Narrative Report on Tobacco Control and Anti-Smoking
Smoking is a leading cause of diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular
disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and health in the country. This is due to the
presence of over 70 carcinogens or cancer-causing ingredients, including asbestos, arsenic, and
polonium in a cigarette stick. Smoking-related illnesses and deaths, however, are highly
preventable.
Research has shown that 90 percent of smokers start at a young age due to exposure to
cigarette marketing in media, tobacco industry-sponsored activies, neighborhood stores, family
members who smoke, and peer pressure. It has been found that young people are three times
more vulnerable to smoking than adults. The Philippines Global Youth Tobacco Survey of 2011
(GYTS), a school based national survey, showed that 13.7 percent of students are currently using
tobacco products. This was projected to increase in the coming year.
The result of the survey became a wake-up call to the Department of Education (DepED)
as well as the Department of Health (DOH) thus coming up with a program to address the said
the dilemma. The said program was imposed to public schools within the country to foster
awareness to the students, school personnel as well as its stakeholders by making the month of
June every school as National No Smoking Month.
San Roque Elementary School accepted the challenge of educating these young minds
entrusted to us. The program was launched during the second week of June. The students, school
personnel, and parents were informed with regards the ill effects of cigarette smoking towards
ones health. The school conducted the educational and information drive through integrating the
program to their discussions especially during Science and Mapeh period. Film viewings also
became instruments in making the younger pupils namely the kindergarten up to grade 3 pupils
why smoking is very dangerous towards ones health. Parents and stakeholders were also
informed during the assembly thus making them aware of the campaign. They were informed
that smoking within 100- meter perimeter of the school will be prohibited because studies
showed that people who were exposed to people who smoke were greatly affected rather than the
smokers themselves. Students, school personnel, parents and stakeholders were asked by the
school to help in the campaign by encouraging other people in their families to stop smoking to
prolong their lives as well as the people around them. Let us remember that “Our bodies are our
priceless possessions so let us take care of it.”
