This learning module will give you the basic knowledge and skills about the principles of
design and color harmony that will help you in building the competencies you need to develop in
the K to 12 Technology and Livelihood Education Program. The lessons included in this module
are presented developmentally so that after finishing the first lesson, you are ready to apply your
learning to the succeeding lessons and accumulate more knowledge and skills until you complete
all the four most essential learning competencies
For this week, this module provides the learners with the basic concepts and skills in applying
principles of design and color harmony. These are used as bases for choosing and combining the
elements and expressing these in clothing selection. This will help you to select clothes for specific
functions that will greatly enhance your personality.

Before starting the module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will disturb you
while enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to successfully enjoy
the objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every page of this module.
2. Write on your notebook the concepts about the lessons. Writing enhances learning, which is
important to develop and keep in mind.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers using the answer key card.
5. Analyze conceptually the post-test and apply what you have learned.
6. Enjoy studying!
Let us check what you have learned using your stock knowledge by answering this test.

Principles of Design
The principles of designs are concepts used to organize or arrange the structural elements of
design.
1. Balance - From the centered of the dress, design should be identified on both sides. It may
be achieved in two ways.
a. Symmetrically or Formal balance– the amount of weight from the center has the same
design on both sides. This is an easy way of balancing but such balance lends monotony
to the design.
b. Asymmetrically or Informal balance– both sides of a dress have different designs from the
center. In this design, both sides is created by using different accessories
3. Emphasis – can be achieved when a particular part of a design attracts the eye. This is the
center of interest.
4. Rhythm –It is created by repeated use of the design. If there is rhythm in a design, the eye
would move easily from one part to the other. Rhythm can be created in three ways in a design:
a. Repetition of lines, colors, or accessories. Parallel lines are formed by the use of seams,
buttons, embroidery, lace, etc. which helps uninterrupted eye movement.
b. Radiation is created by radiated lines. These are techniques used to create lines or colors
coming from the center of from one part to another part. Such lines can be seen in gathers
on neckline, arm and skirt.
c. Gradation can be created by gradual change of lines, shape or shade of the color.

3 – ORANGE 9 – BLUE
11 5
4 – YELLOW ORANGE 10 – BLUE VIOLET
10 6 5 – YELLOW 11 - VIOLET
❖ Primary Colors – the sources of all colors –red, blue and yellow.
❖ Secondary Colors – are produced when mixing two equal amounts of primary
colors. – orange, green and violet
❖ Intermediate Colors – are produced by mixing two equal amounts of primary and
secondary colors.
The intermediate colors are;
Yellow + green = yellow-green Red + violet = red-violet
Blue + green = blue-green Red + orange = red-orange
Blue + violet = blue-violet Blue + orange = blue-orange
Color Harmony
The beauty of any color scheme depends upon how well the colors harmonize. To harmonize,
colors must appear to belong together.
