Hi Everyone! My Name is Dale from Pambayang Kolehiyo Ng Mauban, a 3 rd year student, taking up
Bachelor in Secondary Education Major in English. And for this webinar, we are going to discuss about
Media and Cyber or Digital Literacies. So what we are waiting for? Let’s start!

What is Media Literacy? Reading Literacy and Media Literacy have a lot of common. The word “Literacy”
usually described as the ability to read and to write. However, Media Literacy is the ability to identify
different types of media and to understand the messages of their sender. When we say “Media”, it
encompasses print media such as magazine, newspaper and poster. Theatrically presentation- tweets,
radios, broadcast etc. Being able to understand these various forms of information with an ability to
make sense of what is presented is he.

Part 2

Crystel:

Discuss What Media Literacy is NOT.

The following is a list of ideas to help to explore and understand how media literacy is different from
other literacies.

1. Media bashing is NOT Media Literacy. However, Media Literacy sometimes involves criticizing
the media.
2. Merely Producing Media is NOT Media Literacy. Although, media literacy should include media
production.
3. Just teaching with videos or CD-ROMs and other mediated content is Not Media Literacy. One
must also teach what media is.
4. Simply Looking for political agendas, stereotypes or misinterpretations is NOT Media Literacy.
Media Literacy does not mean “Don’t Watch”. It means “watch carefully” and “think critically”.

Let’s now discuss about the Challenges Media Literacy Education.

A lack of systematic implementation of media literacy assessment is one of the most challenges that the
field faces. Although, many countries in the world require media literacy to be taught in their curricula.
Most places, there is a lack of clearly assess of activities measuring students learning in terms of SKILLS
and COMPETENCIES. This is according to Buckingham and Domaille (2009), A challenge that may relate
of this is a lack of systematic implementation of media literacy assessment. Contrastingly, different
educational system which media literacy criteria and outcomes that are sad to say, are not clearly
defined.

Let’s now move on to What is Digital Literacy?


Digital Literacy is associated with the ability to use COMPUTERS, SOCIAL MEDIA, and the INTERNET. Here
are some of examples of Digital Literacy.

1. Understanding How to use :


 Web browsers
 Search engines
 Text
 Wiki
 Blogs
 Photoshop
 Powerpoint
 Video creation
2. Evaluating online resources for accuracy or “TRUSTWORTHINESS” of the information.
3. Using Online Classes to enhance Learning in the Classroom
4. Choosing appropriate Media
5. Encouraging students to use technology to showcase their learning.
6. Using the web to enhance the learning of your students.
Lastly,” Students and Teachers creating online content to be utilized both INSIDE and OUTSIDE
of the classroom. Digital Literacy also means “Knowing the limitations of technology”, as well as
“understanding the dangers and precautions” that the technology requires.

Let’s now proceed to Socio-Emotional Literacy within Digital Literacy


Socio-Emotional Literacy means being able to avoid TRAPS, as well as the derived benefits from the
advantage of digital communications. It involves mainly SOCIOLOGICAL and EMOTIONAL aspect of
work in Cyber Space including the ability to share formal knowledge but also to share your emotions
through digital communication to Identify pretentious people in the chat room, and to avoid
internet traps and malicious internet viruses.
Now, Let’s move on to Digital NATIVES. Digital Native is a term coined by Mark Prensky (2001) which
used to describe the generation of the people who grew up in the era of technology including
computers and internet. Digital natives are generally born after the 1980s and they are comfortable
in digital age because they grew up with modern and advanced technology. However, DIGITAL
IMMIGRANTS are those who are born before the 1980s and we can say that they are fearful of using
technology.

Moving on to the next topic, we have the Challenges of Digital Literacy Education.
They use of technology in education sector and there is a MAJOR CHANGE in TEACHING and
LEARNING METHODS, STYLES and CONTENT which occurs in many schools. Here are examples of the
Challenges in Digital Literacy Education:
1. Overcoming of Lack of Devices for student.
2. Letting the Students Learn at Their own Pace
3. Moving the Educators to From DIGITAL ILLITERATE to DIGITAL PROFICIENT.
