Math 21 WH 10.3&10.4 Solutions

This math homework assignment involves calculating properties of polar curves, including: 1) Finding the slope of a tangent line to r = 2 + 4 cosθ at a given point and intersections between curves. 2) Computing areas inside and between curves r = 2 + 4 cosθ and r = 4. 3) Setting up an integral to find the arc length of r = 2 + 4 cosθ from 0 to 2π. 4) Using an online solver to find areas bounded by curves r = 2sin(nθ) from 0 to π and generalizing the result.

1. The curves r = 2 + 4 cosθ and r = 4 are shown in the

graph at right.
(a) Use the derivative to find the slope of the tangent line

to the curve r = 2 + 4 cosθ at the point  = . Show all
2
work.

(b) What are the coordinates of the two points of intersection of the two curves, r = 2 + 4 cosθ and r = 4?
Give answers in both polar and cartesian form.

(c) Find the area inside the small loop of the curve r = 2 + 4 cosθ (hint- you need to find the relevant angles
first).
1. (d) Find the area of the crescent shaped region inisde the curve r = 2 + 4 cosθ but outside the curve r = 4.

(e) Set up and simplify, but do not evaluate the integral for the arc length of the curve r = 2 + 4 cosθ on the
interval 0 ≤ θ ≤ 2π.

2. Use an online solver (do not show work) to calculate the area bounded by each of the following curves on
the interval 0 ≤ θ ≤ π.

r = 2sin(2θ) r = 2sin(3θ) r = 2sin(4θ) r = 2sin(5θ) r = 2sin(6θ)

Areas:

Generalize this by using an integral to find the area of the curve r = 2sin(nθ) on 0 ≤ θ ≤ π.
