Thesis Adviser's Guide

This document provides a guide for chapters 1-3 of a thesis. Chapter 1 should include an introduction, statement of the problem, conceptual framework, hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitations, and definition of terms. Chapter 2 is a review of related literature grouped by variable and sources no earlier than 2009. Chapter 3 describes the research methodology, including the research design, respondents, data gathering instruments, procedures, and appropriate statistical treatments. The guide provides detailed recommendations for the content and organization for each section.

THESIS ADVISER’S REVIEW GUIDE

CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background of the Study
- Clearly state what the problem is in relation to the topic; background as to results
and implications of previous works leading to the rationale of the study.
- What was done in the present study, urgency, research gap, assumption,
reconnection of IV/s with DV; contribution of the study.
1.2. Statement of the Problem
- Complementary within research method
- Must have a general and specific Objectives
- One objective for each variable & another objective on significant relationship/
difference/ influence/ prediction/ impact, and other related objectives
1.3. Conceptual/Theoretical Framework
- Conceptual Framework is needed when there are inferences (relationship,
differences) stated in the statement of the study. Conceptual figure alone in one
page right after the page citing it. Source/ Author for every variable with indicators.
Only one author for every variable, not several authors
- Theoretical framework will be formulated from an existing theory/ies serves as the
foundation of the study. In such case, the paradigm that is originally used by the
theorist can be fully adopted in the present study. It can also be adapted since that
researcher can add or subtract variables from the original framework, provided the
whole theory is utilized.
1.4. Hypothesis
- Needed when there are inferences (relationship, differences) stated in the
statement of the study
- One of each objective on difference/ relationship/ influence/ prediction/ impact/
whichever is applicable
1.5. Significance of the Study
- Possible beneficiaries and the benefits they will gain from the study clearly stated
- The sequence of the beneficiaries of the research starts from the most benefited
to the least benefited. The benefits must be specific and arranged according to the
degree of significance.
1.6. Scope and limitation
- The scope is the coverage of the study while delimitation pertains to the
boundaries of the study.
- You should set what should be the boundary or limit of the issues or concerns,
who are your target subjects or participants (respondents), period or time covered,
the place to focus and what data you are going to use, quantitative, qualitative or
combination of both.
1.7. Definition of Terms
- Only the keywords in the title are define operationally, how they are used in the
study

CHAPTER II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

- Introductory Paragraph: variable based with indicators with sources
- Grouped by variable of the study and relationship of variables (or difference,
impact, influence whichever is applicable)
- Coherence between & among paragraph by using appropriate transition terms
- Only the variables are listed and labeled as sub-headings; indicators are part of
the paragraph
- Sources not earlier than 2009 (10 years); except for those theories and very
important authors.
- Paraphrased, not copy pasted
- Synthesis as last paragraph of RRL, a general summary (not conclusion) & last
sentence is contribution to the study;
- An inventory of three or more authors, arranged in alphabetical order, of a
particular concept present in majority of the pages
- Use APA format for referencing

CHAPTER III. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

- Opening paragraph introducing the content of the entire chapter
3.1. Research Design
- Appropriate design used, with author; justification for its use & contextualized to
the study (e.g. quantitative non-experimental design, quantitative experimental
design)
3.2. Respondents of the Study
- Description of population of the study and respondents is clear (nature of work,
lifestyle, & other profile)
- Sampling procedure & its justification for use supported with author
- Chart on the Distribution of Respondents or Profile of respondents after the page
citing it; could be a direct discussion with no supporting chart if there are only
very few items.
- Description of the locale of the study
3.4. Data Gathering Instrument
- Source/ Author, Cronbach Alpha/ Average validation rating
- If researcher- made, pre-testing procedure discussed & its reliability. N/A if not
applicable
- Source/ Author, Cronbach Alpha/ Average validation rating
3.5. Data Gathering Procedure
- Paragraph form
- Explained in detail (from asking permission to collation of date; focus:
experiences)
3.6. Statistical Treatment
- Enumeration the appropriate statistics to be used based on the statement of
the problem

Module of the University.
