Periodic Trends Assignment

The document provides information about atomic radius and ionization energy trends across the periodic table. It includes a legend describing elements on a graph and 5 questions with multi-sentence answers explaining that atomic radius decreases and ionization energy increases moving left to right across a row, while atomic radius increases and ionization energy decreases moving down a column. Estimates are provided for the atomic radius and ionization energy of Manganese and Selenium based on their positions on the graph.

Use your graphs to answer each question completely in full sentences:

1. What is the general trend for atomic radius as you move across a row? Explain
why this is so. (2)

If you move from left to right, the atomic radius of the atoms decreases. There are a
few small variations, with the oxygen radius being slightly greater than the
nitrogen radius. Over a period of time, protons are added to the nucleus and
electrons are added to the same principal energy level. This is caused by an
increase in the number of protons and electrons over time.

2. What is the general trend for atomic radius as you move down a column?
Explain why this is so. (2)

When you move down a group, the number of energy levels increases as the
number of electrons increases. Each following energy level is further from the
nucleus than the one before it. As a result, the atomic radius expands as the
population and energy levels expand.

3. What is the general trend for ionization energy as you move across a row?
Explain why this is so. (2)

Ionisation energy normally increases as you travel through the row from left to right
across an element time. This is because as the atomic radius decreases over
time, the powerful attraction between negatively charged electrons and positively
charged nuclei becomes greater.

4. What is the general trend for ionization energy as you move down a column?
Explain why this is so. (2)

The ionization energy decreases as we move through the groups. Since the
outermost electron is on average farther away from the nucleus, it is held closer
to the nucleus and requires less energy to detach.
5. Estimate the atomic radius and ionization energy for elements 25 and 34 using
your graph. (2)
