Interview Experiences of Students from the batch of 2020-22

Candidate #1
Name: Aswin Menon

Education Background: CA

Work Experience: 7 Months

Venue of Interview: Online

Extempore Topic:

The pandemic would forever change the way people interact with each other

Interview Experience:

Being an online interview, I had 2 minutes to prepare before which I had to speak on the topic
allotted to me. I had prepared for COVID related questions and hence was able to speak
reasonably well without too many hiccups. Post that, there was the standard 'Tell me about
yourself' question. This was a question I had prepared for, and something every MBA
aspirant must prepare for during an interview. I spoke about my background, my academic
and co-curricular achievements and my hobbies. The rest of the interview was focused on my
hobbies which included quizzing and football. The interviewer asked me what articles and
blogs I follow for quizzing as well as to read upon football. Then the interviewers asked me
how a football club accounts its players in their financial statements. My interview was
during the time UEFA had given out a ban to Manchester City and hence he wanted to know
my opinion on the same. He then asked me whether foreign ownership of football clubs was
a good thing and whether it was sustainable in the long run. Finally, along those lines, he also
asked me the benefits of foreign direct investment to a country and whether it has cons.

Overall, the interview went very well, and I was thankful that my interviewer was a football
fan as well. It was not a stress interview by any means with both interviewers being friendly
and reasonable given the online circumstances.

Name: Ratula Bandyopadhyay

Education Background: B.A (English Literature)

Work Experience: 22 Months

Venue of Interview: Kolkata

WAT Topic:

Should religious education be made compulsory in schools?

Interview Experience:

I was questioned on some nuances from my educational background of English Literature,

mainly on some poets and the eras they belonged to, like Romantic or Victorian. I had
mentioned feminist activism in my CV, and was questioned on some feminist movements
and schools of thought I supported. I was asked how I managed to hold down a full-time job
with my CAT preparation, and what I would contribute to an MBA classroom keeping in
mind the unusual UG degree I had. I was asked about what other IIM calls I had, and how
willing I was to relocate from my hometown. The interview was very stress-free, and a
pleasant experience with free-flow of opinions and communication.

Interview Experience:

I was the first candidate to be interviewed that day. As I walked into the room, the two
panelists were settling in too. They asked me to take a seat and enquired about where I came
from and how did I travel to Mumbai. Based on that they asked me to name a few trains that
connected my city to Mumbai. One of the panelists randomly threw the word 'Geetanjali' at
me. I defined what it meant, also one of the trains connecting my native to Mumbai. They
asked me who wrote Geetanjali. Then the discussion led to Rabindranath Tagore and his
other works and the Nobel prize.
Here, the other panelist asked me to define isotopes. The logarithm of zero and about terms
like topography, bioremediation. Further, they asked me why I wanted to leave my job and
join an MBA program, which other offers I had and where did I see myself after the program.
Finally, they gave me some time to ask any questions I had for them and then wished me
luck.

WAT Topic:

Protection of intellectual property is necessary for innovation

Interview Experience:

My IIM K interview started with the interviewers asking me the meaning of my name. This
was one of the recurring conversation starters in IIM interviews. I explained that it was
named after a constellation. This made them ask me the next question, 'Are you interested in
stars?'. I told them that I like star gazing, especially when I was out on vacations, as the city I
grew up in was too polluted for the stars to be as visible and prominent. They looked at each
other, smiled, and asked me to name a few constellations. I named 4 or 5 of them. After
skimming through my file for a moment, they asked me 2 to 3 questions from my graduation
subject. The interviewers then asked me about what my role at Tata Steel was and what kind
of work it entailed. This was followed by a few technical questions from my domain of work,
which was in the learning and development function. Few of the final questions revolved
around the new developments in Tata Group including the Cyrus Mistry Case and Tata's
probable acquisition of Air India. My final question was about the process by which the
President of India is elected. They tried to confuse me on this one and I gave in too by saying
that I was not sure about the answer, because I really wasn't sure of the exact process.
Overall, my interview went well and it felt more like an interaction with two professors rather
than an interview.

WAT Topic:

Prices should be gender discriminatory

Interview Experience:

It went on for a good 25 minutes or so. Most of the discussion centred around Literature
(specifically, did I think Namdeo Dhasal’s politics were problematic when juxtaposed with
his poetry? Was the reverence towards Tolkien in English classrooms justified, especially in
light of the racism and anthropocentric discrimination in his Lord of the Rings? What was
my view of Sylvia Plath’s sexism in her personal decisions and correspondences? Why do I
prefer Stephen King’s The Shining to Kubrick’s film adaptation?).The question of why I
wanted to do an MBA instead of pursuing academia was discussed. I was asked to speak
about my favourite television advertisement. I was also asked the capital of Kerala.
It wasn’t a stress interview, but there was rigorous questioning on my academics.

Interview Experience:

My interview began with a brief introduction of myself. I was surprised by the questions
asked by one of the panel members about my zodiac sign and the difference between sun
sign and moon sign. I was not aware of it. Post this; they asked me questions on marketing -
any advertisement which makes me feel nostalgic. I mentioned the Parle-G ad. Apart from
that, there were questions on different Ps of marketing and how China government controls
the media and its impact on various business entities operating in China. At last, I was asked
one question on the spreading of coronavirus in different countries.

reading and the kind of movies I watch. These conversations were a real ice breaker. Then

WAT Topic:

Student unions in campuses should not have political party affiliation

Interview Experience:

My interview started with an introduction, I mentioned my academics and extracurriculars

in reverse chronology and ended my introduction by telling the panel about my hobbies.
They asked me a few follow-up questions on my hobby of creating my own comics, like
naming a few other artists and describing various comic styles and forms. The panel next
asked me why I wanted to do an MBA. I answered by telling them my interest in
entrepreneurship and how I'd like to be prepared in the best way possible before going out
in the corporate world. Next, they looked at my file and asked me my favourite subject to
which I replied the subject and two lines to describe it. The interviewer then mentioned raised
doubts as to if I might not be able to take the heat of the MBA program, in response to this I
explained that I have taken various challenging tasks and overcome them and that I realise I
will have to work harder for the ones I face during MBA. The panel asked me what other calls
I had and what would be my criteria to choose among my offers. In the end, they asked if I
had any questions for them.

Extempore Topic:

Should Corona virus be called "China virus"

Interview Experience:

The difficulties imposed by the pandemic forced the WAT process to be done differently.
They gave me enough time to prepare, and then I had to present a speech on the given topic.
Some questions on the pandemic followed it. They then questioned me on the effectiveness
of the new process and my opinions on it. I was also asked about my favourite subject during
my graduation (I replied with microcontrollers). I justified it by talking about how
microcontrollers impact everything around and the rise of smart devices. Finally, they asked
me to speak about any two recent news other than the pandemic.

WAT Topic:

We should stop romanticizing the good old village life

Interview Experience:

As soon as I entered the room, they had a disappointed look on their faces and asked, "another
engineer?". I took this opportunity to answer my scripted "tell me something about yourself"
answer, and that helped me drive the interview in the direction that I wanted. I spoke about
my qualifications and work experience at EY in FDD, my hobbies and my family background.
They chose to focus on my work-ex and my hobbies (swimming in particular). They asked
me questions around Due Diligence (what are the different types of diligences, why would a
company want to conduct due diligence, what was my role in the deals that I worked in, etc.)
No counter questions were made on this. They also asked me about swimming - where do I
swim, the length and breadth of an Olympic size pool, how many lanes do they have in the
Olympics (they tried to confuse me on this one, but I told them that I was confident with my
answer). One of the interviewers mentioned a random saying and asked me who said it and
what I could interpret from it. I hadn't heard it before, so I admitted that and gave my best
interpretation. He said I was completely off from the correct interpretation, but he liked how
I think. No questions on current affairs were asked. The interview lasted for 10-15 minutes,
and the interviewers were cordial.

question about my role as the CEO, on the decisions I would take due to the disruption caused
by AI.

Post that, I was asked to name five women CEOs, give one quality of each that differentiates
each of them. I brought in flavours of leadership qualities as a differentiating factor, which
cascaded into a discussion about the book 'Daring Greatly', which I was reading then. Finally,
I was asked to speak 'for' the topic - 'Women are a burden, they should not be uplifted'.
Overall, an engrossing interview, slightly grilling at moments but was easily manageable.

WAT Topic:

Interview Experience:

I was a little nervous before the interview began. The professors were amiable and made me
feel comfortable. The first question that came was why MBA. They really wanted to
understand what I wanted to do after completing my MBA. Which domain I want to enter.
How my experience will help me in that domain, etc. The questions they asked included
topics from every domain. The day was 24th Feb. They asked me what the big event
happening on that day is. Donald Trump was visiting India. Asked about US elections a little
bit. From there, they asked me for my opinion on the per capita GDP difference between India
and the USA. Asked about the state contributing the maximum to India's GDP. He asked
about Kerala and women's education here. They wanted to know about my interest in
mathematics. They asked one use of mode and median in a shoe shop. After that, the question
about Coal India Lmt. a little bit because my father is an employee there. The professors
ended the interview with '"Do you want to ask us something?"

Candidate #16
Name: Omkar Babar

Education Background: B.Sc (Chemistry)

Work Experience: 48 Months

Venue of Interview: Mumbai

WAT Topic:

Should profit making be the only goal of organizations?

Interview Experience:

Scenario: There were 2 panelists (Both Male). Both were very humble and sweet to talk to.
The interview lasted for about 15-20 mins. There were 10 guys in my slot. They called us in a
random manner. Quite a few guys who were called before me were asked questions around
quants. So, I was a bit nervous because math was never my forte!

Interview:

Me: May I come in, Sir?

P1: Yes Omkar, Come in. Please sit down

P2: How are you?

Me: I am good, Sir. Thank you!

P1: So, Omkar I see you have been working with a public sector bank, which is considered as
a very safe working place. Then why did you leave that job and joined a private coaching
institution?

Me: Sir, there we 3 reasons. 1. I was not happy with my work at the bank as the pay was not
linked with the performance. And, being a very hard worker, as I used to spend 12 hours a
day in the bank, I felt I deserved better challenges and better rewards. So, I decided to prepare
for CAT and complete an MBA to test myself in the field of the corporate world. 2. To prepare
for CAT, the environment at the bank wasn't very conducive as the job alone would consume

Atishay (+91-8860136221) | Arshia (+91-7003035002) | Dhivya (+91-8903428638) | Fiona (+91-8590106293)

more than half of my 24 hour day. 3. Working at coaching where I taught Math, Reasoning,
and VA was going to help me in my CAT prep as well.

P1: Also there must be far more money. Am I right? (Laughed)

Me: Yes sir, (Smiling) there was money as well.

P1: So, Omkar, why does India have a prevalent culture of coaching institutions? Is it good
or bad for education?

Me: Sir, I don't think we can look at this situation as good or bad. I think here the more
important question is, why in the beginning we need coaching classes? and why our schools
and colleges cannot take care of the needs of students? I think the problem is, our schools are
not efficient to provide vocational, extracurricular, skill-related coaching. So, there is no other
option than joining private classes to make up for these needs. For sure, coaching classes are
very costly, and the poor are out of reach and this is something the government needs to take
care of strategically.

P1: Do you have any plans of starting your own private coaching?

Me: Definitely Sir. Though I am a banker by profession, I am a teacher by heart. But I don't
think I have the skills to start my own venture at this stage. And that is one more reason for
me to join an MBA

P2: So, you taught math at your previous job. (And he asked straight 3 questions from
geometry, probability, and P&C)

Me: (After trying for 2-3 mins) Sorry sir, I am not sure about the answer. Advanced Math is
something I am very weak at. In CAT as well, I scored the least there. At the coaching
institute, I taught arithmetic and had nothing to do with advanced maths

P2: (again he asked some very difficult vocabulary and phonetics related question)

Me: (Very frightened now) I answered 2 out of 5 questions asked

(Then snacks entered the room. Some roasted Malai Kofta. We three ate some)

Atishay (+91-8860136221) | Arshia (+91-7003035002) | Dhivya (+91-8903428638) | Fiona (+91-8590106293)

`

P1: Omkar, your name is very interesting. Your name is Hindu, father’s name is Buddhist,
surname is Muslim. Very secular it is. What is the reason?

Me: Smiling... there is no reason as such sir... it is just a coincidence of choices of my parents

P1 and P2 both laughed

P1: Thank you Omkar for coming here. It was nice talking to you. All the best

Me: Thank you sir, Have a great day

There were two panelists. One was professor from Finance domain. He started interview with
asking 'Tell me about yourself’. As my entire background doesn't have a touch of finance,
second question was why MBA in finance? As that answer had mention of stock market
index, I was asked how NIFTY, SENSEX are calculated? When did those start? Why SENSEX
is always higher than NIFTY? After answering all those, he asked me how will you measure
risk? What is beta in the context of financial market? After answering to that question, he
touched upon little bit of Portfolio Optimization theory. After that the second panelist asked
questions like- time lag between Kolkata and London, longitude and latitude of Kolkata, then
a whether any two places are there on earth where this time lag is 12 hours? Whether Russia
and US are neighbours? Why not? They city in US closest to Russia? After that some casual
discussion on my past degree, what all I studied there? Overall a very amicable gesture from
panelists and not at all a stress interview.

3 things you learnt and how do you plan to implement them in a novel course such as PGP-
Finance?, Why PGP Finance and not a flagship PGP course of similar IIMs?, If you were told
to set the fees of PGP Finance, which would be the key factors you would take into
consideration?, What is a black swan event ? Who coined the term black swan? - the
discussion then went around COVID. Impact of COVID on how investment banking is done
in India. (Had answered that in India the most frequent IB mandates are either public or
private fundraise. With COVID and weakening balance sheets there would be a lot of
consolidation and hence M&A would see uptick) Hence, detailed discussion on how M&A is
different from fundraise. What was the Reliance-Facebook deal - M&A or Fundraise? Finance
concepts - DCF, Beta calculation, Negative Beta industry, NPV Vs IRR, GK questions around
