Online Learning

Online learning involves courses offered over the internet that can be synchronous or asynchronous. It provides flexibility and accessibility to education through various technologies. There are two main types of online courses - asynchronous courses which do not meet in real-time and allow students to complete work on their own schedule, and synchronous courses which require simultaneous interaction. While online learning expands access to education, it also requires self-discipline and time management skills from students as there is less structure and interaction with instructors compared to traditional classroom learning. Overall, online learning is a valuable option that combines technology and social interaction to promote lifelong learning.

Online Learning is a term used to describe distance or correspondence courses that are

offered over the internet. The courses offered through online learning cover a wide range of
subjects and audiences.
The type of instruction that is mediated via the internet. Instruction may be synchronous
or asynchronous and various technologies can be use to mediate the process. (Dabbagh and
Bannan-Ritland, 2005).
Anytime/anywhere access to education made available through the internet.
A form of learning in which learners interact with each other and the instructor through
either asynchronous or synchronous modes of learning.

• Basic Requirements for Online Learning:

 Computer/desktop/laptop/mobile phone
 Reliable Internet
 Webcam/Mobile Camera
 Headset or earphones
 File storage

2 TYPES
OF ONLINE COURSE ACCESS

OPEN ACCESS COURSE and RESTRICTED ACCESS COURSE

OPEN ACCESS allows virtually anyone with the internet browser to view the course material.
This type of online learning does not require interaction with an instructor.

RESTRICTED ACCESS is used to limit the class to registered students. These courses offer
instructor interaction and are typically the method used by courses that require grades upon
completion.
2 TYPES
OF ONLINE LEARNING

Asynchronous Online Learning and Synchronous Online Learning

Asynchronous Online Courses

These types of course offerings do not take place in real–time. Students are provided
with content and assignments and are given a time frame to complete course work and exams.
Interaction usually takes place through discussion boards, blogs and wikis. As a result, there is
no class meeting time. Asynchronous online learning environments are effective for students
with time constraints or busy schedules.
One of the major disadvantages of asynchronous e- learning is that the student may feel
isolated or less motivated because in this process, there is no opportunity for real time
interaction with other participants.

Synchronous Online Courses

These types of course offerings require the instructor and all enrolled students to interact
online simultaneously. Similar in some ways to a webinar, participants interact through text,
video or audio chat. Synchronous learning environments enable students to participate in a
course from a distance in real time.

The only disadvantages of this type of learning is the fact that it does not offer self-paced
learning and logistics of scheduling. Moreover, it necessitates management of students’
availability at various time zones.

Five Main Reasons Behind the Growth in Online Learning:

 ACCESS
 EFFICIENCY
 STABILITY
 COST
 TECHNOLOGY

ACCESSIBILITY

It is more efficient for both the educator and the student to access course materials
online. From the educator perspective, the course lectures can be recorded once and reused.

AFFORDABILITY

Online courses allow students to complete coursework from a wide range of locations
and remove the time restriction to access course lectures.
QUALITY
The material for online courses provided by accredited educational institutions has been
carefully reviewed and approved before the course is offered.

COST EFFECTIVENESS
Due to the reduced expenses for online courses, the fees are sometimes lower than a
standard instructor-led course. Reduced course cost increases the availability of education to a
broader number of people.

UTILIZATION OF TECHNOLOGY
Technology continues to expand to meet the needs of online students. These tools
include mobile audio and video viewers, improved online interactive tests, and tool and course
management software.

DISADVANTAGES OF ONLINE LEARNING

1. Online courses require more time than on-campus classes.
2. Online courses make it easier to procrastinate.
3. Online courses require good time-management skills.
4. Online courses may create a sense of isolation.
5. Online courses allow you to be more independent
6. Online courses require you to be an active learner.
7. Online courses don't have an instructor hounding you to stay on task.
8. Online courses give you more freedom, perhaps, more than you can handle!
9. Online courses require that you find your own path to learning.
10. Online courses require you to be responsible for your own learning.

To sum it up Online learning isn’t any more about digital technologies than
classroom teaching is about chalkboards. It's about people and about using technology systems
to support constructive social interactions (human learning). E-learning will work best when
combined with the face to face experience.
