HARDWARE COMPONENTS:
Computer Hardware is the physical part of a computer, as distinguished from the computer
software that executes or runs on the hardware. The hardware of a computer is infrequently changed,
while software and data are modified frequently. The term soft refers to readily created, modified, or
erased. These are unlike the physical components within the computer which are hard.

MOTHERBOARD: The motherboard is the body or mainframe of the computer, through

which all other components interface. It is the central circuit board making up a complex
electronic system. A motherboard provides the electrical connections by which the other
components of the system communicate. It supplies the main activity and instructions to the
other hardware components.
HARD DISK DRIVE: A hard disk drive (HDD) is a non-volatile storage device which stores
digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating platters with magnetic surfaces. Just about every
new computer comes with a hard disk these days unless it comes with a new solid-state drive.
Typical desktop hard disk drives store between 120 and 400GB, rotate at 7,200 rpm, and have
a media transfer rate of 1 Gbit/s or higher. Hard disk drives are accessed over one of a
number of bus types, including parallel ATA (also called IDE), Serial ATA (SATA), SCSI, Serial
Attached SCSI, and Fiber Channel. But nowadays this comes with 1TB storage= 1000GB.
DVD ROM: Digital versatile disc-read only memory (DVD-ROM) is a read-only digital
versatile disc (DVD) commonly used for storing large software applications. It is similar to a
compact disk-read only memory (CD-ROM) but has a larger capacity. A DVD-ROM stores
around 4.38 GB of data. A CD-ROM usually stores 650 MB of data.
RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY: Random access memory (RAM) is fast-access memory that is
cleared when the computer is power-down. RAM attaches directly to the motherboard, and is
used to store programs that are currently running. RAM is a set of integrated circuits that
allow the stored data to be accessed in any order (why it is called random). There are many
different types of RAM.
GRAPHICS CARD AND MEMORY: A graphics card, also known as a video card, is a piece of
hardware installed in a computer that is responsible for rendering the image on the
computer’s monitor or display screen.
POWER SUPPLY: The power supply as its name might suggest is the device that supplies
power to all the components in the computer. Its case holds a transformer, voltage control,
and (usually) a cooling fan. The power supply converts about 100-120 volts of AC power to
low-voltage DC power for the internal components to use.
FLOPPY DISK: A floppy disk is a type of data storage that is composed of a disk of thin,
flexible (“floppy”) magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell.
Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive. Floppy disks are a dying and being
replaced by the optical and flash drives.
USB FLASH DRIVE: A flash drive is a small storage device that can be used to transport files
from one computer to another. They are slightly larger than a stick of gum, yet many of
these devices can carry all homework for an entire year.
KEYBOARD: The keyboard is the piece of computer hardware used to input text, characters
and other commands into a computer or similar device. Modern computer keyboards were

modeled after, and are still very similar to, classic typewriter keyboards. Many
different keyboard layouts are available around the world but most keyboards are of
the QWERTY type.
MOUSE: The mouse is an input device designed to manipulate objects on the computer
screen. Computer mice come in many shapes and sizes but are all designed to fit either the
left or right hand. Anywhere from one to six or more buttons, and usually a scroll wheel, are
integrated onto the mouse to provide a wide variety of functions.
SPEAKERS: A speaker is a term used to describe the user who is giving vocal commands to
a software program.  A hardware device connected to a computer's sound card
that outputs sound generated by the computer.
UPS (UNINTERRUPTED POWER SUPPLY): Short for Uninterruptible Power Supply, UPS is
a hardware device that provides a backup power source in case of a power outage
(blackout), brownout, or a surge in power. A UPS provides enough power for a computer(s)
to shut down properly or remain functional during the outage. There are three versions of
the UPS: standby, on-line and line interactive. The picture shows an APC battery backup
power strip.
PRINTER: A printer is an external hardware device responsible for taking computer data
and generating a hard copy of that data. Printers are one of the most used peripherals on
computers and are commonly used to print text, images, and photos.
SCANNER; With hardware a scanner or optical scanner is a hardware input device that
allows a user to take an image or text and convert it into a digital file, allowing the computer
to read or display the scanned object. A scanner can be connected to a computer
using USB, Fire wire, Parallel, or a SCSI port.
MONITOR:  Monitor is a term to describe the process of viewing or watching over someone
or something.  Alternatively referred to as a video display terminal (VDT) and video display
unit (VDU), a monitor encompasses a display screen for video images and casing that
holds it.
