QUESTION 5.3:
(a) Specific the function of retaining wall and describe the compulsory elements that should
be designed for a retaining wall to retain well-drained soil with depth more than 5 m.
(b) A cantilever wall as shown in figure below support a bank earth 5.0 m height. The soil
behind the wall has density of 1900 kg/m3 with angle of internal friction of 30º. Given the
following data:
(i) Determine the total horizontal load, vertical load and moment of the retaining wall.
(ii) Check the soil pressure at the toe of retaining wall.
(iii) Predict the ability of retaining wall toward stability against overturning, resistance
to sliding and settlement.
(iv) Design the bending reinforcement using bar diameter=20mm, cover=45mm.

QUESTION 5.4:
(b) Figure below shows a cross section of a retaining wall. The surcharge of 2.0 kN/m2 is
imposed to the backfill behind the wall. The soil has a density, γ = 18 kN/m3, angle of
internal friction, ϕ = 32o and cohesion, c = 0. The material under the wall has a safe bearing
pressure 80 kN/m2, friction coefficient is 0.5 and concrete density is 25 kN/m3.
(i) Determine the total horizontal load, vertical load and moment of the retaining wall.
(ii) Check for stability of the wall against overturning, sliding and settlement. Partial
safety factor as shown in Table 1. Give your reason and comment if the stability is
not adequate.
(iii) Design the bending reinforcement if heel length is assumed 2500mm, by using high-
yield steel, fyk=500 N/mm2, fck=30 N/mm2, bar diameter=20mm, cover=45mm.
