Tyler's Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction
Tyler's Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction
It is vital for school curriculums to have good grounding on the basic principles of
curriculum and instruction is. In this paper, I will discuss how the institution I am affiliated
with abides with Tyler’s discussion on Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction by
answering the following questions: What educational purposes should the school seek to
attain?, How can learning experiences be selected to attain these objectives?, How can
learning experiences be organized for effective instruction?, and How can the effectiveness
of learning experiences be evaluated?
The Our Lady of Fatima University aims to be the school of choice for person-centered
preparatory, primary and secondary education. By school of choice, the department aims to
be known for its excellence in academic and extracurricular activities where students find
themselves relevant to the society they belong with. The Department envisions to mentor,
guide and inspire learners in shaping their skills, intelligences and behavior to achieve their
fullest potential as local and global citizens.
With these objectives, learning experiences are selected by responding to the two
most important things in its mission, to encourage the importance of excellence, and push
students to their best potential towards becoming global citizens. The department
prioritizes the readiness of students before they become exposed to the real-life setting by
offering I ahead program which is 3 day career immersion of students setting of courses
available in the department, and Alternative Class day, where in students attend classes not
in their subject classes but in different interests such as; Guitar Playing, First aid Training,
Biologists, and Housekeeping Trainings. . The department coordinates with colleges of the
university to conduct immersions in their respective facilities. The immersion programs
provided to our students are, Microbiology(Laboratory Staff), First Aid sessions(Nursing),
Housekeeping (HRM), and basic computer programing (ICT). We allot one whole day for the
students in these respective departments to allow our students full immersion. With this, the
department believes that earlier exposure of students to career options, will allow them to
decide and be ready for their own career, all in preparation to the citizen they will become
in the future.
To hone students to become global citizens, the University also offers International
exchange programs to benchmark teaching and learning practices, and immerse our
students to cultural differences to established cultural understanding and gain a global
perspective. The exchange program offers on campus experiences, traditional practices,
cultural landmarks and history tour. The university has established two international
partnership with Pyeongtaek, South Korea and one at Arizona, USA. The department offers
this exchange for both teachers and students for a span of two weeks.
The learning experiences offered by the department is organized to fit to the school’s
holistic growth objective. The department sets up an environment structured to create
student to become holistically developed, and globally competitive which highly reiterates
the importance of hands on practices. For this reason, the department tailor fits learning
activities that are provided with real life tasks that allows them to react in a way very
relatable to real life. The learning experiences of students are organized in a way it allows
breather for students to appreciate tasks at hand. Activities are interdisciplinary to
acknowledge competencies that aims for the holistic growth of students. From classroom to
campus wide activities, transitioning of tasks are very important. Aside from the DepEd
mandated celebrations, classroom activities and campus wide activities are monitored and
plan to exhaust the means of students to fully experience the offerings. Most importantly,
learning Experience of Students are tailor Fitted to the Demands of the society they belong
with.
Lastly, to ensure the effectiveness of learning experiences of students in the school,
recalibration of school programs according to performance indicators evaluation. The
institution I belong with conducts strategic planning process every five years, utilizing the
top-down management approach and results-oriented decision making. However, since the
department I belong with has a smaller scale and more immediate needs must be addressed,
strategic planning process are done annually. The data the department considers in this
planning process are; Guidance counselor chat Program with Students (one-on-one
interview with counselling), Students’ Evaluation of Faculty, Students’ Evaluation of Co-
Curricular Activities, Students’ Evaluation of Community and Extension Programs, Parents
Consultation through the PTC, and Faculty Consultations, to ensure that the perspective of
the stakeholders are taken accounted for. Since the Basic Education Department in the
University is a small community, it is vital to have immediate feedbacking and immediate
response to the stakeholders.
As I have discussed in this paper, it is evident how the institution I belong with has a
good grasp on the understanding of how curriculum planning and instruction goes hand in
hand to ensure the success of its clients, the learners. Looking back to these principles, the
implementation that occurs in the everyday scenario in school may not always reach the
standards set by Gardner. However, it does ensure me as a part of the department’s
administration, that the direction we have set forward with does not stand too far from what
is the ideal. As part of the curriculum developer in the institution, and with the help of my
deeper understanding in the curriculum work, I am confident that I can be a further asset to
improve the learning experience of the department’s stakeholders.
