Art Form Kind Description - Singkil (Lanao Del Sur) - A Folk Dance Which Depicts

Edme Jay T. Lagradilla studied various Philippine art forms in the 3rd quarter including dances, festivals, music, and literature. Some of the art forms discussed were the Singkil folk dance from Lanao del Sur, Pandango Oasiwas dance from Pangasinan, Sambali war dance from Cagayan, Balsa and Higantes festivals in Batangas and Rizal, musical instruments like the gong, guitar and kudyapi, and epic poems Ambahan from Mindoro and Hinilawod from Panay Island. Lagradilla learned about the different cultures represented by these art forms and how this knowledge can help when traveling within the Philippines.

•Singkil (Lanao del Sur) – A folk dance which depicts
the epic poem, Darangen
SINGKIL PANDANGO SAMBALI • Pandango Oasiwas (originated in Pangasinan) – A
OASIWAS Spanish fandango dance performed when
DANCE fishermencelebrate a day of good yield with the
dancers swinging and dancing while holding lighted
lamps.
• Sambali (Cagayan) – A war dance meant to depict
the fight between Christians and Non-Christians who
opposed Spanish influence performed during the
Sambali Festival

• Sambali (Cagayan) – A war dance meant to depict

SAMBALI BALSA HIGANTES opposed Spanish influence performed during the
Sambali Festival.
FESTIVAL • Balsa (Batangas) – A boat made of bamboo
decorated during the Balsa Festival in Batangas as
recognition for its significance in transport, fishing,
as well as tourism.
• Higantes (Rizal) – A giant paper mache meant to
portray farmers mocking and protesting mean
landlords when Angono was a hacienda used during
the Higantes Festival.

MUSIC GONG GUITAR KUDYAPI • Gong – A percussion musical instrument that is


usually made of metal.
• Guitar (Cebu) – A musical instrument that has 6
strings.
• Kudyapi – An instrument that looks like a boat and
has two strings.

LITERATURE AMBAHAN HINILAWOD • Ambahan (Mindoro) – A poem created by the


Hanunuo Mangyans that is chanted and often carved
on a bamboo.
• Hinilawod (Panay Island) – A 29,000-verse epic
poem about the heroes of Panay chanted for three
days; Hinilawod translates to “Tales from the Mouth
of the Halawod River”
