Employment History
Freelance Musician
West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra, Leeds Symphony Orchestra, Leodian Concert Orchestra,
Carlinghow Theatre Company, Leeds Choral Society, Paddock Orchestra, Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan
Society, various Leeds Conservatoire Core and Student Union ensembles (2018 – Present)
Working with musicians and of widely varying skillsets and personalities in both theatrical
and concert settings
Constant self-improvement of my own skills as a trumpet player through diligent practice
and developing a keen eye for small details visually and audibly
Seeking and accepting work on my own initiative
Managing travel arrangements and preparing material for several ensembles at once whilst
involved with university work
During my time in school I was elected Deputy Head Boy, which in addition to normal prefect duties
– supervising break periods and safely stewarding pupils whilst travelling in public – involved
organising rotas for assembly duties and representing the student body on formal school occasions.
I was also heavily involved with extracurricular activities, including String Orchestra, Wind Band,
Brass Ensemble, Dramatic Society (with whom I featured in four consecutive productions), and
Senior and Chamber Choirs; my commitment to these resulted in being twice awarded Major
Honours in both Music and Drama, and later the Performing Arts Laureate in my final year.
This dedication continued into my university years; as a first year I was elected Assistant Manager of
LCoM Student Union Camerata (2017 – 2018), who is responsible for organising social events for
other members of the orchestra and taking care of logistical errands during our tour of Belgium that
summer. I served as Vice President and Citywide Representative for LCoM Christian Union (2018 –
2019) which involved attending weekly meetings to plan events with representatives from the other
three Leeds universities. This required me to both be assertive in discussing the individual needs for
my university whilst keeping an open mind and collaborating with the ideas presented by others, as
well using concise, clear language to convey these ideas under the short timeframe imposed.
Beyond education I have been active in volunteering in my own community; my work in completing
the Queen’s Badge (Boys’ Brigade) involved working weekly at Drop Inn Ministries, where I
rearranged display items, cleaned, sorted sellable stock from junk we regularly received, and
provided general assistance to customers, many of whom were elderly and required extra attention.
I also enjoy the satisfaction gained from working with young people; with BB I have volunteered with
Music Makers at Dungannon Music Centre, which involved taking a leadership role in a section of
much younger musicians, patiently answering questions they have about repertoire and technique,
and providing a good example for how to behave and interact with others in a professional
ensemble. For the past five years I have volunteered as a junior helper, and then a leader, at Child
Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) Mid Ulster summer camps, which in addition to providing Biblical
teaching involved looking after the children from day to day, cleaning toilets and washing up after
meals, accompanying them on the various outings they took part in and showing an interest in their
progress in craft and games, all the while providing a good example to follow and positive
reinforcement to promote good behaviour.
I am competent and largely self-taught in IT, with experience in word processing and presentation
software as well as digital audio workstations; I am quick to pick up new skills and consider it a
challenge to find more efficient and effective ways to complete tasks. I possess a full, clean UK
driver’s license as well as current licences for operating telehandlers and counterbalance forklifts.
