ICTC 4102.3 Mobile Wireless Network
a) Explain one positive and one negative feature in IEEE 802.11n standard compared to other
(IEEE 802.11 b/a/g) standards. (5 marks)
b) State and explain the critical factors causing propagation path loss in wireless. (5 marks)
c) “Power Management is one of the key challenges in wireless networks” Describe how Ad-
hoc and infrastructure networks manage power. (5 marks)
a) What are the differences between carrier sensing in the 802.11 and 802.3? (3 marks)
b) What service is provided by RTS/CTS in IEEE 802.11? (5 marks)
c) What is Spread Spectrum Technology? Explain the two types of it. (5 marks)
d) Consider two users (A and B) in an IEEE 802.11 WLAN system. If back off delay is needed,
user A chooses 3 mini-slots for the back off and user B chooses 4 mini-slots for the back off,
respectively. The contention window consists of 10 mini-slots. Here we assume the packet
size is constant and the time needed for sending a packet is 10 mini-slots. We also have the
following relationships: SIFS=1 mini-slot, DIFS=3 SIFSs, PIFS=2 SIFSs. The time needed
for sending an RTS, CTS, or ACK is 2 mini-slots.
I. Here we use mini-slot as time unit. Assume the time interval from 0 to 10 is CFP period
and both users are not polled during the CFP period. A unicast packet is ready for
transmission at user A at time 10. A broadcast packet is ready for transmission at user
B at time 15. User A uses CSMA/CA with RTS/CTS access method for transmission
and user B adopts basic CSMA/CA method for sending packets during contention
period. Draw the timing diagram of this scenario. (10 marks)
II. What is the delay experienced for the packet at user A? (2 marks)

a) Explain the frequency-reuse concept in GSM with the aid of a diagram. (4 marks)
b)
i. What does it mean by Hand off in mobile communication? (3 marks)
ii. Compare different types of Handoffs in mobile communication. (2 marks)
c) What are the basic BTS configurations used in mobile network designs? Explain each with a
aid of a diagram. (6 marks)
d) By using Okumura-Hata model determine the path loss of a 1800MHz cellular system
operating in a large city from a base station with the height of 100m and mobile station installed
in a vehicle with the antenna height of 6 meters, distance between mobile station and base
station is 6 Km. (15 marks)
Appendix A
Path loss prediction of the Okumura-Hata model for Marco-cellular path loss (L).
L= 69.55 + 26.16 log10(f) - 13.82 log 10(Hb) - a(Hm) + [44.9 - 6.55log10(Hb)] log10(d)
Where f is frequency, Hb is the base station antenna height, a(Hm) is the mobile antenna correction
factor, and d is the distance between the BTS and MS.
