemic.

They are telling me that they need somebody to explain the concepts in the modules that

they had received. According to them, the modules are not enough to show and present

the lessons. So, most of them are stressed- we teachers too (laugh).

Researcher: Based on the times that you are teaching; do you think that the performance

of the student’s changes?

Informant: In order to cope up with these sudden changes, our students need more

patience to read and analyze their modules and they need to answer the questions and do

the activities in the module. They should also know how to use the applications in their

cellphone. Yes, the performance of the student’s changes.

Researcher: How these problems/changes affect their academic performance based on

the outputs they submitted/ performance shown during an online class?

Informant: The problems or changes affected their academic performance because they

are not challenged to do the activities in the module and answer the question. Students are

not working independently and as teacher, we are not sure if they really understood the

lessons that we are teaching to them.

Age: 46 years old Sex: Female Type of School: Public

Civil Status: Married Numbers or years of teaching: 7 years

Researcher: What grade you currently teach? (Sa anong baitang ka kasalukuyang

nagtuturo)

Informant: Currently teaching English in grade 7 and grade10 and also teaching creative

writing in grade 12.

Researcher: Have you always taught at this level? (Palagi ka bang nagtuturo sa baitang

na ito?)

Informant: Yes, for grade 10 from the start, uhmm even before k12 curriculum was

implemented and then when the senior high school was ahh implemented in our school

uhmm, I am always chosen by the school head to teach also, even if I am a teacher in

junior high school.

Researcher: How long have you been teaching? (Ilang taon ka nang nagtuturo?)

Informant: I am already teaching for 6 years. I started teaching in Larap National high

school, 2014. So, for this year, going to 7.

Researcher: I’d like you to think back over the first day of school in the school year

2020-2021 and analyze the situations that you encountered. (It could be positive or

287
2021at suriin ang mga sitwasyong iyong nakita noon. Ito ay maaaring maging positibo o

negatibo.)

Informant: So, when the pandemic or uhmm corona virus take its toll of danger in the

Philippines, which is I think that was happen uhmm last March 2020. Uhmm the current

situation then was that most of the activities, so nagstop siya, nagstop yung activities, so

we have to—although grade 10 was already—the grade of the grade 10 was already

finished kaya lang for the lower grades hindi pa natapos, so nahirapan, but then we have

to adjust to the new situation. So, because of the lockdown lahat nag freeze, ano lahat

nagfreeze, so kailangan maraming uhmm, nangyaring mga ano adjustment because of the

pandemic, but eventually ahh the department of education had to continue whatever

mission and vision it has. So uhm we were able to give our students the virtual

graduation, so na implement naman namin yon, successfully. Also, with the brigada

eskwela, so yun kasi ang usual na start ng another school year, ano, yung brigada

eskwela. Kaya lang nagkaroon sila ng changes, so pinag isa nila yon with the oplan balik

eskwela so parang pinag isa nila. So lahat n g adjest because of the covid 19,lahat, health

protocols. So the school year 2020-2021, preparations for this school year talagang nag

adjust lahat, binigyan kami ng orientation, you have to attend several webinar,

preparation in the way that mahirap lahat, mahirap, mahirap yung papasukin, ano po. So

yung uhmmm negative would be the preparation also of the teachers, yung challenge na

mga teachers for the current situation or the new normal in the school environment, so

288

si yung time with the family, although merong pandemic, pero at least you are working

from home, work from home ka so nakakasama mo sila, although may disadvantages din

senior citizen na teachers kasi syempre di sila ganon kaano, pero with the help naman of

the school tapos yung mga co-teachers, so lahat nakapag adjust don kaya lang kailangan

virtual muna lahat ano po, so okay naman ang support ng school sa mga teachers about

the situation nitong school year 2020-2021. (So, when the pandemic or uhmm corona

virus take its toll of danger in the Philippines, which is I think that was happen uhmm

last March 2020. Uhmm the current situation then was that most of the activities was

stopped, so we have to—although grade 10 was already—the grade of the grade 10 was

already finished but for the lower grades it is not done yet, so it’s difficult but then we

have to adjust to the new situation. So, because of the lockdown all the activities were

freeze, since all of the aspects including the education stopped… so, it needs a lot

uhmm… there are diffirent adjustments happened because of the pandemic but eventually

ahh the department of education had to continue whatever mission and vision it has. So

uhm we were able to give our students the virtual graduation, so it was successfully

implemented . Also, with the brigada eskwela, that is the usual start of another school

year. But they had a little change, they combined the oplan balik eskwela and brigada

eskwela. So, everyone was adjusting because of the covd-19, including the health

protocols, all the activities should be aligned with this IATS health protocols. So, the

289
school year 2020-2021, preparations for this school year everyone was adjustin, they

gave us orientation, you have to attend several webina, preparation in the way that

everything was tough. So the uhmm negative would be the preparation also of the

teachers the challenges they taken because there are a lot of changes, uhmm the positive

would be uhmm DepEd gave us a lot of orientations, seminars and workshops that

preparing us, teachers for the current situation or new normal in the school environment,

and also the positive would be we have time with the family, although we are in the

middle of pandemic but at least we are working from home, we work from home so you

can be with you family, although there is also disadvantage there because your focus or

concentration would divert so we need to adjust. Another challenge for teachers is the

uhm skills to use technology. How adept or knowledgable the skills of teachers when it

comes to technology. It was challenging for senipr citizen teachers because they are not

that adept but with the help of the school and co-teachers but everyone adjusted, so the

support of the school for teachers about the situation in this year 2020-2021 was okay.)

Researcher: What are the changes you noticed in terms of teaching style and modality

used in your school/institution?

sakanila during this time kasi hindi pwede yung face to face, talagang banned yon. So

ang lumabas na survey sa amin is more on modular kasi alam natin na most of the student

of Larap National High School have no gadget or they have gadget kaya lang walang

signal or internet connection so because ahh half or sabihin nalang natin na for example

290
50% of the population is from larap but then the 50% is from other which are located

from the ahh mga galing sa mountain and then from the island so yun po yung ahh

nagconcentare kami sa modular. Noong una may lumabas na may online ano nag ano

kami don, nagkaron kami ng orientation ng parang what do you called this, parang dry

ran kami pero di kinaya. After the dry run umayaw na sila, nag ayaw sila don sa virtual

kasi nawawala yung connection tapos minsan di naririnig ng bata, yun after non wala na

lahat nalang nag modular, ayun po.( okay, with regard to the modality and teaching

styles, ahh DepEd had a survey to the parents and students if what is uhm the most

applicable modality during this time because face to face is not allowed. So, the result of

the suvey is more on modular because we know that most of the student of Larap

National High School have no gadgets or they have but they have no signal or internet

connection so because ah half or for example 50% of the population is from larap but

then the 50% is from is from other, which is located from the ahh from mountains and

then from Island so that is the reason ahh we concentrate on modules. Back then we have

tried online class, wehad an orientation ah what do you called this, dry run, but

unfortunately, we could not do it. After the dry run they do not want online anymore

because the connection was lost and some of the student cannot hear the teacher, after

that all of them chose modular, that’s it.)

Researcher: What are the effects of these changes on your usual teaching method utilize

before?

291
sa recitation, the performance, so yung mga ginagamit na approaches and styles before as

in di natin magagamit ngayon kasi nga di mo sila makakahalubilo ano po, personally. So

mahirap kasi mahirap mag grade kasi yung performance di mo alam kung talaga bang sla

rin sumagot non or pinasagot nila, ano mahirap mag mag- assess kami ngayon as teachers

yung style namin na marami kaming approaches sa pagtuturo ah nong face to face totally

nawala, our—ang naging alternative namin is that we have to give them parallel test, mga

remediation test nalang para if ever na ano nga, di sila agad—at least meron silang

nasasagutan other than the modules kaya lang ang problema pa rin ay minsan may

nakakabalik pero wala pa ring sagot, walang sagot kasi walag answer key tapos usually

nga ang makikita natin don ay yung parang iba na yung sulat, sulat nang nanay and that is

a big challenge for teachers nowadays ahh under the modular modality kasi kailangan

maging mind reader or psychic na You have to be very sensitive and ano ngang tawag

dito yung ah bata ba talaga may gawa nito oh diba kailangan may ganon , yung

ahhh, katulad ko very ano naman ako, ano yun, I’m attentive to details, so alam ko kung

ito ay gawa ng bata o ano, so hopefully lahat ng teachers ay ganon kasi that’s very

important kasi natin mame-measure yung sino yung bibigayan ng with honors, sino

talaga yung---- kasi anng hirap nga magbigay ng with honors because of that situation na

sumasagot nito ano. Benefits of the doubt so ganon nalang kung kompleto naman, so---

challenge yun sa teachers on how to assess the performance of the students nowadays.

(There is a huge changes because uhm the usual face to face is not allowed which you

can see the reaction of the students ahh they ahh they can answer the recitation and the

292
performance immediately so those are the styles and approaches that used before that we

cannot use in this set up because we cannot interact them personally. So it was tough

because it hard to give them grades becuase of the performance, we are not sure if they

are one who answers that modules or not, it is hard to assess them now, as a teacher our

styles and approaches when we were in face to face were totally prohibited, our—the

alternative way is that we have to give them parallel test and remediation so if ever

that--- at least they have activities to answer other than modules, but the problem is when

the modules and activities were returned to us, some of them have no answers because

there are no answers on the answer key and usually the penmanship is different, for

example it could be their mother’s penmanship and that is a big challenge for teachers,

nowadays, ahh under the modular modality you need to be a mind reader or psychic, you

have to be very sensitive and what do you called it? Ah does the students really did this?

Right? Your observation needs to be sensitive on their answers because ahh like me, I’m

very, what was that. I’m very attentive to details, so I know if this is a work of my

students or no, so hopefully all teachers are like that because that’s very important

because we can identify the students who deserve to be with honors, and who are the---

because it is hard to give the students with honors because of that situation— the

performance of the students is totally blank. Benefit of the double, that’s it, if their

modules are complete, so—that’s a challenge for teachers on how to assess the

performance of the students nowadays.)

Researcher: What are the adjustments you made to cope up in the changes of teaching

style/methods in this school year?

293
Informant: So okay katulad nga nang nasabi ko kanina, ahh adjustment is kailangan lagi

uhh natutulungan kami kung paano and nagtutulungan din with regard sa worksheets, so

mga magulang sa bahay, so we have to give them the easiest way na maintindihan yung

So clear, simple and not

So you give examples, halimbawa meron kang mga lessons, so hindi

lang lessons, discussions after that maraming examples para makaka relate rin sila and

natin don sa mga modules may mga link na kailngan i-open so as teacher we have to be

sensitive na bigyan sila ng alternative, other than the link. So binibigyan namin sila

ang then we can grade them and we can assess them. So mas ibababa natin yung mga

294

sa kakayanan ng mga bata.( so okay, like what I said before, ahh the adjustments are you

need to be always online and ahh you need to research how to, how to adjust your

teaching styles now and then always attend webinars that uhh DepEd gave and the you

need to ahh always know the deped orders ahh which is our school head is always

updated with regard to deped orders so uhh it can helped us with regard to our

worksheets, our teaching styles, and we will give them assessments on paper because it is

parallel test but you also need to show or guide them on how to answer that parallel test,

the parallel test and learning activity sheet of the students should be simple, for them to

understand it. Avoid using deep words so it won’t complicated because there is one to

guide them, most of the students are helping in their houseso we have to give them the

easiest way to understand the given test, so it is more easy for then to answer it without

their parent’s guide. So clear, simple and not complicated at all so they can easily

answer it and at least they enjoyed it.so you give examples, example you have lessons

and after discussion you have to give them a lot of examples so they can understand and

relate it and it is easy if they do not have to open any links that is inside their modules

because usually I see a lot in their modules that they need to open that link before they

can answer their modules so as a teacher we have to be sensitive, give them an

alternative lesson other than the link. We will give them lessons ahh thatcan easily

answer without any links and we can grade them and we can assess them. So we need to

lower the lessons so that student’s competence will not suffer, in other words, we need to

adjust it to student’s capability.)

295
Researcher: Suppose this pandemic end and everything back to normal, what academic

modality would you use? (The traditional one which is the face-face or the system we

used under new normal education such as online class/modular) (Kung sakaling matapos

kinagawiang face-to-face o online class/modular?)

Informant: So, for me, ahh the most effective pa rin is the face to face, ano the

traditional walang question about it kasi ahh, uhmm yung ano learning by doing kumbaga

nasa loob ka ng classroom, how will you understand the situation para mas madali mo

siyang mai-apply.

tawag dito, I full blast yung face to face so, umm combination, ano combination like

uhmm twice a week magface to face tayo with limited students to explain everything and

then modular or online kasi maganda rin yon, maganda rin na if ever na may threat pa or

lahat hindi pa nakakapa vaccine, as we adjust to the new normal para lang bago maibalik,

para saaken if ever na hindi na ganon ka ano kataas yug threat ah I will suggest na once

or twice a week, we meet face to face to explain everthing, pwedeng Monday tapos

Friday. Monday you explain everthing, sagot sila ng modular, Friday let us assess your

answer, so maganda yon na ganon habang nagreready na tayo ng face to face talaga

again, for me talaga that is the most effective way of teaching our students. ( So for me,

ahh the most effective is still face to face, the traditional one,no question about it because

296
ahh, uhm learning by doing, as they said you were inside the classroom, how will you

understand the situation so you can easily apply it. Additionally, when we meet face to

face you will learn not only in your teacher but also in your classmates so ahh for me,

that is the best way right? When we are teaching for the student, uh I’m a mother it is

better that we can guide and see them for—that is the best but uh if ever that, for example

we will go back but there are still threat and they do not want to uh what do you call

this, full blast the face to faceso umm combination, combination like uhmm twice a week

we will meet face to face with limited students to explain everthing and then modular or

online because it is pretty good, it is good if ever there are still threat or not all the

students are vaccinated, as we adjust to the new normal before we go back to normal, for

me if ever the threat is no longer high ah I will suggest, once or twice a week we meet

face to face to explain everthing, it can be Monday and Friday. Monday you explain

everthing and then they will answer their module, Friday let us assess your answer, so it

is pretty good while we are preparing for face to face again, for me that is the most

effective way of teaching our students.)

Researcher: Do you think it is effective to combine these two educational modalities? If

yes, in what way it will be effective?

limited lang but still nga, I’ll still go ahh, pro ano parin ako pro face to face pa rin ako,

because I’m also studying now in CNSC ahh taking up my masteral degree, so kahit ako

297
Ano kasi ako e more on, ano talaga ako, more

on yung nakikita ko yung professor, more on ahh interaction with your classmates, doon

aanswer, ayaw magsalita, limited yung natututunan mo, palaging brownout katulad nong

nagbagyo sunod sunod so wala na, nacut na yung learning, so how i will I know or how

will I say that I got a 100% learning from this sem ahh dito sa masteral ko. So, I feel the

situation of these learners because I’m also a learner, I’m also a student, so talagang sa

face to face pa rin ako, but if ever na hindi pa, the combination of the two would be very

helpful ahh at this time muna.

yung covid 19. (yes it is effective, there are many—you will make plans uh how to

manage ahh it is effective, like what I said if we make plans and strategies on how to, for

example limited number of students but stil, I’m still go ahh still pro face to face, because

I’m also studying now in CNSC ahh taking up my masteral degree, so even me are

having a hard time in online class, promise. I’m more on, more on interaction with

professors and classmates, because when I’m in online or virtual, the student’s answers

are limited, they do not want to talk, your learnings are also limited, it is always

brownout for example when we experienenced typhoon after typhoon, so the learning

stopped so how i will I know or how will I say that I got a 100% learning from this sem

ahh here in my masteral. So, I feel the situation of these learners because I’m also a

learner, I’m also a student, so I still choose face to face but if it is still not allowed, the

combination of the two would be very helpful ahh at this time. It is effective.)

Researcher: What do you think about the situation of your students right now? And what

do you think they are doing to cope with these sudden changes? (Ano sa iyong palagay

298

Informant: Okay, the situation I see is ahh difficult for them, ano po nahihirapan sila,

Because sabi ko nga

ganito haha so, yung focus biglang magstop, biglang maka cut. Unlike when they are in

school uhmm andon lang yung focus ano, mahirap I know they are having difficult time

in this situation uhh I would give an example na yung mga anak ko rin po ay nahihirapan

in a way that, sometimes they want na sana may teacher talagang nag ga-guide although

I’m a teacher so that’s still advantage kasi andito kami and ahh yung mommy ko rin po

teacher so ano nila yun advantage how about those children na wala talagang nag ga-

guide. So I know how difficult it is for them this situation and sabi ko nga kanina uhmm

we cannot blame if they cannot give a 100% performance don sa ano sa nangyayari, kasi

why? They are not answering na modules and almost, meron akong estudyante na with

honors siya from grade7 ha to grade 9, grade 10 na siya ngayon ahh student ko siya sa

English and nakita ko incomplete answers, ano po. Meron yung mga dapat sagutan, hindi

sinagutan which is magtataka ka kung bakit ganon e with honors sila dati, hindi sila

nakakaadapt or nakaka adjust don sa situation, nahihirapan sila, why? because they are

more on to face to face ahh setting, so yun po ang alam kung ahh problema at situation ng

mga bata. (okay, the situation I see is ahh difficult for them, the are having difficulties,

299
the adjustment is huge, maybe now, they appreciate and wish that they can personally

meet their teachers hahaha, I understand it ahh why? Because like I said when they are

in their house, they have so many responsibilities that they need to do, so their focus will

divert, for example, they are answering their modules and you mom order you to cook

rice, buy this haha so their focus would stopped. Unlike when they are in school uhmm

they can focus, I know thet are having difficult time in this situation uhh I would give an

example, my children are also having difficult time in a way that, somtime they want that

there are teachers that can guide them although I’m a teacher so that’s still advantages

for them because we are there for them and my mommy is also a teacher so that is really

their advantage, how about those children that no one can guide them. so I know how

difficult it is for themthis situation and like I said before uhmm we cannot blame if they

cannot give a 100% performance in this set up, just like those students, they are honor

students back then but now they are not why? Because they are not answering their

modules, I have a student that honor student back then, grade 7 to grade 9, she/he is now

grade 10 ah my student in English and I saw her/his modules are incomplete answers.

The activities that need to answer she/he did not answer it which is I wondered why that

student was an honor student, they could not adapt in this set up, they are having difficult

time why? Because they are more on face-to-face ahh setting, that is the problem of the

student that I’m aware with.)

Researcher: Based on the times that you are teaching; do you think that the performance

of the student’s changes?

haha, kasi mas gusto nila yung sila lang and then more on writing sila, so ito yung mga

introvert na bata, so yun namang mga bata na more on nga sa face to face, mas gusto nila

yung merong interactions, recitation and all that medyo nahihirapan, hindi sila nacha-

challenge in a way that ahh yun nga rin po ahhm we are required to attach the answer key

kasi ang sinasabi nga po ay part yan ng--- because it is called self-learning modules

kailangan daw pong I attach yung answer key as their guide ano, para mache check nila.

Unfortunately, most the student ay kinkopya nalang yung answer key tas parang nalilito

sila sa answers may vary, ano man kaya ito, oh pati yun kinokopya nila answers may vary

haha, di nila alam—kasi wala naman sakanilang nag-ga-guide, so I think it’s a good

action research and innovation also, naisip ko na rin po yan na about that innovation and

parang we have to adapt pa. uhh I know na little by little naman yan ay matututunan at

mahirapan. ( yes, huge adjustment just like I said before and there are students that they

enjoyed the modular and my co-teachers also said that they were surprised that some

students are part of honors students, so these are the introvert, they are more on writing,

written output, that is where they excel, so they are the who excel now haha because they

want to work alone and then more on wrting, those are the introvert students, while the

students that more on into face to face, they prefer interactions, recitations and all that is

why they are having hard time, they are not feel challenged in a way that ahh that is also

ahh we are required ro attached the answer key as their guide, so they can check it.

Unfortunately, most the student just copying the answers in the answer key even the

answer may vary haha, they are not aware—because there’s no one that can guide them

so I think it’s a good action research and innovation also, I also think about the

innovation and we need to orient the parents to guide their children because I noticed

that the parents do not check their children if they are doing their modules because they

check it, they would noticed why their modules are incomplete, so we neet orientation,

and we learned from our mistakes, in our shortcomings and ahh so uhmm we need huge

adjustment to make, what is that ahh we have to adapt more. uhh I know little by little,

we can learn to adjust and we must support our teachers and parents, collaboration of

these two so our children would not hava hard time in this situation)

Researcher: How these problems/changes affect their academic performance based on

the outputs they submitted/ performance shown during an online class?

mga luto luto halimbawa, pano kung wala naman ngan phone to record uhmm the how to

So, nahihirapan lahat dahil nga wala yung teacher, wala yung

talagang kumbaga they ar—we are the expert with regards to education, educating with

mga bat5a kasi nahihirapan sila but anyway uhhmm as time goes on naman ahh makaka

adjust po yan ahh kung mahihirapan man pero at least nag-I improve naman, ano. We

have to improve these problems na masolusyunan natin so, andito lang po kaming mga

teachers to help our students na hindi sila mawalan ng gana mag aral because this is for

their future pa rin so our mission is to not let them uhmm destroy their dreams of

finishing their study so continue lang po. (Like I sadi before, they are having difficulties

when it come to, how can they performe, for example, especiallt Mapeh, TLE, cooking.

Example how can they record on how to cook if they have no phone, and then science,

the experiment, if there is no teacher that can guide them so it’s tough. So, they are

suffering, we are the expert with regard to education, educating with children ang

guiding them so uhm the impact on students is ahh never mind, we cab just copy the

ansers on answer key, I don’t care about this answer may vary haha but it is good if---

303
we can create strategies and innovations to improve and solve for these existing

problems, so we are here, teachers, to help our students for them not to lose hope

because this is for their future, so our mission is to not let them uhmm destroy their

dreams of finishing their study so continue chasing their dreams.)

Researcher: What grade you currently teach? (Sa anong baitang ka kasalukuyang

nagtuturo)

Informant: So as of now, I’m currently teaching grade 12 students here in our school.

Researcher: Have you always taught at this level? (Palagi ka bang nagtuturo sa baitang

na ito?)

Informant: Yes, grade 12 STEM

304
Researcher: How long have you been teaching? (Ilang taon ka nang nagtuturo?)

Informant: 8 years

Researcher: I’d like you to think back over the first day of school in the school year

2020-2021 and analyze the situations that you encountered. (It could be positive or

negatibo.)

Informant: Currently since we are in a pandemic situation, it is very hard for us teachers

to conduct two teaching learning and process. Because we don’t have face-to-face that’s

why we are now implementing the modular and online distance learning. So, since it is

pandemic sabi ko nga napakahirap sa part ng teacher as well as sa part ng students. So

negative yun para sa ating lahat because we are not ready sa mga ganitong sitwasyon.

(Currently since we are in a pandemic situation, it is very hard for us teachers to conduct

two teaching learning and process. Because we don’t have face-to-face that’s why we are

now implementing the modular and online distance learning. So, since it is pandemic like

I said it is difficult on teacher’s part as well as on student’s part. So, it is negative for us

because we are not ready in this kind of situation.)

Researcher: What are the changes you noticed in terms of teaching style and modality

used in your school/institution?

Informant: So here in our school, since we don’t have face-to-face, we are currently

using online distance learning and the modular distance learning as a modality in learning

305
process. So, ito yung ginagamit naming currently sa school namin. (So here in our

school, since we don’t have face-to-face, we are currently using online distance learning

and the modular distance learning as a modality in learning process. So, we currently

use online distance learning in our school.)

Researcher: What are the effects of these changes on your usual teaching method utilize

before?

Informant: So the effect, I should say it is very hard parang negative sya in the part of a

teacher at saka sa students because the teacher prepares more modules. Alam nyo yung

So, it’s very

hard for us and aside from that di lng kami yung modular teacher we also have an online

class. So, we prepare also materials needed in doing our online class. Like the powerpoint

presentation, the videos, and other things/materials na maggagamit naming sa online

class. So, it is very hard kasi unlike ng face-to-face isang materials ang ihahanda mo kasi

aabot nay un hanggang hapon. So ngayon, di pwede kasi kailangan ihanda yung modules

para sa modular mo and at the same time kailangan mor in iprepare yung mga materialsor

Sa students, I think it is very hard also because sa part ng mga online class,

yes kailangan nila mag prepare, they need to prepare gadgets like computers, laptops,

cellphones, and internet connection for them to be able to attend their online class.

pagkatuto nila. And the other one, yung modular class naman mahirap din naman sa part

306
nila kasi mag-seself learning sila without the proper guidance of the teacher. Diba? So

ang hirap-hirap kasi paano nila gagawin yung mga outputs without the guidance of the

So, both ng mga

students and the teachers nahihirapan sa current situation ngayon sa new normal

MWF online class ako maghapon and TTh modular naman ako. So punong puno talaga

ang schedule naming mga teachers and oo mahirap talaga sya physically and mentally but

we are teachers and we still have to work kahit napapagod na kami dahil para rin naman

‘to sa learning ng mga bata. (So the effect, I should say it is very hard parang negative

sya in the part of a teacher at saka sa students because the teacher prepares more

modules. Do you guys know the feeling when you cannot take good rest because of

printing modules so the number of your student should be also the number of modules

you will print. So, it’s very hard for us and aside from that we are not only using modular

but we also have online class. So, we prepare also materials needed in doing our online

class. Like the power point presentation, the videos, and other things/materials that we

can use during our online class. . So, it is very hard becuasei unlike face-to-face we only

prepare one material and you can use that whole day. So now, that is not fit because you

need to prepare the modules and at the same time you also need to prepare materials

that you use in our online class. That is the hardest part for teachers. For students, I

think it is very hard also for student who chose online class because, yes, they need to

prepare, they need to prepare gadgets like computers, laptops, cellphones, and internet

connection for them to be able to attend their online class. If the internet connection is

307
poor, this can be burden for them, it can affect their learning. And the other one, the part

of modular class is also hard because they do self-learning without the proper guidance

of the teacher, right? It is difficult because how can they answer the output without the

proper guidance of the teacher, if what they have to do in modular. The teacher cannot

discuss what they need to do, so it is hard for students. So, both students and teachers are

having a hard time in this current situation in new normal education. I have schedule in

my online class and modular because MWF i have online class whole day and TTh I have

modular. So, our schedules are tight and yes, it is hard physically and mentally but we

are teachers and we still have to work even if we are exhausted because it is for learning

of the students.)

Researcher: What are the adjustments you made to cope up in the changes of teaching

style/methods in this school year?

Informant: In terms of adjustments, as teacher I need to encrypt all of the materials

needed like gadgets, strong internet connection, to have teaching learning process sa

panahon ngayon.

mo. As well as in my modular class I need also gadgets like computer, printer, so

kailangan kong iprovide yun and kailangan kong mag-adopt and attend seminars for me

to be educated if what are the things, I needed to do to manage proper learning process

para matuto yung mga estudyante. So napakarami naming dapat gawin para makapag-

cope-up sa new normal like different seminars para maeducate kami on how to assess

students.

So, there are different seminars na

308
inaattendan namin aside from providing ourselves different gadgets and materials na

kailangan magkaroon kami para makapagturo ng maayos. So yung mga seminars virtual

man yan or online man or any way basta matuto kami kung paano makapag-adjust and

makapag cope-up and makapgbigay kami ng best learning sa mga students namin. (in

terms of adjustmenr, as a teacher I need to encrypt all of the materials needed like

gadgets, strong internet connection, to have teaching learning process in this situation.

Because if I do not have these I cannot teach properly during online class. As well as in

my modular class I need also gadgets like computer, printer, so I need to provide these

and I need to adopt and attend seminars for me to be educated if what are the things, I

needed to do to manage proper learning process for students to learn. There are so many

things that I need to do to cope up in new normal like different seminars to educate us

teachers on how to assess students. Because it is really hard to assess student because

you don’t know how to grade them not just based on their output. So, there are different

seminars that we should attend and aside from providing ourselves different gadgets and

materials that we need in order to teacger them properly. So those seminars, virtual or

online or any way as long as we learned how to adjust and cope up and give the them the

best learning they deserved.)

Researcher: Suppose this pandemic end and everything back to normal, what academic

modality would you use? (The traditional one which is the face-face or the system we

used under new normal education such as online class/modular) (Kung sakaling matapos

kinagawiang face-to-face o online class/modular?)

309
Informant: So, for me, ang perception ko about this is I’d rather choose face-to-face

learning process. Why? Because yung face-to-face I can do a lot strategies kapag ka

As research teacher, it is very hard for me to teach.

paano nila ginagawa yung proseso kapag nandyan sila kapag face-to-face. As a teacher

maraming strategy na nag cocome up kapag face-to-face and mas maganda yung output.

So, I’d rather

choose face-to-face. (For me, my perception about thisis I’d rather choose face to face

learning process. Why? Because the face-to-face learning process I can do a lot of

strategies when I’m in front of my students, I become more active teacher if I can handle

my students personally especially in research because that is my subject. As research

teacher, it is very hard for me to teach. How am I going to teach them the process if they

are not in front of me. Because I prefer meeting them personally, I can see how they do

the process. As a teacher, there are so many strategies that you come up with and the

output is good. Especially the output of the students. You can guide them when we are

face to face and the student can lear more. So, I’d rather choose face to face.)

Researcher: Would you choose face-to-face? Why or why not? (Pipiliin mo ba ang face-

to-face? Bakit?)

Informant: So, it depends to the situation. Kapag nasa normal situation naman na tayo

na permitted na yung students to go out and mag-karoon na ng face-to-face, mas

310
maganda yung face-to-face.

internet connection and gadgets yung students. Pero for me, I’d rather choose the online

class because I can teach more to my students. Marami akong pwedeng maituro although

nasa pandemic tayo kasi limited lang kasi sa modular whatever the topic nan aka print

hanggang doon lang sya and hanggang doon lang ang babasahin and hanggang doon lang

ang maiinput sa estudyante. Unlike in the online class, andoon si teacher na nag-gaguide

rin virtual lang nga. But then nagguide ni teacher sya and there are some inputs na di

Kaya for me,

(So, it depends to the situation.

When we are now in normal situatition and students are permitted to go out and face to

face is allowed, face to face is still the best. But if we are in the middle of pandemic

online class is the best but it depends if the students have fast internet connection and

gadgets. But for me, I’d rather choose the online class because I can teach more to my

students. I have so many things to teach although we are in middle of pandemic, teacher

is there to guide although it is virtual. But teacher can guide their students and teachers

can add some inputs that are not in the module. So, for me, online class is okay in this

situation.)

Researcher: Do you think it is effective to combine these two educational modalities? If

yes, in what way it will be effective?

Bakit?)

Informant: Yes, it can be. Again, sabi ko naman it depends upon the situation. So, if the

students are capable to go outside and permitted by the parents, pwede naman sya mag

311
face-to-face mas maganda. And if the student is mayroon syng health condition na

maganda, let’s say the student is sick then much better na iaddopt nya na yung online or

modular. So, ayun depende talaga. More on practicality kumbaga. (yes, it can be. Again,

as I said it depends upon the situation. If the students are capable to go outside and

permitted by the parents, it is better to meet face to face. And if the student has health

condition, let’s say the student is sick then much better she/he adopt the online or

modular. So, it depends, more on practicality.)

Researcher: What do you think about the situation of your students right now? And what

do you think they are doing to cope with these sudden changes?

Informant: Okay so, I think my students is coping naman in the new normal way of

education. Kasi as teacher nakikita ko naman sa mga estudyante ko na they have

eagerness to learn even it is very hard for them natututo and nakakapagbigay naman sila

ng mga outputs. Yung mga challenges there are many challenges but then, I am very

proud as their adviser/teacher kapag natatanggap ko yung output nila okay naman and

maganda naman lahat ng output nila. (okay, so I think my students is coping in the new

normal way of education. Because as a teacher, I can see the student’s eagerness to

learn even it is hard for them, they learned and submmited their output. The challenges,

there are many challenges but then, I am very proud as their adviser/ teacher when I see

their outputs and their output is really good.)

312
Researcher: Based on the times that you are teaching; do you think that the performance

of the student’s changes?

Informant: Ahmm based on the times that I’m teaching, as a teacher upon checking their

outputs I should say na yes. Though di sya like the same na ineexpect mon a ganon

kaganda but then nakakatuwa kasi makikita mon a there is a change kasi natututo naman

sila but still nakakakita ka parin namn ng mga magagandang outputs. They are very

creative doon sa kanilang mga way of thinking sa kanilang way ng pagsusulat. In short

there is a lo of changes some are positive and some are not kase na-aaddopt narin naman

Pero if I will be asked, more on

Since, STEM ang

performance nila. (Ahmm based on the times that I’m teaching, as a teacher upon

checking their outputs I should say yes. Though they are not like the same that you expect

good grades but then I am very happy because you can see that there is a change

because they learned but still you can see that there are excellent outputs. They are very

creative when it comes to their way of thinking with their works. In short there is a lot of

changes some are positive and some are not, because they adopted the new normal. But

if I will be asked, the changes that I notice is more on positive based on their output

submitted. Since my handle is STEM, their academic performance isnot lessen based on

313
their output submitted and performance in online class because I know that they are

smart and hard-working students. Their outputs are good and they are still outstanding

during online class so I did not notice if their academic change).

Researcher: How these problems/changes affect their academic performance based on

the outputs they submitted/ performance shown during an online class?

Informant: So, it affects because some of my students kasi di naman lahat ay STEM ang

hawak ko. There are some students na medyo bumaba nga because there is no proper

guidance from the parents and of course from the teacher. There are poor outputs

submitted by the students. Di naman naiiwasan ano? Kasi di naman lahat ang strand ay

STEM, di naman lahat is magagaling, di naman lahat ay natretrain ng parents and the

teachers. That is why, yung negative na nakikita kong impact doon is they have these

poor outputs na sinasubmit nila and as teacher we need to consider such because of the

present situation. Cinoconsider nalang namin. Kasi as teacher we are not looking for the

So, kino-consider namin and natutuwa

narin kami in the way na at least nag-effort yung estudyante na mayroon din silang

eagerness to learn kahit mahirap sa kanila.

naming and lahat yan ay buong puso naming grinegradan na to be fair to the students na

nakakatruwa kasi gumagawa sila. So, ayun may mgfa poor outputs na di pumapasa doon

sa expected mo as teacher yun yung isa sa mga problema naming but it’s okay kailangan

(So, it affects because some of

314
my students not all my students are STEM. There are some students that their academic

performances change because there is no proper guidance from the parents and of

course from the teachers. There are poor outputs submitted by the students. That is not

avoidable right? Because not all students are STEM, not all students are smart, not all

students can monitor their parents and teachers. That is why, the negative impact that I

noticed is they have these poor outputs that they submitted to their teachers and as

teacher we need to consider such because of the present situation. We just consider it.

Because as a teacher we are not looking for the best output of the student because this

situation. So, we consider it and we are happy in a way that at least the make effort and

they have eagerness to learn even it is hard. So, all the output submitted by the students

though the quality is not same, we all accept them wholeheartedly and grade them fairly,

and we are happy because they comply. So, there are poor outputs that did not get in our

expectation as a teacher that one of our problems but it’s okay we need to accept

because we are not in normal situation.)
