Episode 1: Principles of Learning Episode 1

This episode focuses on principles of learning. The student is tasked with observing a classroom to identify practices that apply or violate these principles. These principles include setting clear expectations, active learning, personal meaning and relevance, and cooperative learning. The student will observe a class, taking notes on how the teacher applies or does not apply each principle. The student will then analyze which principles were most/least applied and how this impacted learning. Overall, the principles were generally applied, especially active learning, though allowing student presentations could have further enhanced cooperative learning. The student agrees with the principles but notes they may not always be applicable in different contexts.

My Learning Episode Overview

This Episode is centered on time-tested principles of learning which when applied
will lead to effective learning. It is good to find out the manner and the extent to which these
principles are applied in the classroom

My Intended Learning Outcome

In this episode, I must be able to identify classroom practices that apply or violate
each of the principles of learning.

My Performance Criteria
I will be rated along the following;
a. Quality of my observations and documentation,
b. Completeness and depth of my analysis,
c. Depth and clarity of my classroom observation-based reflections,
d. Completeness, organization, clarity of my portfolio and
e. Time of submission of my portfolio
My Learning Essentials
Here are time-tested principles of learning:
1. Effective learning begins with setting clear expectations and learning outcomes
2. Learning is an active process, “What I hear, I forget; What I see, I remember, what I
do, I understand.”
3. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning of ideas. Students are given the
opportunity to connect what they learn with other concepts learned, with real world
experiences and with their own lives.
4. Learning is a cooperative and a collaborative process.

My Map
To realize my Intended Learning Outcomes, I will work my way through these steps:

Step 1 : Guided by a questions, I will reflect on my experience, write

down my reflection.

Step2 : I will identify evidence of applications/ violations of the

principles of learning. ( You are given a sample in No. 1 principle). I can
cite more than one evidence per principle of learning.

Step 3 : I will observe a class.

Step 4: I will review the principles of learning given in " My Learning

Essentials".

My Learning Activities
As I observe a class, I will use the Observation Sheet for a more focused observation then
analyze and reflect on my observation with the help of guide questions.

Episode 1: Principles of Learning

My Analysis
1. Which principle/s of teaching was/were most applied?
I believe the principles of teaching that was most applied in this video is the teacher
giving a prompt feedback and encouragement of active learning.

2. Which principle of learning was least applied? Why was/ were the principles not
very much applied? Give instances where this/these principle/s could have been
applied?
As aforementioned the teacher mostly applied active learning with the students
where he lets them read out loud and give answers the same way. Also, when a
student gives a wrong answer, he calls someone else to help or add an idea to what
was previously shared. A collaborative learning activity is surely beneficial for the
students at some point to explore more ways of gathering knowledge and at the same
time it taps on their joint-learning abilities however, letting them report on their own
measures their understanding and application in whole new way.

3. How did the application of these learning principles affect learning?

The application of the learning principle mentioned will not only enhance the
students’ ability to work with a group, but it also helps those who are not actively
participating in a class discussion, to come out and contribute helpful ideas and even
get a chance to speak.

4. How did the non-application of these learning principles affect learning?

Non-application of the learning principle I mentioned above can lead to students
being too dependent on what their teacher says and makes those who are wary and
quiet stay where they are and might never learn to speak up.

5. Do you agree with these principles of learning? Or have you discovered that they are
not always, correct?
I strongly agree with this learning principle but with the recent alterations in how
our education works now, I cannot guarantee that it will always stay correct and be
relevant in all circumstance.

Episode 1: Principles of Learning

My Reflections
My reflections and lessons learned on my observations of my Resource Teacher’s/s’ application/
non-application of these principles

From what I have observed I can see that the teacher is evidently applying what is called a learner-
centered teaching. There were some important aspects in his teaching that were noteworthy but the
one that got me the most was how he adjusted his teaching pace to the learner.

Among those practices that I observed, which practices will I adopt, and which ones will I improve
on? What lessons did I learn?
I will apply the learner-centered learning wherein I will adjust my teaching to whatever the
needs of the learners will be. I will also make sure to give them time to find out the answer for
themselves and only intervene when necessary, so as not to hinder their process of learning.
A principle which I want to improve on is giving the students their own time to respond to a
question in a recitation scenario.

Practices worth adopting

The learner-centered teaching, group activities/discussions and small presentation/reporting
to gauge their learning of the subject matter.

Practices to avoid and to improve on

I should really avoid interrupting students of their “thinking or pondering time” after a
question was asked, since they might never share what they have to say if I keep interrupting
and will just end up being too dependent of my own opinion rather than trusting on their
own.

Lessons Learned (Feel free to write your reflections outside the given questions)
Though the principles of teaching vary from situation to situation, there is a general rule of thumb
when it comes to quality teaching, that is the learner centered. The difference in the learning
atmosphere when that principle is being practiced is too great compared to one that does not. As I
observed in the video, I cannot say I did not learn anything from that teacher.

My Learning Portfolio
You may wish to state the principles of learning in your own words or illustrate each
with diagrams. Feel free to choose how!

Principles of Learning in my Own Words

“As students enter a classroom, they

gradually gain sovereignty over what,
when, and how they study and learn.
Motivation plays a crucial role in
directing the focus, strength, diligence,
and value of the learnings in which they
participate. When students find definite
significance in a learning goal or activity,
we can expect to behold a desired
learning outcome and when
accompanied by a constant amount of
support from their teachers, they are
likely to be strongly inspired to learn.”
