2. RECODE
3. DESCRIPTIVE
4. FREQUENCY
HOW TO USE “EXPLORE”:
1. TO USE THE “EXPLORE FUNCTION, CLICK ANALYZE> DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS> EXPLORE

Then, this window will pop-up:

2. PUT THE VARIABLE YOU WISH TO ANALYZE ON THE “DEPENDENT LIST” BOX
3. CHOOSE THE DESIRED STATISTICS

The “statistics” option allows you to choose what type of statistics to show.

Descriptive shows descriptive statistics ( mean, confidence interval for the mean, median,
variance, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, range, interquartile range (IQR), skewness,
kurtosis, and standard errors for the mean, skewness and kurtosis
M-estimators option produces alternatives to the mean and median
Outliers  prints the 5 highest and lowest value and cases in which they’re involved with.
Percentiles  produces the percentiles of the data.

4. CHOOSE THE DESIRED PLOTTING OPTION UNDER THE “PLOTS”.

5. CLICK “OK” TO SEE THE RESULTS.

HOW TO RECODE:
1. TO RECODE INTO DIFFERENT VARIABLES, CLICK TRANSFORM> RECODE INTO DIFFERENT
VARIABLES.

Then this window will pop up:

2. DOUBLE CLICK THE VARIABLE YOU WISH TO RECODE. UNDER THE “INPUT -> OUTPUT
VARIABLE” ARE VARIABLES YOU’VE SELECTED TO RECODE.

3. TYPE THE NAME AND LABEL FOR YOUR NEW RECODED VARIABLE IN THE TEXT FIELD UNDER
THE “OUTPUT VARIABLE”. THEN CLICK CHANGE. THE CENTER BOX WILL NOW DISPLAY THE
NAMES OF THE ORIGINAL AND NEW VARIABLE.
4. CLICK THE “OLD AND NEW VALUES” TO SPECIFY HOW YOU WISH TO RECODE THE VALUES FOR
THE SELECTED VARIABLE.

5. Click “OK” TO VIEW RESULT.

The procedure for Recoding into same variables (Transform >  Recode into Same Variables) is the same.
Except any changes made to the variable will be permanent.
HOW TO RUN DESCRIPTIVE:
1. TO RUN THE DESCRIPTIVE PROCEDURE, CLICK ANALYZE> DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS>
DESCRIPTIVES.

2. TO SELECT THE VARIABLES, CLICK THE VARIABLE NAME ON THE LEFT SIDE, THEN CLICK THE
ARROW TO MOVE IT INSIDE THE BOX. YOU MAY ALSO DOUBLE CLICK THE NAME OF THE
VARIABLE TO MOVE IT INSIDE THE BOX.
3. CLICK “OPTIONS” TO CHOOSE THE DESIRED DESCRIPTIVE RESULTS. BY DEFAULT, THE
DESCRIPTIVES COMPUTES THE MEAN, STANDARD DEVIATION, MINIMUM, AND MAXIMUM OF
THE VARIABLE. UNDER THE “ OPTIONS”, YOU MAY ENABLE OR DISABLLE THE MENTIONED
STATISTICS.

Under the “display order”, you can choose how you want the output to be illustrated.

 Variable list- will print the variables in the same order as the ones in the descriptives window.
 Alphabetically- arrangement of variables in alphabetical order.
 Ascending means- variables with the lowest mean as first and variables with the largest means
are last.
 Descending means- variables with the largest mean as first and variables with the lowest means
are last.
HOW TO CREATE CROSSTABS:
1. TO CREATE A CROSSTAB, CLICK ANALYZE> DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS> CROSSTABS.

2. ENTER THE VARIABLES TO BE CROSSTABS ON EACH AREAS (ROWS AND COLUMNS)

3. UNDER THE “STATISTICS” WINDOW, YOU MAY CHOOSE THE DESIRED INFERENTIAL STATISTICS
OPTION FOR COMPARING VARIABLES.
4. CLICK CELLS TO CHOOSE WHICH OUTPUT TO DISPLAY IN EACH CELL OF THE CROSSTAB.
.

5. CLICK FORMAT TO SPECIFY THE ROW ORDER OF THE TABLE (ASCENDING OR DESCENDING).

6. CLICK “OK” TO SEE RESULTS.

HOW TO RUN FREQUENCY:
1. TO RUN THE FREQUENCIES PROCEDURE, CLICK ANALYZE > DESCRITIVE STATISTICS >
FREQUENCIES

2. DOUBLE CLICK THE NAME OF THE VARIABLE YOU WANT TO PRODUCE FREQUENCIES OUTPUT.

3. CLICK “STATISTICS” TO CHOOSE WHAT DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS TO INCLUDE.

4. CLICK “CHARTS” TO CHOOSE FROM DIFFERENT GRAPHICAL OPTIONS.
Options include bar charts, pie charts, and histograms. For categorical variables, bar charts and
pie charts are appropriate. for continuous variables, Histogram should be used.

5. UNDER THE “FORMAT” WINDOW CONTAINS OPTIONS FOR SORTING THE TABLE OUTPUT.

 Ascending values arranges the rows in increasing order

 Descending values arranges the rows in decreasing order with respect to the category values.
 Ascending counts orders the rows from lowest count to highest count.
 Descending counts orders the rows highest count to lowest count.
6. CLICK “OK” TO SEE RESULTS.
