Guided Noteboo Kin GED10 2 (Mathe Matics in The Modern World)

Week 2 focuses on mathematical language, including binary operations and logic. Key concepts covered include the definition, theorem, and proof that make up the rhetoric of mathematical language. The characteristics of the mathematical language are described as being comprehensive, concise, precise, and powerful. Sets, relations, functions, and binary operations are also discussed. Binary operations like addition and multiplication have properties like closure, associativity, commutativity, identity, distribution, and symmetry.

Lesson 4. Mathematics as a Language

Highlights

A. Describe the rhetoric of the mathematical language. 5 POINTS

- The Rhetoric of Mathematical Language encompasses three components

namely definition, theorem, and proof. Definition is the written description

of the discipline applied. Theorem is a chain of logical proof of mathematical

language with the help of mathematical laws. Proof is the actual application

of mathematical language.
4TH QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 2

B. What are the characteristics of the mathematical language? Enumerate and

describe each. 9 POINTS

• Comprehensive – it has a set of vocabulary and parts of speech such

as nouns, pronouns, verbs, connectives, and punctuations.

• Concise - it is non-ambiguous, never rambles extraneous or

unnecessary information.

• Precise – it is systematic. It uses symbols to make it accurate and

exact.

• Powerful – it can be applied in each and every field such as Physics,

Economics, Biology, Engineering, and other fields are stated in the

language of mathematics.

• Non-Temporal – it has no tense of verbs.

C. What are the parts of speech of the mathematical language? 5 POINTS

- The parts of speech of the mathematical language are the nouns which are
numbers, pronouns which are variables, verbs which are relation symbols,
and punctuations which are grouping symbols as well as the operations in a
formula or function.

D. Give three examples of each of the following: (i) mathematical expression, (ii)
mathematical sentence 6 POINTS

Mathematical Expressions

• 1011 + 1129
• 9x – y + z
• √𝟒𝒙 + 𝟏𝟔y

Mathematical Sentence
• 4x = 20
• 11 + 31 = 42
4TH QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 2

• √𝟏𝟐𝟏 = 11

Lesson 5. Sets, Relations and Functions

Highlights

A. What is a set? 5 POINTS

- In mathematics, a set is a very much characterized assortment of particular
items, considered as an article in its own right. The plan of the items in the set
doesn't make a difference. A set might be indicated by setting its articles
between a couples of curly braces.

B. Let A and B be subsets of a universal set U. Give the theoretical definition of the
following: 12 POINTS
1. Union of A and B
- is the set of all those elements which belong either to A or to B or both A
and B
2. Intersection of A and B
- is the set containing all elements of A that also belong to B (or equivalently,
all elements of B that also belong to A.
3. Complement of A
- the complement of a set A refers to elements not in A.
4. A – B
- a set that contains elements found in A that is not in B.
5. B – A
- a set that contains elements found in B that is not in A.
6. A x B
- the product of subset A and B. A set that contains all possible
ordered pairs using the elements of A as the first part of the ordered
pair and elements of B as the second part.
4TH QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 2

C. What is a function? 5 POINTS

- A technical definition of a function is: a relation from a set of inputs to a set of
possible outputs where each input is related to exactly one output.

D. What are the ways of writing a function? 8 POINTS

 A function can be represented verbally. For example, the circumference of a

square is four times one of its sides.

 A function can be represented algebraically. For example, 3x+6 3 x + 6 .

 A function can be represented numerically.

 A function can be represented graphically

Lesson 6. Binary Operations

Highlights

A. What is a binary operation? 5 POINTS

- The basic operations of mathematics- addition, subtraction, division
and multiplication are performed on two operands.

B. What are the properties of a binary operation? Enumerate and explain each.
10 POINTS

• Closure Property – a set is closed for the specific binary operation if

the operation can be completed with the elements in the set.
• Associative Property – changing the arrangement of the parenthesis in the
formula will not have an effect in the result.
4TH QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 2

• Communicative Property – changing the order of the elements in the

function will not affect the result.
• Identity Property – any number subjected to multiplied/divided by one (1)
or added/subtracted to zero (0) keeps its identity.
• Distributive Property – the distribution of element into a grouped element
will yield the same answer as the undistributed equation.
• Symmetric Property – this property is seen if one equation is equation
another distinct equation.
