LESSON 2.3
Principles of Design and Color Harmony
Author: CATHY P. BIORE

This learning module will give you the basic knowledge and skills about the principles of
design and color harmony that will help you in building the competencies you need to develop in
the K to 12 Technology and Livelihood Education Program. The lessons included in this module
are presented developmentally so that after finishing the first lesson, you are ready to apply your
learning to the succeeding lessons and accumulate more knowledge and skills until you complete
all the four most essential learning competencies

For this week, this module provides the learners with the basic concepts and skills in applying
principles of design and color harmony. These are used as bases for choosing and combining the
elements and expressing these in clothing selection. This will help you to select clothes for specific
functions that will greatly enhance your personality.

Principles of Design
The principles of designs are concepts used to organize or arrange the structural elements of
design.

1. Balance - From the centered of the dress, design should be identified on both sides. It may
be achieved in two ways.
a. Symmetrically or Formal balance– the amount of weight from the center has the same
design on both sides. This is an easy way of balancing but such balance lends monotony
to the design.
b. Asymmetrically or Informal balance– both sides of a dress have different designs from the
center. In this design, both sides is created by using different accessories

TLE 7/8-DRESSMAKING EXPLORATORY

Quarter 4-Week 5
2. Proportion - is the pleasing relationship of all parts of the garment with one another.
Proportion refers to the relative size and scale of the various elements in a design.

3. Emphasis – can be achieved when a particular part of a design attracts the eye. This is the
center of interest.

4. Rhythm –It is created by repeated use of the design. If there is rhythm in a design, the eye
would move easily from one part to the other. Rhythm can be created in three ways in a design:

a. Repetition of lines, colors, or accessories. Parallel lines are formed by the use of seams,
buttons, embroidery, lace, etc. which helps uninterrupted eye movement.
b. Radiation is created by radiated lines. These are techniques used to create lines or colors
coming from the center of from one part to another part. Such lines can be seen in gathers
on neckline, arm and skirt.
c. Gradation can be created by gradual change of lines, shape or shade of the color.

5. Harmony - means a relationship of different portion of a design. Harmony should be

achieved through judicious use of color, shape, and texture to give a feeling of oneness.

THE COLOR WHEEL

1 2 3 1 – RED 7 – GREEN

12 4 2 – RED ORANGE 8 – BLUE GREEN

3 – ORANGE 9 – BLUE
11 5
4 – YELLOW ORANGE 10 – BLUE VIOLET

10 6 5 – YELLOW 11 - VIOLET

9 8 7 6 – YELLOW GREEN 12 – RED VIOLET

❖ Primary Colors – the sources of all colors –red, blue and yellow.
❖ Secondary Colors – are produced when mixing two equal amounts of primary
colors. – orange, green and violet
❖ Intermediate Colors – are produced by mixing two equal amounts of primary and
secondary colors.
The intermediate colors are;
Yellow + green = yellow-green Red + violet = red-violet
Blue + green = blue-green Red + orange = red-orange
Blue + violet = blue-violet Blue + orange = blue-orange

Color Harmony
The beauty of any color scheme depends upon how well the colors harmonize. To harmonize,
colors must appear to belong together.

TLE 7/8-DRESSMAKING EXPLORATORY

Quarter 4-Week 5
1. Related Color Harmony - These are those in which the colors are similar.
a. One-color harmony (Monochromatic color) – the RO
R O
easiest color scheme to follow is one that uses the RV YO
same color in different values and intensity. Example: V Y
dark blue suit with very dark blue accessories and BV YG
B
BG G
a light blue blouse.

RO
b. Adjacent color harmony (Analogous color R O
RV YO
harmony) – Three neighboring colors, one of which
V Y
is dominant. Example: yellow orange, yellow and
BV YG
yellow green are next to each other on the color
B
wheel BG G

RO 2. Contrasting Color Harmony – these are colors that are

R O
RV YO opposite in the color wheel.

V Y a. Complementary colors – directly opposite in the color wheel.

BV YG
Example, red and green, blue and orange, yellow and violet.
B BG G
RO
R O
b. Split complementary colors – a variation of the RV YO

complementary color scheme. In addition to the base V Y

color, it uses the two colors adjacent to its complement. BV YG

B
Example, red, orange and blue green BG G

RO c. Triad- A triadic color scheme uses colors that are

R O
RV YO
evenly spaced around the color wheel. Triadic color

Y
harmonies tend to be quite vibrant, even if you use pale or
V
unsaturated versions of your hue. Example, red, yellow
BV YG
B and blue.
