Green Buildings: - Submitted To - Submitted by

This document discusses green buildings and their design principles. It defines green buildings as those that reduce negative environmental impacts through their design, construction, operation, and maintenance. Key aspects of green building design discussed include building orientation, solar shading, use of sustainable and recycled materials, window-wall ratios, efficient lighting and water systems, renewable energy, and waste management. The document also outlines the World Green Building Council and India's Green Building Council, and notes that while initial costs may be higher, green buildings are more economical over the long term due to reduced resource consumption and operational costs.

Introduction -
• It is a building that, in its design, construction, operation, maintenance,
renovation & reconstruction, reduces or eliminates negative impacts
and can create positive impacts on our climate and environment.
• Also known as Green Construction or Sustainable Building.
• Preserves natural resources.
• Improves quality of life.
Significance
• Environment friendly Design.
• Reduction of negative impact on human health.
• Energy efficiency.
• Water efficiency.
• Indoor air quality.
• Operation & maintenance optimization.
• Waste management & reduction.

building.
• Shading devices are designed to get a minimum exposure of the sun in summer
while allowing the winter sun inside the space.

•Some solar shading elements can be trees, hedges, overhangs, vertical fins, low-
shading coefficient glass, blinds, and louvers.

• It assures maximum usage of resources .
• Determines the energy performance of the building.

• Windows causes 2 times more energy loss than the wall

so the size and number of windows should be designed
according to climatic conditions.
7. Efficient lightning 8. Water efficiency

• Energy-efficient lightning-like CFLs or LEDs should be used • Water-conserving plumbing fixtures can be used to reduce

• It reduces energy consumption & heat pollution. • Recycled gray water can be utilized for toilet flushing and
gardening etc.

chimneys to cool the inside temperature can be used.
• Tumbler compost bin can be used for making compost.
• We can use wind energy also to generate electricity.
• You can reuse or handover the recyclable waste to the
organizations that deals with recycling processes.

World
Green
Building
Council -
• It is a non-profit
organisation and global
network of national Green
Building Councils
(GBCs).
• Its mission is to create &
encourage everyone for
green buildings .
• It has member councils in
over 70 countries
worldwide,
Concept of GREEN
BUILDING in India -
• IGBC is a non-profit organization, Formed in
2001.
• The council aims to promote a green building
movement in India to facilitate the country to
become one of the global leaders in green
buildings.

• It has different rating system for different type of

building-
• IGBC Green Homes Rating.
• IGBC Green Factory Rating.
• IGBC Green Townships etc.
Advantages of Green Buildings
• Environment friendly as it follows REDUCE, REUSE and Recycling.
• Use of non-toxic and sustainable materials causes better health environment.
• Efficient use of energy, water and other natural resources.
• Use of renewable energy such as solar energy, wind energy.
• Minimum Wastage Maximum Reuse, less pollution.
• Good indoor air quality
• Increases quality of life.
• Less operational & maintenance cost than normal building.

Conclusion -
• Every year, 2.01 billion ton of
municipal waste is
generated worldwide every year.
• Initially cost of Green Building is
more than normal building but in long
run it'll be economical.
• Green building is best way to reduce
resource consumption.
