The document discusses the plane frame stiffness method for structural analysis. It describes how to obtain the global stiffness matrix K by transforming the local member stiffness matrices k' using a transformation matrix T. The global stiffness matrix K is then used along with the applied load matrix Q and known displacement matrix D to solve for unknown displacements via the stiffness equation. Member forces and reactions can then be determined, along with shear and moment diagrams.

Plane frame analysis-Stiffness Method
• Plane frame stiffness matrix can be obtained
by the addition of truss and beam stiffness matrix which have been already developed for local coordinate system. • Since frame members may be vertical, horizontal or inclined therefore transformation matrix will be needed for plane frame analysis. • The development of local stiffness matrix and Global stiffness matrix is given in subsequent slides. Structural Engineering by Dr. M. Burhan Sharif Plane frame analysis-Stiffness Method • Local stiffness matrix for Frame • In frames three displacements per node are present i.e. horizontal, vertical and rotation.

Plane frame analysis-Stiffness Method Procedure for analysis • Write down the applied Load matrix “Q”. • If there is UDL then first determine the equivalent loads and then form Load matrix “Q” • Specify displacement matrix “D” containing all known and unknown displacements. • Determine frame stiffness matrix for all members and then determine the total stiffness matrix Kt Structural Engineering by Dr. M. Burhan Sharif Plane frame analysis-Stiffness Method Procedure for analysis • Eliminate rows and columns corresponding to known displacements and form Kmt • Using Stiffness Equation (Q=KD) determine unknown displacements. • Now determine member internal forces and reactions and at this stage if equivalent loading is used then it must be adjusted. • Now draw the Shear force and Bending Moment Diagram.
