The similarities and Differences between Narrative and Descriptive Writing:

Similarities:
In both essay styles, the author follows the same format. From the introduction to the
conclusion, there will be not much of a difference. You might realise that the differences are
not in the structure – which stays the same overall. They are mostly in the content and in what
is being written about. In both styles, the author must include a thesis statement that signifies
what the moral might be and why this story interests the order.

Differences:
In descriptive essays, the introduction is much different from the narrative essay. In descriptive
ones, the author tells the audience what the subject to be discussed is. This is because the
author needs to start building on the subject. However, in narrative essays, the author never

reveals the plain plot of the story as it is built throughout the story. This leaves it clouded in
mystery and urges the reader to read on.

As we mentioned earlier, narrative essays most often use the first-person point of view,
whereas descriptive essays use the third-person view. The first person is used in narrative
essays because it gives the reader a sense of identity and character.

The one main structural difference between these two essay styles is that, in narrative essays,
you can keep the paragraph as short as you want. This can be as less as two lines but in
descriptive essays, long paragraphs area must. You must write a long paragraph as you can
get in more detail and be able to describe more in them.

Finally, in the conclusion, the author must quickly wrap up the story in a narrative essay.
However, in descriptive essays, the author can give a long and detailed conclusion in which
they slowly build towards the ending.

Identify with evidence, the types of the following write-up (Oral discussion)

Gregory
by Barbara Carter

Gregory is my beautiful gray Persian cat. He walks with pride and grace, performing a dance of
disdain as he slowly lifts and lowers each paw with the delicacy of a ballet dancer. His pride,
however, does not extend to his appearance, for he spends most of his time indoors watching
television and growing fat. He enjoys TV commercials, especially those for Meow Mix and 9
Lives. His familiarity with cat food commercials has led him to reject generic brands of cat food
in favor of only the most expensive brands. Gregory is as finicky about visitors as he is about
what he eats, befriending some and repelling others. He may snuggle up against your ankle,
begging to be petted, or he may imitate a skunk and stain your favorite trousers. Gregory does
not do this to establish his territory, as many cat experts think, but to humiliate me because he

is jealous of my friends. After my guests have fled, I look at the old fleabag snoozing and
smiling to himself in front of the television set, and I have to forgive him for his obnoxious, but
endearing, habits………

Aunt Sophia

I remember when I first arrived in the United States. Even before the plane landed, the little
windows in the airplane revealed snow and ice-covered houses and buildings. As I walked off
the plane, cold air crept though the corrugated ramp that led to the airport terminal. Some
people inside the airport were wearing big coats and hats, which I had seen on television, but
never up close. I felt a little dizzy and needed to sit down, and then my cell phone rang. It was
my Aunt Sophia. She was waiting for me outside in the passenger pick-up area, so I walked
quickly to the exit, forgetting all about my luggage. When the sliding glass door opened to the
outside, there was my aunt--a woman I hadn't seen in over ten years--wearing a parka and
waving her arms frantically in my direction………..

Descriptive Writing
Gregory
The writer here focuses less on the physical appearance of her pet than on
the cat's habits and actions. Notice how many different descriptors go into just
the sentence about how the cat walks: emotions of pride and disdain and the
extended metaphor of the dancer, including the phrases the "dance of
disdain," "grace," and "ballet dancer.“

Personification is an effective literary device for giving lifelike detail to an

inanimate object or an animal, and Carter uses it to great effect. Look at how
much time she spends on the discussions of what the cat takes pride in (or
doesn't) and how it comes across in his attitude, with being finicky and
jealous, acting to humiliate by spraying, and just overall behaving obnoxiously.

Still, she conveys her clear affection for the cat, something to which many
readers can relate.

Narrative Writing
Aunt Sophia

The narrative has a storyline that involves plot, characters, setting etc.

The topic sentence in this paragraph is the first sentence, ”I remember when I
first arrived in the United States”. The supporting sentences that follow should
be about this experience and how it is still remembered. The concluding
sentence in this kind of a paragraph would lead to the action in the next
paragraph.
The sequence of activity can be implied or reassembled by the reader as
demonstrated in this paragraph.
