Q16 Huygens Wave Theory of Light 4


I. According to Wave theory light from a source is propagated in the form of
longitudinal waves with uniform velocity in a homogenous medium
II. To explain the propagation of waves through vacuum huygeng assumed
existence of a hypothetical medium called luminoferous ether. According to
Huygens, ether particles are present and possess properties such as inertia,
zero density and perfect transparancy.
III. On the basis of the huygens wave theory ,various colours of light are due to
different wavelengths of the light are due to different wavelengths of the
light of the waves.

Q17 How much average power over a complete cycle, does an AC source supply to a capacitor? 2

Q18 When one of the slits in Young’s experiment is covered with a transparent sheet of 2
thickness 3.6×10–3cm the central fringe shifts to a position originally occupied by the
30th bright fringe. If λ=6000Ao , find the refractive index of the sheet.

i. the resistance of the bulb

Q22 When light travels from a rarer to a denser medium, the speed decreases. Does this decrease 2
in speed imply a decrease in the energy carried by the light wave? Justify your answer.

Q24 Define surface density of electric charge. Two large conducting spheres carrying charges 2
q and Q are brought close to each other. Is the magnitude of the electrostatic force between
them exactly given by qQ / 4 εr2, where r is the distance between the spheres ?

Q26 A series of LCR circuit connected to a variable frequency 230 V source, L = 5.0 3
H, C=80μFC=80μF, R=40ΩR=40Ω

a. Determine the source frequency which drives the circuit in resonance.


b. Obtain the impedance of the circuit and the amplitude of current at the resonating
frequency.
Determine the rms potential drops across the three elements of the circuit. Show
that the potential drop across the LC combination is zero at the resonating
frequency.
Q27 For the circuit diagram of a Wheatstone bridge shown in the figure, use Kirchhoff’s laws to 3
obtain its balance condition.
Q28 A beam of monochromatic radiation is incident on a photosensitive surface. Answer the following 3
questions giving reasons:
(i) Do the emitted photoelectrons have the same kinetic energy?
(ii) Does the kinetic energy of the emitted electrons depend on the intensity of incident radiation?
(iii) On what factors does the number of emitted photoelectrons depend?

Q31 (a) Define dielectric constant in terms of the capacitance of a capacitor? On what factor does 5
the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor with dielectric depend?

(b) Find the ratio of the potential differences that must be applied across the (i)parallel (ii)
Series combination of two identical capacitors so that the energy stored in the two cases
becomes the same.

Or
(a) Derive the expression for the energy stored in a parallel plate capacitor. Hence obtain the
expression for the energy density of the electric field.
(b) A fully charged parallel plate capacitor is connected across an uncharged identical capacitor. Show
that the energy stored in the combination is less than that stored initially in the single capacitor

Q32 State Biot-Savart’s law and give the mathematical expression for it. Use law to derive the 5
expression for the magnetic field due to a circular coil carrying current at a point along its
axis. How does a circular loop carrying current behave as a magnet?

Or

(i) Using Ampere’s circuital law, obtain the expression for the magnetic field due to a long
solenoid at a point inside the solenoid on its axis.
(ii) In what respect, is a toroid different from a solenoid? Draw and compare the pattern of
the magnetic field lines in the two cases.
(iii) How is the magnetic field inside a given solenoid made strong?

Q33 (a) In Young's double slit experiment, derive the condition for 5
(i) constructive interference and
(ii) destructive interference at a point on the screen.
(b) A bream of light consisting of two wavelengths, 800nm and 600nm is used to obtain the
interference fringes in a Young's double slit experiment on a screen placed 1.4m away. If the two slits
are separated by 0.28nm, calculate the least distance from the central bright maximum where the
bright fringes of the two wavelengths coincide.

Or
Red light of wavelength 6500Å from a distant source falls on a slit 0.50mm0.50mm wide.
Calculate the distance between first two dark bands on each side of central bright band in
the diffraction pattern observed on a screen placed 1.8m from the slit.
