gupta PG - No:176) Exercise 9

This document contains 12 problems related to mechanical design topics like belts, screws, springs, and other mechanical components. The problems involve calculating things like stresses, sizes, powers, and other metrics given specific component dimensions, loads, speeds, and other parameters. Solutions require the use of engineering formulas and calculations.

1. A punch press, used for stamping sheet metal, has a punching capacity of 50 KN.

The section of the

frame is as shown. Find the resultant stress at the inner fibre of the section shown in Fig.1 (khurmi
&gupta pg.no:176) exercise 9.

Fig.1 Fig. 2
2. The nominal diameter of a triple threaded square screw is 50 mm, while the pitch is 8 mm. It is used
with a collar having an outer diameter of 100 mm and inner diameter as 65 mm. The coefficient of
friction at the thread surface as well as at the collar surface can be taken as 0.15. The screw is used
to raise a load of 15 kN. Using the uniform wear theory for collar friction, calculate: torque required
to raise the load. (VB Bhandari) & class notes

3. A C-clamp is subjected to a maximum load of W, as shown in Fig.2 If the maximum tensile stress in
the clamp is limited to 140 MPa, find the value of load W. Given the neutral axis and centroidal axis
lies at a distance of 31.64mm, 33.2mm from the centre of curvature ‘O’ respectively. (khurmi
&gupta pg.no:143) 5.12.

4. The lead screw of lathe has ACME threads of 50mm outside diameter and 8 mm pitch. The
screw must exert an axial pressure of 2500N in order to drive the tool carriage. The thrust is
carried on a collar 110mm outside diameter and 55mm inside diameter and lead screw rotates
at 30r.p.m. Derive the power required to drive the screw. Assume coefficient of friction of 0.15
for screw and0.12 for collar. (khurmi &gupta pg.no:643) 17.6.

5. Design a belt drive to transmit 110 KW for a system consisting of two pulleys of diameter 0.9 m and
1.2 m, center distance of 3.6 m, a belt speed 20 m/s , coefficient of friction 0.3, a slip of 1.2% at each
pulley and 5% friction loss at each shaft, 20% over load. (khurmi &gupta pg.no:702) 18.7.

6. A truck spring has 12 number of leaves, two of which are full length leaves. The spring supports are
1.05 m apart and the central band is 85 mm wide. The central load is to be 5.4 KN with a permissible
stress of 280 MPa. Determine the thickness and width of the steel spring leaves. The ratio of the total
depth to the width of the spring is 3. (khurmi &gupta pg.no:875) 23.24.

7. Flat belt is required to transmit 30 kW from a pulley of 1.5m effective diameter running at 300
rpm. The angle of contact is 165 Deg. The coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley
surface is 0.3. Determine, neglecting centrifugal tension in to account, width of the belt required.
It is given that the belt thickness is 9.5 mm. The permissible working stress is 2.5 MPa. (khurmi
&gupta pg.no:699) 18.4

8. Design a helical spring for a spring loaded safety valve for the following conditions: Diameter of
valve seat = 65 mm, operating pressure = 0.7 N/mm2 , Maximum pressure when the valve blows off
freely = 0.75 N/mm 2 , Maximum lift of the valve when the pressure rises from 0.7 to 0.75 N/mm2 =
3.5 mm, Maximum allowable stress = 550 MPa, Modulus of rigidity = 84 KN/mm2 , Spring index = 6.
(khurmi &gupta pg.no:840) 23.8.

9. A rope drive is required to transmit 750 kW from a pulley of 1 m diameter running at 450 r.p.m. The
safe pull in each rope is 2250 N and the mass of the rope is 1 kg / m length. The angle of lap and the
groove angle are 150° and 45° respectively. Find the number of ropes required for the drive if the
coefficient of friction between the rope and the pulley is 0.3(khurmi &gupta pg.no:757)exercise7.

10. A helical compression spring made of oil tempered carbon steel is subjected to a load which varies
from 400N to 1000N. The spring index is 6 and the design factor of safety is 1.25. If the yield stress in
shear is 770MPa and endurance stress in shear is 350MPa. Find the size of spring wire. The
compression of the spring at the maximum load is 30mm. (khurmi &gupta pg.no:855) 23.17.

11. A V-belt is driven on a flat pulley and a V-pulley. The drive transmits 20 kWfrom a 250 mm diameter
V-pulley operating at 1800 r.p.m. to a 900 mm diameter flat pulley. The centre distance is 1 m, the
angle of groove 40° and μ = 0.2. If density of belting is 1110 kg / m3 and allowable stress is 2.1 MPa
for belt material, what will be the number of belts required if C-size V-belts having 230 mm2 cross-
sectional area are used. (khurmi &gupta pg.no:738) 20.5

12. A vertical screw with single start square threads of 50 mm mean diameter and 2.5 mm pitch is raised
against a load of 10 kN by means of a hand wheel, the boss of which is threaded to act as a nut. The
axial load is taken up by a thrust collar which supports the wheel boss and has a mean diameter of
60 mm. The coefficient of friction is 0.15 for the screw and 0.18 for the collar. If the tangential force
applied by each hand to the wheel is 100 N, find suitable diameter of the hand wheel. (khurmi
&gupta pg.no:636) 17.1.
