F4 Reaction Rate Assignment

The document is a chemistry homework assignment that investigates the effect of catalyst mass on the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Experiments were conducted using different masses of manganese (IV) oxide catalyst added to 50 cm3 of 0.8 mol dm-3 hydrogen peroxide solution. The results show that increasing the catalyst mass increases the rate of reaction. Students are asked questions to analyze the results, draw energy profiles and apparatus diagrams, and perform calculations.

Homework Assignment

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decomposes to produce water and oxygen gas. The rate of
reaction can be increased using a catalyst such as manganese
(IV) oxide (MnO2). The effect of the mass of a catalyst on the rate of decomposition of
hydrogen peroxide was investigated.
For each experiment, a different mass of manganese (IV) oxide was added to 50 cm3 of 0.8
mol dm-3 hydrogen peroxide and the volume of oxygen was
measured.
The results are shown in the table below.

RATE OF REACTION USING DIFFERENT MASSES OF MANGANESE (IV) OXIDE

Experiment Mass of manganese (IV) Rate of reaction (mL s-1)
oxide (g)
1 0.0 0.0
2 0.5 0.6
3 1.5 1.8
4 2.2 2.7
5 3.6 4.5
6 4.0 5.0

(a) Define the term ‘rate of reaction’.

(1 mark)
(b) Write a balanced chemical equation to show the decomposition of hydrogen
peroxide. (2 marks)
(c) Plot a graph of rate of reaction (y-axis) against mass of manganese (IV) oxide (x-
axis) using the data in the table.
Ensure that you use suitable uniform scales. Label each axis giving the units. Draw a
line of best fit through the points.

(8 marks)
(d) From your graph:
(i) describe the relationship between the rate of reaction and the mass of the
catalyst. (2 marks)
(ii) determine the rate of reaction using 3.0 g of the catalyst.
(1 mark)
(iii) determine the volume of oxygen produced after 10 s using the value
obtained from (d) (ii). (1 mark)

(e) Draw and label the energy profile diagram with and without the catalyst. You can
use dotted lines for one of the profiles.
(4 marks)
(f) Draw a labelled diagram of the apparatus (including reagents) that was used to
conduct the experiment and collect the gas.

(4 marks)
(g) Calculate the number of moles of hydrogen peroxide that were used in each
experiment. (2 marks)
