Nivetha and Kiro discuss the benefits and risks of social media use for teenagers. Nivetha argues that social media allows teenagers to make new friends and strengthen existing friendships. However, Kiro expresses concern that befriending strangers online could expose teenagers to risks of having personal information stolen or shared more widely. Both agree that parents should teach children to only connect with people they know in real life and use privacy settings to avoid oversharing. While social media has advantages for self-expression, the discussion concludes that safety should be the top priority for teenage users.

Nivetha: Good day, Kiro.

Today, I would like to take this opportunity to talk about social

media platforms. First and foremost, have you ever wondered what is social media?Let me
briefly explain, social media refers to any digital platform, system, website, or app that
enables people to create and share content, and connect with each other.

Kiro: Could I just ask you a quick question? What are some examples of social media?

Nivetha: Good question Kiro. Whatsapp, Instagram, Tik Tok, Wechat and Twitter are top 5
trending social media.

Nivetha: Let’s start by discussing the benefits of social media in a teenager’s life. Social
media is a way for teenagers to make new friends online and stay in touch with their friends.
Moreover, I feel that teenagers who struggle to make friends in real life can be more
confident to be outgoing with the new people they find via online chatting platforms such as
Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. What do you think about that?

Kiro: I’m sorry but I have to disagree with you. I think befriending strangers on social media
put you on risk. Sometimes, accepting request from strangers in an intention of making new
friends gives them access to your personal information. It can be very dangerous because
information like friend’s names, holiday plans, likes and dislikes can be compiled and stolen
and of course you can potentially give away more sensitive information like your phone
number and address.

Nivetha: Excuse me for interrupting. Perhaps you are right but I strongly believe that it is
important to socialize and make connections in the modern world. I strongly believe that
social media plays an important role in developing better social skills for teenagers. For
instance, teenagers would be able to strengthen the bond and have fun with their friends by
joining in on group conversations through social media.

Kiro: Well, you’ve got a point there but while talking with friends on social media, there is a
lack of connectivity since one does not meet the other person. I believe feelings when
shared in person have more impact than on social media. There is a decrease in face to face
communication which is not good. I think the feelings of care and warmth are there when the
communication is face to face.

Kiro: However, these can be prevented. Parents should teach their children to only friend
and connect with people that they know personally and remove those who they don’t know in
real life. Besides, set social media security settings so that only confirmed friends and
followers can see what you are posting. Last but not least, never post publicly or give
anyone your phone number, e-mail or house address unless you know them personally.
Nivetha: Well, I would like to conclude by saying that social media can be a means of self-
expression, a creative outlet, and an open space. Hence, I think it would be fair to say that
social media are definitely a must. Even though there are some disadvantages, I could not
imagine my life without social media. Thank you.
