Case Paper - 4 - Behavioral - Shiva

Marianne demonstrates a middle-of-the-road leadership style that values relationships over tasks, while Betsy demonstrates an authority-compliance style focused more on tasks than relationships. Both Marianne and Betsy could benefit from adapting their styles to improve team dynamics. Marianne as VP should shift toward a team management style balancing relationships and tasks, while Betsy could incorporate more relationship aspects into her task-oriented approach. With these adjustments, Marianne and Betsy could work together more effectively.

1. Marianne and Betsy do indeed have different leadership styles.

What style would you ascribe to

Betsy? To Marianne?

Answer:

Following characteristics of Marianne are mentioned in the case

• She has close relationship with team members

• Likes to be called “Mentor”
• Mentions team are families
• Goes out to launch with team and also meets after work for dinner

From the behaviourial approach of leadership Marianne has employee orientation approach to
leadership. If we compare Marianne characteristics to match with leadership grid of Blake and
Mouton’s then we can find characteristics of Middle of the road Management. The character of the
“Middle of the road” manager compromises between the relationship and goal. They try to find
balance between personal relationship and production. They may sometimes give on production for
the personal relations. In the case we can see Marianne has asked Besty to go easy on changes and
criticize less to Suzanne which further matches the character of Middle of the road management.

Similarly, for Besty, following are the key characteristics mentioned in the case

• Presents desired goals to team and ask for their ideas and initiative
• Focus on task/goal more than personal relationship

From the behaviarioul approach of leadership it seems Besty has Product orientation approach to
leadership. IF we compare her characteristics to match with leadership grid of Blake and Mouton’s
then it is inclined towards Authority compliance Management. Besty is more focused towards the
task then the relationship. Suggests improvement ideas and tries to engage people on providing
ideas to change and implement them. As seen on the case Besty has asked Suzanne for changes in
Suzanne’s pet project. She does not hesitate to implement changes even at the cost of relationship.
Had see been relationship oriented she would have cautiously and smartly pushed for suggestion on
suzanne’s pet project.

2. Does Betsy need to change her leadership style to improve the situation with Bridget and
Suzanne? Does Marianne need to change her style of leadership?

Answer:

Yes. I feel both of them should change the leadership style of management. From Besty’s
perspective, It would be really difficult to work if your reporting manager is defending for your
subordinates when the task is not being done as anticipated. But, while working in a team a leader
cannot be just focused on the task. To get most out of employee they should adapt their leadership
style based on the situation. I feel Besty should adapt her leadership style to include little bit of
relationship part and follow the middle of the road management.

Marianne is the vicepresident of the firm. I personally liked her mentorship program. But her being
friendly to junior staff is undercutting the Suzanne role. As a VP she should be get better results but
has seemed to failed so from geeting best out of Suzanne and allowing employess to come office
late. As a top leader in management she should adapt her leadership style to (9,9) Team
management: Getting best out of the team with good employee relationship. If she adapts her
leadership style then the whole firm might be benefitted.

3. How can Marianne and Betsy work together?

Answer: Marainne and besty can work together if both could adapt their leadership style based on
the situation. A clear problem has been seen in the case but without both adapting their leadership
style they cannot work together. As mentioned in Q2 answer Marianne as VP should adapt her
leadership style from (5,5) to (9,9) and Suzanne can adapt from (9,1) to (5,5). Marianne’s “employee
empowerment” should not come at cost of significant employee performance. So she should be
more task focused. While Besty’s task focus is creating issues in team so she should be slightly
relationship focused. This would balance the team and get the most out of them
