What is Media Literacy? Reading Literacy and Media Literacy have a lot of common. The word “Literacy”
usually described as the ability to read and to write. However, Media Literacy is the ability to identify
different types of media and to understand the messages of their sender. When we say “Media”, it
encompasses print media such as magazine, newspaper and poster. Theatrically presentation- tweets,
radios, broadcast etc. Being able to understand these various forms of information with an ability to
make sense of what is presented is he.

The following is a list of ideas to help to explore and understand how media literacy is different from
other literacies.
1. Media bashing is NOT Media Literacy. However, Media Literacy sometimes involves criticizing
the media.
2. Merely Producing Media is NOT Media Literacy. Although, media literacy should include media
production.
3. Just teaching with videos or CD-ROMs and other mediated content is Not Media Literacy. One
must also teach what media is.
4. Simply Looking for political agendas, stereotypes or misinterpretations is NOT Media Literacy.
Media Literacy does not mean “Don’t Watch”. It means “watch carefully” and “think critically”.
A lack of systematic implementation of media literacy assessment is one of the most challenges that the
field faces. Although, many countries in the world require media literacy to be taught in their curricula.
Most places, there is a lack of clearly assess of activities measuring students learning in terms of SKILLS
and COMPETENCIES. This is according to Buckingham and Domaille (2009), A challenge that may relate
of this is a lack of systematic implementation of media literacy assessment. Contrastingly, different
educational system which media literacy criteria and outcomes that are sad to say, are not clearly
defined.
