New QSK38, 50, and 60 Marine Sea Water Pump Option

Cummins Inc. has validated a new sea water pump, part number 3393018, as an option for QSK38, 50, and 60 marine engines. The new pump is recommended over the original, part number 2862844, which has been failing below customer life expectations. Installations using the new pump may require modifications to the priming circuit plumbing depending on how it is currently routed. The new pump has different priming port sizes and positions compared to the original.

Issue
Some Marine applications have been subject to frequent replacement of the sea water
pump, Part Number 2862844, sold under Service Kit, Part Number 4955947. These
replacements have occurred below the customers' life expectations for a sea water pump.
Presently, this is the only sea water pump option offered by Cummins Inc. for the MCRS
marine engines.
Resolution
Cummins Inc. has validated and approves the use of sea water pump, Part Number
3393018, on QSK MCRS marine engines. To prevent further issues with sea water pump,
Part Number 2862844, it is recommended to consider sea water pump, Part Number
3393018, as a replacement.
Installations that have retained the factory supplied piping that routes the priming circuit
discharge directly to the heat exchanger inlet tube, (Refer to Figure 1.) can install sea water
pump, Part Number 3393018. However, a replacement priming discharge pipe is not available
from Cummins Inc., and therefore must be sourced locally. Due to the different performance
characteristics of the rubber priming impeller on sea water pump, Part Number 3393018, as
compared to the metal alloy impeller on pump, Part Number 2862844, the priming discharge
circuit must be relocated to a location in the sea water circuit that is downstream of the heat
exchanger.
Installations that route the sea water pump priming circuit discharge to an accessory cooler,
may require vessel side plumbing modifications in order to fit the replacement pump.
The sea water pump priming circuit discharge ports differ in position and size between the
two pumps. Refer to Figures 2 and 3 below for positional differences of the priming port
between the two pumps.
Sea water pump, Part Number 2862844, has a ¾" - 14 NPSF female connection to the
priming port. Sea water pump, Part Number 3393018, has a 1" NPT female connection to

the priming port.

Differential pressure between the main pump inlet and the priming pump outlet must not
exceed 21.8 PSI [150.3 kpa] on pump, Part Number 3393018.

Reference Procedure Number 008-057 in Section 8 of the appropriate manual for removal and
installation instructions for the sea water pump.
