Course Description
The course is a continuation of Machine Design 1. This deals with the theories, principles, and design
calculation on power transmission elements such as belts, wire ropes, chain drives and gears. It covers
empirical design of machine elements, basic design procedure on machine elements that is essential
in preparation for detailed and assembly drawings.
Course Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, the student must be able to:
CLO1: Ability to apply the fundamentals of stress analysis, theories of failure and material science in
the design of flexible power transmission elements such as belt drives, wire ropes and chain drives.
CLO2: Ability to apply standard calculations and other empirical formulas to be used in the design
calculation of transmission elements. This also pertains to the proper selection of materials to be used
in every machine element.
CLO3: Ability to apply the fundamentals of stress analysis, theories of failure and material science in
the design of flywheel
CLO4: Ability to apply the fundamentals of stress analysis, theories of failure and material science in
the design of clutches and brakes and bearings.
Topics / Modules and Intended Learning Outcomes
Module 1: Flat Belt
ILO1. Able to understand and calculate the various important factors upon which the selection of a
belt drive depends;
ILO2: Able to derive the formulas in calculating the length and angle of wrap of both open and cross
flat belt;
ILO3: Able to understand the relation of the tensions of belt, power transmitted, and working stresses
and use the calculations in the selection of flat belt;
