Lect 8 Natural Gas Pet Eng

This document discusses steady-state flow regimes in petroleum engineering. It defines steady-state flow as occurring when the flow across the external drainage radius equals the flow across the well radius. It then provides the steady-state flow equation and explains how steady-state equations can be useful for analyzing conditions near the wellbore. It also presents the equations for Darcy's law, the continuity equation, and the equation of state as they relate to steady-state gas flow calculations.

Flow Regime Characteristics

Steady-State Flow:
This type of the flow regime occurs when the flow across the external
drainage radius re, be equal to the flow across the well radius at rw .This is
can met in a strong water drive type reservoir, whereby the water influx
rate equals the producing rate.

Steady-State Flow Equation:

Steady-state equations can be useful in analyzing the conditions near the

wellbore because even in an unsteady- state system the flow rate near the
wellbore is almost constant so that the conditions around the wellbore are
almost constant. Thus, steady-state flow equations can be applied to this
portion of the reservoir without any significant error.

Steady-State Flow:

Note: Darcy's Law describes the pressure loss due to viscous shear
occurring in the flowing fluid. If the formation is not horizontal, the
hydrostatic or potential energy term must be included. This is usually
negligible for gas flow in reservoirs.

The continuity equation is:

Steady-State Flow:
The flow rate for a gas is usually desired at some standard conditions of
pressure and temperature, Psc and Tsc.
